Hello everyone! Definitely new to the forums so I just would like to introduce myself. I got myself into Doctor Who exactly one year ago. The first time I was even aware that this show even existed was actually seeing advertisements for it on the SciFi Channel here in America. This was during the Tennant run. The ads never convinced me to watch the show, because I assumed everything shown on the SciFi channel at that time was complete garbage and it had terrible CG effects. Little did I know…
A few years later I’m doing rehearsals for a play with a bunch of my theater friends when they get into a really absorbing and excited conversation about DW. I kept thinking to myself “Wait, that really crappy looking show from a few years ago on the SciFi channel? Is that still popular? Is it still even on?” I inquire them about it and told them that I never heard of the the show nor do I even know what it was about. They ALL look at me like I just got out of the nuthouse with wide eyes and mouths agape.
They explain to me the entire premise of the series… and told me it was a 50 year old show that has new episodes being made to this very day! That took me by complete surprise! How did this show pass under my radar after ALL this time? They quickly tell me to watch the beginning of the Ninth Doctor run. I watched the first episode… and was unimpressed. I later told my friends that I couldn’t get into it due to it having such a weird and cheesy premise.
Then, a few months later I had an idea. I asked them if they have watched any of the classic episodes to which they replied “No.” I then tell them I’m going to give the show a second try…. but I’m going to start from the VERY beginning starting with Hartnell all the way up to Smith in chronological order. They thought I was crazy! But it has been a whole year now and I’m already at the end of the Third Doctor’s run!
This whole year has made me into a huge fan now. I love the characters, the monsters and these stories! So far, my favorite Doctor has been the First Doctor. My favorite story so far is “Tomb of the Cybermen”. My favorite companion so far is Jo Grant and my favorite monsters are the Cybermen. I am so happy to become a new fan of this incredible series and I wish I would have became a part of it earlier in life. I still have a LONG way to go though. Currently watching “Death to the Daleks”. Can’t wait to watch some Fourth Doctor stuff coming soon.
Thank you for reading my super long introduction and I hope to be an active meber of these forums. 🙂
