This video is more than a little odd. I remember the track being likened to Black Sabbath channelling The Beatles, which actually seemed really appropriate. The video is a tirade against those gated suburban communities in the US.

Buddy made me think of sitting at the dinner table maybe 20 years ago and my dad saying “ah Lonnie Donegan – now he was a wild man”.
He didn’t elaborate much, but then my dad mentioned that he’d helped roadie/manage a skiffle group in Ireland! Probably in the 50’s/60’s. He never elaborated on that either!

Buddy’s music made me think of bluegrass so here’s some Gospel-influenced-bluegrass

Thank you to @thekrynoidman for Holly and also to @whisht for Lonnie. Nice as always to wake up (gloriously late after a week of impossible dead lines-they don’t call it ‘dead’ for nuttin) to some good ol’ fashioned rock. I actually dreamt about Dr Who last nite! Phew. Spirit in the Sky – muscular boogie with sweet vocals and harmony – a pure glam classic.
Glam wasn’t effete and I think this is a great example (‘brickies with glitter’ but can’t remember who’s quote).
I first heard this song as a cover by Doctor and the Medics and instantly dismissed it as fluff.
Stoopid me.
I shoulda looked for the original and heard some great boogie.

I remember the track but not the video (which seems true of most music from the 80’s, 90’s heck even noughties yet its not like I’ve been living in a video free cave.. don’t really know why it should be but most videos bring back Top of the Pops!

anyway, brilliant description of that Soundgarden track – and though this is not similar in terms of Beatles-ness it made me think of this. Not sure why.

Maybe because its a “track 6” and because I was thinking of writing a slightly longer-form music post (though not researched or erudite enough to class as a ‘blog post’ – those things take you guys time!)

For anybody who’s interested here’s the TV Movie The Birth of The Beatles. It’s never been released on any Home Video format and rarely gets shown on TV. It was the only Beatles biopic made while John Lennon was still alive and all 4 Beatles tried to stop it from being aired. The songs were performed by a Beatles cover band due to legal reasons. It’s got a number of inaccuracies but I think it’s pretty good, and probably the best Beatles biopic, although compared to some of the others that’s not saying a lot.

Soundgarden, long time no hear.

They seem to be making a bit of a comeback after ‘Live To Rise’ became part of the Avengers soundtrack. They’re supporting Black Sabbath at BST Hyde Park on the 4th July.

Thinks… Doctor Who connection … uh, Avengers is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where Guardians of the Galaxy is set, and Karen Gillan is in Guardians of the Galaxy! 😀

now apropos of nothing, in watching The Untouchables today, I didn’t know that three of my all time favs ‘put this film’ together: Ennio Morricone  (terrific score and I think @thekrynoidman loved a bit of Morricone with his soaring oboe); Brian de Palma and David Mamet. Now, I for one, did not know Mamet wrote this!  I loved Winslow Boy and yes, I  know the ‘rhythmic meter’ he favours can be odd and repetitive (and therefore soothing), but in its way, the writing (the chant) becomes the music: that last for @whisht.

For no good reason other than… well, I had a ‘big idea’ and have now thought better of it.

Also I’d entirely forgotten about this remix of the song I had in mind:

(its kinda deliberately unlistenable at the beginning – if you’re willing, give it time and the unlistenable bit makes sense overall imho).

which is rather… different to the remix. I like how the remix is itself a ‘big idea’ that I’m quite glad the artist had, especially as its so cheekily not like the original!

Well its July 4th and so for something for the American audience.

I feel for the English, Americans have fallen into that “easy/’amusing’ xenophobia” that the French inhabit (for the English), but its insidious as all bigotry is.

So, something revolutionary in its way, anti establishment, patriotic, incredible and beautiful.
Because 65 or 300 million people aren’t all the same.

Their soccer team at the World Cup was also something to be proud of – fantastic team effort, and wonderful to watch!

@whisht  @scaryb and @thekrynoidman   yep, great in every way. I showed this Hendrix excerpt to some uni students a few years ago and…sniff…they ..hated it! I mean the Aeolian mode should have got them; the movement into the minor key every 2nd bar -exactly on the beat every time. I listen and weep. Where has it all gone…..?  Hendrix is lovin’ every minute of it..and I mean lovin’ it.  Oh, and the Young Ones? It’s been a  long time. Thank you, puro.

oh @thekrynoidman  I totally agree about The Mission -but I was 25 and totally hooked on the movie: though it was gruesome and an epic with little script ‘moderation’ although maybe I was noticing someone’s chest at the time….

Yet, I thought I had good taste; hell, I loved The Shining, House of Cards and The Manchurian Candidate -maybe though, just once, the score made me love the film??? Now, he won best score for the one mentioned above. But you know, these days, if a score wins (or even a movie) then usually they’re crap….oh except for Argo. Great film. But remember 1995, Titanic with James bloomin Cameron? He swept them all….ick. But The Canadians might love Celine Dion…. eh @arbutus?

@purofilion I agree about film scores being crap nowadays. Aside from a couple, they are so unmemorable. I think that the problem is that pretty much all the great film composers are no longer with us, except for John Williams and Ennio Morricone. But Williams has just been repeating himself for the past few years, and neither of them is going to be here for very much longer. After that we’ll be stuck with Hanz Zimmer and that bloody “brummmm” sound effect he thinks is proper music.

@thekrynoidman I bow to your excellent taste whilst whining why doesn’t Brisbane play these films in their independent cinemas? Ah, that’s why! There’s only three-and they play mainstream stuff anyway.

I used to love a drive-in.  I remember going to a double feature with an aunt, my dad and me in the back. The first  was a tame animation and the second, well, it was Picnic at Hanging Rock and introduced me to all things horror/mystery: The Exorcist had come out and I was waaay too young but somehow saw it; of course Lynch’s Eraserhead (which I can never spell correctly) too and tTCM (can you work that one out?). Prizes if you can…Kindest, dobre noch, puro.

@purofilion We’ve only got a couple here in Newcastle as well. The one I went to was The Tyneside Cinema. I’ve seen several other classic films there like Jaws, Alien, Hitchcock’s The Lodger, Nosferatu, Psycho and even Dalek Invasion Earth 2150ad.

I hope they show Help! for it’s 50th anniversary next year as well.

Charlie Haden passed away.

Wonderful bassist.
Couldn’t find the recording of the piece that made me think “ooh – that bass is amazing” (which was a first time I ever thought of the bass rather than whatever was ‘lead’).
He played with many greats and on rifling through my iTunes I find he was on these.

and its rather lovely.

To my ears, it almost shares a melody of the more ‘awkward’ (but also wonderful) “Lonely Woman” from the ground-breaking album “The Shape of Jazz to Come” (though the rest of the album is a bit beyond the edge of me being able to listen).

@whisht  I love McLaughlin -saw him in concert here in Brisbane about 15 years ago? Sat in front row. Fantastic sound. Did Mr Ramone pass away today?? Big influence on Nirvana and other more recent (and possibly silly) bands…. R.I.P.

Hi @Purofilion – yes, Tommy Ramone also passed away on the same day.
He was the drummer and last surviving member of the original lineup.

I was thinking of linking to something by them too, but thought two obits a bit much!

Also I’ve never been as in to the amped-up-50’s-poprock Ramones as perhaps I should.

They’re always cited as a massive influence on the US Punk scene and who am I to argue?

They certainly have the energy, though they never seem to me as a “I can do that too” type band unlike the Pistols (and I guess I think of Punk as a mindset rather than just the music/noise).

But you’re right, now the original lineup are back together somewhere… so 1,2,3,4

Yes, I was very sad to see the news about Haden. Here is one of my favourites, with Pat Metheny. This has always felt to me like the string equivalent of Oscar Peterson’s Hymn to Freedom.

Also, yes, shocked to realize that the Ramones in their entirety are no longer with us. I don’t like feeling old!

Hi @arbutus – long time no hear! Glad you’re well!

That’s a lovely piece by Haden – I’ve not heard it before (I don’t really have any Pat Metheny – unless you count the Orb!).

I was looking for a piece Gavin Bryars wrote specially for Haden called “By the Vaar” from an album called “Farewell to Philosophy” but I can only find versions with other bassists playing it. Its only a distant memory as I don’t have the album anymore, but hearing it was the first time I thought “God that bass is sinuous and tender”.

Anyway, thought I’d post this for the final part of The Hitchiker’s Guide to the Galaxy – pretty obvious I guess, in terms of “Disaster Area”, but still.
This is the Ummagumma version – I actually got this on tape from a girl at school and was where I first heard early Floyd.

Ah, to be given cassettes by girls with Goth eyeliner, because “I’d understand” (or somesuch).

Oh, no. It’s been a tough couple of weeks in the music world. Thanks for that, @thekrynoidman. Here’s some of the kind of thing I was listening to when I first became familiar with Winter, back in the early eighties. I was just diving headfirst into all kinds of vintage blues, listening to indie radio blues shows late at night, and this kind of thing just blew me away.

@whisht I echo @arbutus (how are you goin’ btw?) about The Floyd . Good choice. Always up for a bit of Floyd. I was 17 and a friend brought around his album of Dark Side of The Moon but my parents banned him from playing it on our stereo! We had this quadraphonic thing which was pretty awful, really, but everybody loved it back then. In the end, we found another more likeable neighbour and had a ‘legal’ drink and a ….smoke….we were the coolest kids for about 2 hours.

I salute you, @purofilion! Hope you are feeling well and the weather has finally cooled down for you. All is well here. I was AWOL for a few weeks due to a combination of my son’s school year wrapping up in the middle of teacher/government labour unrest, and the end of his baseball season. Then we blew out of town on an awesome 9-day trip into the Canadian Arctic, where the sun currently doesn’t set and (some) people freeze their food in the permafrost. Fabulous.

Here is a song for you, an ode to the north by Canada’s late lamented Stan Rogers. I had it in my head much of the time we were away.

Now we are home and it is summer, Vancouver’s best time, except that I am finding it terrifically hard to get work done! I just want to spend all my time poking around in the garden, and drinking wine on the patio. Setting my own deadlines works great in the winter, not so well in July and August.  🙂

Some ‘Music news’ that isn’t an Obit (hooray!).

Sadly it seems like the wonderful Hilliard Ensemble are having a farewell tour this year. Not sure why they’re wrapping up an incredible career, but perhaps age has simply caught up (there doesn’t seem to be any other reason).

I managed to snag a coupla tickets to their last concert of Officium with Jan Garbarek in King’s College Cambridge in December. My brother was most pleased!

I’ll admit I haven’t listened to it much since buying it way back when. However I have seen them perform it before (years ago) and it was amazing!

In other Music news, it seems Slint are on tour (they split after releasing their 2nd/third album and have reformed and split since then – I haven’t been keeping up!).

They’re a different kind of intensity to Officium. Intense, edgy, claustrophobic – their album “Spiderland” is one of those that I rarely put on as it needs to be listened to in its entirety as it builds in emotion.

If you can’t give it the 40 mins of the whole album (in a dark room at full volume while regressing to anguished teenager), I’ll link to the final track Good Morning Captain.

Actually on second thoughts, I’ll link to this version of Rhoda – this should blast the cobwebs away.

(hm, you may need a bit more Hilliard Ensemble after that…)

Yes, I read about that awhile back. I think it is just a case of getting older and slowing down. I was lucky enough to hear them back in the nineties, doing renaissance English music intermixed with contemporary. Frankly, I would go a long way to hear Rogers Covey-Crump sing the phone book, what an amazing tenor voice. Because I can, here he is with Emma Kirkby, doing a bit from the Bach B-minor Mass, and here again singing Dowland.

I heard them doing something along these lines, although I don’t remember the exact program.

I had a bit of a listen to your Slint, I’m not familiar with them. I will get back to it during the week when I have a little privacy around here.   🙂

btw I came across this wonderful and touching portrait of Charlie Haden from NPR’s Fresh Air programme.

Terry Gross is an amazing interviewer and this was made up of some of the interviews she conducted with Haden over a number of years. At one point she gets him to sing – something he’s not done in 40 (50?) years after losing his singing ability to Polio at 15 (a tragedy as he was a singer since the age of 2! Though also incredibly lucky as Polio so often killed).

Hearing him sing is incredibly touching and shows that that was what he was doing through his bass playing.

Hi @whisht and @arbutus thank you for your contribution. Pleased to note, I did listen to the whole Slint, OK; I was making the bed and cleaning the bathroom (day off) but the bit at 5.30 and 6 mins ( (ba-di-ba-di-di-ba-di-ba: what the heck!!) sounds exactly like the opening track to Webber’s JC Superstar: opening number in fact. I swear! I got out the album and put it thru the amp and 6 track thingy in the study…

Well champagne and 3 cheers for Hilliard and all their work: I too saw them OS years ago. The colour of envy am I Whisht! I can’t do the emoticon that changes colour!  Clueless. Amazed I can link to anything really….which I haven’t done in a while.

just a question: on the album cover (Spiderland), that is the band?: not a stupid question, because in the water they all look like the same person to me! Just curious.

Hi @purofilion – yep that’s the band in the photo. They were just kids at the time, teenagers.

Actually the photo was taken by Bonnie Prince Billie whose only song that I really know is a fantastic song but a bit ‘down’ for tonight (though one of the best I’ve heard describing depression).

It was covered by Johnny Cash and I think Bonnie Prince Billie even appeared on that version.

But your brilliant link to Jesus Christ Superstar (great spot!!) has given me very fun memories of playing Jesus in school plays age 8 or 9! (luckily I can’t remember singing in it, though now listening to the album I recognise songs that we sung!).

The Guardian ran a list of covers of the theme and I certainly don’t remember this in it.

About to go to sleep having watched some more Sherlock  -ssh!  When I wake up in about 8 hours I hope there’ll be some more excellent music on the thread!
