@pedant  I used your Mothers answer today when Mr Winston asked me how long his chicken should roast for… “until its done” I answered and got a nasty grin in return.

@thane16  @idiotsavon and @mudlark  Quite a few years back my oven quit on Christmas Eve ( as they do) and I had  about 20 family members coming for dinner so there was much frantic panic. My kind neighbor was going away so she offered her oven to us and so we got the turkey stuffed and ready and put the roasting pan turkey and all on the sled and dragged it down the road to her house. We had no car at the time so every now and then throughout the day me or my OH  would walk down the road to baste the bird and when it was done we piled it back on the sled and pulled it back home. It gave my family a lot of amusement and gave me somewhere to go and get a breather now and then. That broken oven gave me a funny Christmas tale and showed us how kind people can be sometimes.

Happy New Year to all of my fellow Whovians all over the world!  I have 2 hours to try to stay awake so I can say I saw the new year come in. ( too old and wise to party)  I truly hope you all have a good year ahead and warm hugs to those who suffered loss this year. Lets all grab a hold 0f 2019 and make it do what its told.

@kevinwho    Sometimes I  try really hard to watch an episode objectively so I can discuss it with all of you  more intelligently and less emotionally but it never happens. I hear the music, read the credits, see the Doctor and I am lost in the story.  I do dislike some of the adventures the Doctor has but I never dislike a new Doctor . I just think “oh, that’s the kind of Doctor this one is” and accept them and carry on watching. That makes me the opposite of the haters and I suspect just about as valuable when it comes to being objective but I keep on trying. I just like the show way too much.

@janetteb  Whenever there is a new Doctor I find it takes a second or third viewing of the whole first series before I get completely comfortable with them. That was the case with Tennant and Capaldi and I love them both now and watch them over and over. I am sure it will be the same with this new Doctor. and I will have plenty of time to get acquainted with her waiting for the next series.

I hope you are managing to beat the heat a bit. Wow that is proper warm over there.

@thane16    It is an ever changing and evolving show that grows up as it grows old and it always challenges me in some way. Some episodes age better than others but I still love most of them and I find something new to like every time I watch an episode. It just gets better and better.

Vampires in Venice, the Tardis and Amy Pond and her boys, what more do you need?

@thane16  It is still Christmas here for 27 minutes and the house is very quiet for now. Boxing Day brings another dinner and more family visits and then both granddaughters come and stay for a few days before New Years so we are still a little busy. I am kidding about the favourite son thing of course, or am I? I am.

When it is too cold we huddle round the fireplace in housecoats and slippers and hibernate.

I like Vampires in Venice , it is a funny episode and I enjoyed Rory in it. I think I will watch it as soon as I get a chance to sit down again as it has been awhile.

15 minutes now and its all over till next year.See what a slow typist I am.

@janetteb and @thane16   Hope you both had a good day. I wish I could send you some cold because you are way too hot there and we have plenty to spare. Your feasts sound yummy and I would love a juicey summer nectarine or peach.Mmmmmm.

@miapatrick  Your day sounds perfect and I love Christmas doggies.

@kevinwho  I just watched that one and it makes me happy/sad  then hopeful and excited.Lots of feels. I had a lovely day with my 2 sons and my granddaughter and all their furry friends. Now I am unwinding with a nice cuppa and my pals here in Who Town. Also my youngest son gave me a collection of all Matt Smiths episodes and specials on 10 dvds (he is my favourite son this year).

@fatmaninabox  Thanks for the song. Hope you had a great day too.

Merry Christmas to all my friends in Whoville!  I hope you all get the day you want, be it peaceful or  boisterous and that you have friends or family to spend it with. @kevinwho    I have been re-watching all of the Christmas episodes in order as I get ready for the big day and this is one of my favorites. It is so sweet and hopeful it can’t fail to give you the “feels”. Happy crying. For me the story was about how far a Mother will go to protect her children. Madge is my hero, she disarms her keepers and goes on to drive the big machine through the acid rain to get to her kids. I think because she is so willing to give of herself for others that the trees know she is strong enough, brave enough and kind enough to carry them get home. I love a happy ending at Christmas and this one is very happy. Good old perplexed Reg.

The Doctor is lovely and whimsical in this episode and his upgrades to the house are wonderful and magic, all the things you need at Christmas.

@janetteb   This time of year can be bittersweet, reminding us of those we have lost but little things like putting out their Christmas cards or their favourite ornaments can help us remember  days spent together. I have my Dads carolers and my Moms snowmen on display as well as hanging stockings that belonged to my wee dogs. Sad but happy.

@arbutus     Forget hockey, complaining about the weather is the Canadian national sport. Right now in Ontario it is freezing rain to be followed tomorrow by warmer temps and just plain rain. No snow for Christmas this year but come January………..Brrrrr.

Another thing we bond over is food and Ukrainian food is sooo good but a lot of work. I made butter tarts yesterday and gained a few pounds just looking at them.

@craig  The more I watch that fireplace the more I love it. Next year…. Doctor Who themed Christmas at my house. My search for Tardis blue ornaments and shiny things begins now. It is too late this year but next year it will be a blue Who Christmas. Thanks for the inspiration and for giving me a Who themed activity for those long Who-less months.

@thane16  I just watched the Snowmen and decided that next time I have good snow ( lots of snow and temps. about 2 or 3C ) I am going to make a few evil snowmen to scare my granddaughters. Don’t worry, at 14 and 10 years old they are not easily scared and the youngest is a fan so she will love it. Last year I had snowmen with protest signs calling for an end to global warning and the year before they were drinking Tim Hortons coffee like good Canadian snowmen should. The trick with the Who snowmen will be the creepy grin and the teeth. I hope I don’t scare myself.

@thane16   I don’t live in B.C. but I wish I did. I live in Ontario and we are usually blanketed in snow and freezing through the winter months. My daughter lives on Vancouver Island on the west coast and her weather is rainy but much warmer in the winter. It is a rain forest with giant ,huge trees that cars could drive through. Meanwhile it snows yet again where I am but I get to make snowmen.

@janetteb      I feel your political pain and share your fear for the future. Our lovely( I like him) PM Trudeau is fighting the surge but I fear it is a losing battle. My province of Ontario just elected a Conservative govt. that ran on a platform of anti-immigration and anti-environment and soon cut programs like the cap and trade carbon tax and social programs a plenty. It really makes me anxious to see my country try so hard to go backwards after all the fighting it took old activists like me to get these protections and rights.  Always shoot for the highest ideals  and as you say , vote.

That is what the Doctor more than anything represents for me , the idea of  fighting for fairness and equality and safety and a caring society, even if it seems impossible, because it might just happen and we may get there some day.

@thane16  I cannot over-winter lavender outside so I have to dig it up and bring it indoors  or just replant every spring. I replant so I would just get rid of the bad plants and start again. I hate to throw out any plants so I have a patch in the back where I put plants that don’t want to grow anywhere else . Sometimes they surprise me and thrive so that patch now is rather pretty but overgrown. I can only weed so much!

My toads are just plain brown guys and are very mellow. They definitely don’t spit although they will secret a poison liquid on your hands if you pick them up and if a dog tries to bite one the dog will foam at the mouth and drink a lot of water. It is just very bitter. We have about 10 varieties of frogs in this area but we have a creek and a wetland in our backyard so we are lucky to have a lot of animals but unlucky to have a lot of bitey insects too.

@thane16  The pumpkin headed Trump guy doesn’t seem to care for Canada and seems intent on hurting our economy anyway he can.He doesn’t hurt our feelings though, we just shudder and cringe and hope it is over soon. Nothing we can do to change how the States votes but we have to fight that nationalism and populism in our own country. We cannot let that happen here in Canada.

@thane16      Frogs are very cool! I live on a creek so I have a lot of frogs and toads in my garden and I love them. My favourite thing is to see them in funny spots like on the nose of a statue or under a ornamental mushroom or even when they are really well hidden in my flowers. I make my husband take photos for me as I am crap at it. I have dozens of stupid frog pics.

If I had no frogs and toads here I would have been carried away by mosquitoes long ago.

@thane16  I also see the 12th as a trickster or even “the great pretender”. He has a different face for every occasion, but inside he is sad and tired and a little bored. He has learned over a very long time that his control of the universe is limited and although that is scary it is also freeing. Letting other people look after themselves and make their own decisions even if you think they are wrong can be hard on someone who is used to being in control. I feel the 13th Doctor has learned that lesson finally and can let go and stop trying to stop everything bad and save everyone. She has learned that everyone has a right to be the author of their own story. The 12th Doctor and Clara and Bill taught her that sometimes terrible things happen to the ones we love and even if we can’t stop it doesn’t mean it is your fault.

As I get older and suffer the losses that come with life and the “grown up  problems” my grown up kids have and frankly the political climate we live in, I have had to learn these lessons also, sometimes the hard way and I have become better at letting go. You can’t fix it all so fix what you can and always try to be a better person. Fight the good fight but get used to losing cause it happens. The 13th Doctor is just finally learning the lessons the only age and experience and loss can give you. We Grandmas have some hard earned wisdom if only someone would listen.

@arch   You and I could watch Who together as I also “just sit back and enjoy the ride”. When the music starts I am sucked into whatever story they are telling me and like you I always find something I like. I am rarely bothered by inconsistencies because I never notice them until after the show is over or until I read it here. Sometimes I even re-watch just to check out things others have mentioned only to get sucked in again and totally miss them.

@thane16   When the Doctor and friends wear period clothes they blend in and become part of the crowd and that seems to work for some adventures and even be needed for some like when the Doctor and Martha hid away in the school. When they show up in their in regular clothes it immediately tells others that they are not local. It says we are alien.we are not from around here. It adds to the strangeness of the Doctor and inspires fear and awe in the locals. That helps the Doctor take control while they are still staring at the strange clothes on the strange aliens.

I also think that in AG at least that the Doctor never changes into period clothes even when the companions do, but I might be wrong.

@thane16    You are very wise.  We should never go backwards.

@turntheclock  Social messages in TV shows have been around since TV was invented. Even Gilligans Island had them. I for one can be entertained and learn something at the same time.In fact we all need the lessons on kindness and fairness . Hate and fear are out there and we can’t pretend it is not part of our lives. Doesn’t  it make you feel better to see that everyone can make a difference, no matter how small? Doctor Who gives me hope and that is not too bad for a TV show.

    #65882
    winston @replies

@pedant   Kerblam!   I think you just nailed the thing on the head, for me anyway. I absolutely agree that fear is the thread that ties these episodes together. Fear of the unknown, of change , of differences and fear of others. Being scared is horrible and it drives people , animals and aliens to do desperate things to avoid it. Sometimes that fear of others makes them want to destroy what they are scared of, it makes them hate what they fear. How many times have you heard someone say “I hate spiders!” when really they are scared of them?

So, yes I think that you have found an arc that I can explore. Thanks for that.

Happy Who Day to all my fellow Whovians!

@mudlark and @janetteb  Although Christmas pudding is not one our family food traditions I will be making enough shortbread and butter tarts to keep a dairy in business. I also make the shortbread ahead of time to “age” in the cold room so the simple flavours have time to mingle. Christmas time is very yummy and very hard on my diet.

We have a good layer of snow here and temps of -12 C so the snowmen are appearing as if by magic.

@craig  That looks like an amazing documentary. I don’t have iplayer but I will ask my library to order it if they can because everyone should have a chance to watch it. The work that Jackson has done on these WW1  films has brought these men back to life in a way that brought tears to my eyes. It looks like they were here just yesterday. I really want to watch it all.  My grandfather and 2 great grandfathers and at least 6 uncles left Canada to serve in Europe with 2 young men never coming back and this film offers a visual connection to all these young men. What amazing things computers can do.

Thank you for telling me about it or I may have missed something very important.

@cathannabel   I noticed that she says “sorry” quite a lot and she reminds me of the 10th Doctor who was also sorry a lot. In both cases I think it is because they feel helpless in the face of tragedy and the “laws” of time travel. They apologize because they feel they have a duty of care that is impossible to  live up to ,  as the 12th Doctor learned from Clara. They say “sorry” because that is all they can say sometimes. Or………

@jimthefish  @missrori  @bluesqeakpip    I am disappointed that there will be no Christmas Who this year. I look forward to it as one of the few things I do for myself on that busy day. Dinner is over ,dishes are done and the family has gone home and finally I get to sit down, make a cuppa and watch Doctor Who . The specials are sometimes too sentimental or goofy and there have been a few wonky Christmas trees but I don’t care. If you can’t be all sappy and silly on Christmas when can you be?

Oh well, I guess I can watch one or two of the old ones but it won’t be the same as a shiny new Who fresh out of its wrappings. It was a Who gift.

Wonder what Doctor Who will be like with a hangover?

I like her, she is “The Doctor”.  In fact for me she became the Doctor almost as fast as Matt Smith did. Her clothes are quirky and her boots are cool and she made her own sonic spoon. I felt the 10th and 11th Doctors in there as well as the 5th. The first episode is over and I am very happy with the new Doctor. Can’t wait to see what happens next.

@thane16  Thank you for the welcome. I am showing up very late for the party but I have my Tardis slippers on and I am ready to go. After reading hundreds of posts to catch up!

Due to a series of unfortunate events we were without internet for a couple of months. There was a storm, a few big,old trees and a lot of downed wires to deal with. Then waiting for the “internet guy” to show up and hook me up and here I am. The worse thing was watching the new Doctor and not being able to go straight to this great site, full of smart people to discuss the show. I have watched the first three episodes and hope to add my 2 cents worth after I read what everyone else has written.

We have red and grey squirrels and birds drink at ours and raccoons come to try and get my goldfish. Anyway the last 2 called Jim the Fish and The Incredible Mr Limpet (now safe under wire) seem to maybe be going to have little fish. It seems that Mr Limpet is actually Mrs Limpet and she is full of eggs. I am very excited and really hope it happens. We have a very swampy creek in our back yard and yet frogs seem to like the ornamental fishpond in the front garden. Another thing about my frogs: they disappear when it rains and I tell my OH that they don’t like getting wet.

@janetteb and @blenkinsopthebrave     I agree with you both about The Eleventh Hour being a terrific episode. It is an introduction to a new  Doctor that is hard to beat. I re-watched just the other day (when it was far too hot to go outside) and loved the 11th Doctor all over again. It was also a unique way to meet and quickly learn about the companion. In a few moments we see her grow up (with that crack in her wall) and we see how time travel can affect an ordinary girl. A few minutes for the Doctor are years for little Amelia. She grows up and he stays the same. Ah time travel and fish custard.
