Something to keep you occupied. A five part, comedic drama-documentary mini-series about the true story of the biggest fraud in publishing history – the Hitler diaries.
Made in 1991 it stars Jonathan Pryce as a reporter with the German magazine Stern who thinks he has the scoop of the century on his hands – the personal diaries of Adolf Hitler.
Winner of a Royal Television Society award, it covers the bidding war for serialisation rights, the acrimony among the eminent historians who were taken in and, finally, the diaries’ exposure as an elaborate hoax.
It’s got a fantastic cast including, among others, Alexei Sayle, Alan Bennett, Alison Steadman, Barry Humphries (as Rupert Murdoch – who better?), Julie T. Wallace, Richard Wilson and none other than Tom Baker! Capaldi is in all five episodes. He gets to act alongside Tom Baker. It must have been a dream come true.
