I may as well write about one of my presents now. I really hate anything that is termed “celebrity” but I was given a book at Christmas called “Behind the Sofa – Celebrity memories of Doctor Who”. It is, however, a lovely idea.

A sponsorship funded project to raise money for Alzheimer’s research. Hardbacked, with a few simple illustrations for each entry, the quality of the contributors* makes it what it is. A mixture of writers, ex-stars and guest stars of the show, and those talking heads we’ve come to fear.

It contains a cut above the usual talking heads though. The Guardians Charlie Brooker explains his youthful horror at the end of one of the episodes of “The Leisure Hive” where Tom Baker appears to be torn apart. Mitch Benn (of The Now Show, who has been allowed to sing about his love of the show**) explains how Adric was a wanker, and how devastated he was by his death.

Many of the contributions are about family memories and friendships built up around the show. It really is engaging, and a thing of love. This link will take you to the Amazon entry which will enable you to preview the pages with a list of contributors. Other retailers, with a more socially responsible attitude to paying Tax are available.

Above all – a book about memories to raise money for a charity who seek to help people losing theirs. Very Doctorish.

    * Warning – May contain Louise Mensch.
** Mitch Benn has sung often about Doctor Who on Radio 4’s Now Show. My favourite has to be “Save my Doctor Who”. People may remember that an episode may have been shown a week later if a football match had gone to extra time. The day before he recorded this for broadcast.

Merchandise – One of the best things about being an out, loud and proud Doctor Who fan is people buy you stuff you actually like. I’ve had loads of good stuff over the years from neices and nephews, my partner and other family members.

This year I had a few books, which I might write about later. I think the best thing I was ever given was a metal replica of the fob-watch used by The Master in Utopia with an autographed photo of Derek Jacobi. It was a lovely present for me, if you consider my choice of avatars over the years.

The 50th special is to be filmed starting in February(or April, depending upon sources). I posted this link to the docu-drama that Gatiss has scripted “An Adventure in Time and Space” which goes behind the scenes of the creation of the programme.

@bluesqueakpip mentioned the Quatermass Experiment and I too heard of a live experiment to tie into the docu-drama. I took it with a pinch of salt because they only rarely had to do live stuff, and the story choice that was named – Edge of Destruction, actually exists, and some of the plot points in it would be lost on people who hadn’t seen the earlier serials.

Well done @craig – this looks very homely!

    @whisht

And it was at that point, that I thought I might drop the anagrams!

It’s funny you should mention that. When I was going over the old “Cold Blood” blog I came upon an entry where I tried to unlock the anagram key of Amy/Amelia Pond. I’d completely forgotten that I’d written it. I was someone else at the time, but this comment permalink may take you to it or at least highlight it in blue if you scroll down.

I really ought to take my past incarnations advice and give it up myself!

I’m aware you won’t be watching the repeat on the BBC tomorrow, but if you’d like to share your thoughts. I thought it a worthy effort at the time, but came to see the flaws, and then later on absolutely loved it.

It has to be a year since I saw it last, so I’m interested in how I’ll see it tomorrow.

    Hope to see you there!

I think the mirroring and themes of intelligence may possibly be critical as time goes on. If you consider there are at least 3 versions of Clara/Oswin (Oswin “I Snow”) from the last two episodes, one more in present day, another in a manuscript (?) from the past in the trailer, what if every time she meets him she mirrors him, and takes on more of his attributes? I’m not sure why I’m thinking this, but it could be that fairly old idea that a mirror steals part of your soul (Remember “Kinda”). Hmmm. I will report back tomorrow. With more alcohol.

It’s a good idea, on the bookclub, and you’ve mentioned the series I most remember (and especially Talons), so if you want to pick a week, I’d volunteer to set of a blog about some of its history at least.

    @whisht

Thanks for that. Most of what the Guardian is doing at the moment (with threading, etc) is to try to tempt the lurkers to actually comment and get engaged, but I can’t see that it will work. I lurked for years on internet forums before I lept in, so I can understand some reluctance. Can I ask – you say you don’t know enough about the shows. Since when did that stop anyone else on the “G” commentating? You’ve made some good points. I’m a T. Baker boy myself. I think this could acually be a lot of fun.

I would like all my fellow posters to know this is a purely administrative function. Now kneel. No! Just watch Cold Blood, post on the thread, and let me know when you plan to watch Asylum. Cold Turkey from Who is a terrible thing, and I’m sure we’ve all had our fill of Cold Turkey!

Will we be tissue-compressed-eliminated if we don’t do our homework, though?

Haha, of course not! Just microwaved, er… we’ll just realise you’ve got better things to do!

After making a spectacular error when my page failed to reload I have actually made a new post on the repeat of Cold Blood! It’s here, with dates, stats, links and everything!

If anyone wants to comment if they watch, or want to re-watch the episode on DVD, please feel free. I have some thoughts on my mixed feelings on the episode to share after I re-watch it (a critical point, my point of view varies on my immediate mood).

Can I just say I was shocked when I re-read the thread by some of the names missing in later blogs, and the inactivity of others. I love the people who replaced and made those blogs what they were, but it’s a shame so many dropped of the radar.

Before I embark on answering posts does anyone else laugh when the click box “remember me” appears below their login details?

It just seems so massively appropriate.

Those lonely weekends without new who. As well as exercising our thoughts on the enigma of Clara, @craig had an idea on the suggestions post about viewing an episode a week as a kind of “Book club”. I think it’s and interesting idea. A couple of thoughts on this general blog, just to gauge peoples access to previous episode.

There are a number of empty threads on the recent 7a series, starting with Asylum of the Daleks. As we are discussing CLARA, is a group re-watch and comment worth doing? or is it too recent?

The alternative may be that BBC3 resumes the showing of Series 5 tomorrow at 1945. Unfortunately it’s part 2 of the Silurian 2 parter “Cold Blood”.

What interested me about this is that, looking at the old Dan Martin blog with a paltry 220 comments or so, I don’t remember many of you around at that time (unless like me, you have regenerated since). It could be interesting to hear new thoughts though, and from people who were around at the time to see how their own perceptions had changed over time.

Is there any interest in either of the above? Or any other ideas?

I’ll pop back in an few hours to see if there is any feedback.

Hurray – As my Avatar appeared overnight from the temporal trap it was in, I presume whatever ailed me has cleared.

Look at its majesty and weep (remembers he has to be responsible now, and shuffles away).

Oh – something else as well. I read on the last blog you’d managed to watch some of the missing episodes on a DVD release. If we set up a separate thread at some point would you mind giving us your thoughts on it as a package? What it covers, special features etc? Might be a new conversation?

I saw the recreation of The Invasion recently and loved the way the animated episodes worked. They are doing another one later this month with Reign of Terror.

Right of to try to get to sleep (post New Year Insomnia is a killer!

On another tack, when we talk about “the 50th”, are we talking about the episodes that start in April? Because they will be over well before November 23. Or is it likely that there will a big movie-length stand-alone for Nov 23? Has anyone heard anything to this effect?

Yes – I was going to talk about that, you’ve reminded me!

I came across a news site when they announced that the eight episodes of 7b would be broadcast starting at Easter, which was later than I expected.

There is indeed a 90 minute special planned for the Anniversary and a one off drama about how the show was put together (penned by Mark Gatiss) this should link

Matt seemed to confirm he’ll be doing the Christmas Special next year, but no information about anyother episodes between the anniversary and Christmas Special 2013.

Will people run away from the blog if I mention something from “The Eleventh Hour”?

We’re presuming the Doctor is eliminating his own history.

In the Snowman he selects the recent entry in the journal by throwing the book in the Air and advising Richard E Grant “You should really delete your history….”.

And back in “TEH” he advised the hapless Jeff to do something similar after he created his “bit alive” virus to trap Prisoner Zero on his MYTH laptop.

@janetteb some good thoughts, particularly on other shows, and I guess we could look at it. I often see names on the G from the Who Blogs who ask for coverage and discussion on other TV shows (not only Dwarf, but also recently Merlin and Misfits, and suchlike). The next one may be “Being Human” which is due to start before the next series of Who, so it might be something to consider (The G used to do blogs on the series but stopped them a couple of series ago to much consternation).

    so Clara’s program

It would be really funny if Moffat is doing some of that wordplay he likes.

“Run you clever boy …. and remember”

    turns out to be

    10 RUN “You Clever boy”
    20 AND “Rememer”
    30 GOTO 10

Still having some issues, but I think I know what the problem is (Huzzah!)

@craig, thanks for the audio thread. If no one has any objections I’d certainly agree to help in any way I can (as Mod). Let me know if you want me to e-mail you (it might be at the weekend if that’s OK).

@blenkinsopthebrave, I think the story on the redesign is that the Who Team have moved studios to the new BBC’s Roath Lock Studios in Cardiff. I’ve heard it suggested that the cost of the move was about the same as rebuilding a new one. Don’t know if there is any deeper meaning to it.

Interesting with all our talk of breaking 4th walls, this set is the first to have all 4! It was why this set was suitable for that lovely tracking shot of Clara entering the TARDIS, and the wider variety of camera angles.

Not sure if these add anything to the mix. But I couldn’t help notice both Oswin/COOs appearances have featured telepathy:

Oswin: The Daleks, they have a hive mind. Well they don’t, but they have a sort of telepathic web.
    The Doctor: The pathweb, yes.
Oswin: I hacked into it. Did a master delete on all the information connected with the Doctor

And as I think @scaryb mentioned on the G blog, Clara seemed to get a really unusually strong reaction from the telepathic snow. Maybe she is a telepath (even if she’s not fully aware of it). It would certainly explain her use of “Pond” as a key word (by sensing the term from Jenny or Vastra). Would the act of being in the TARDIS allow her to bond with its telepathic circuits?

Loving the mirroring ideas and references.

Anyway hello again to new and old faces. I’m going to have to deal with my IT issues, but I will be back on Friday to have a play with this new format. If anyone is interested I mentioned that the Eighth Doctor is back on Radio 4 Extra on this coming Monday at 6o’clock. Maybe if others (who can) are going to listen we can establish a separate thread to talk about it.

Also hope we get a few more people coming over and in as the weekend comes in!

You know, when I was going on about Oswin being an artificial person, I thought I was being deeply original, but it’s only just occurred to me that I was probably just thinking about the Cylons in Battlestar Galactica who, when they died, transferred consciousness to another body.

I feel strangely inadequate now. Happy New Year everyone!

As a phase shifting chemist can I just say I’m disgusted with myself for not making the CO2 reference myself?

Carbon Dioxide is one of the few materials that, when it melts, changes phases directly from solid to gas (without the undoubted stress of having to be a liquid). Such materials are said to “Sublime” or undergo “Sublimation”.

In Ian M Banks sci-fi “Culture” novels, “to sublime” is to cast of the physical form and evolve to another intellectual plane (become disembodied). Hmmmm.
