I loved the intro episode and the Rosa episode.

The Ghost episode was a yawn, the spider episode silly the Pting episode zany but silly

the Partition episode was a little Romeo and Juliet  romance for 9 year old girls.

The companions remain like little children although to be fair time travel does take time getting used to.

The first episode had a couple of quality scary monster’ s but since then nothing  at all.

I think the teletubbies is more scary and has more  challenging themes.

Honestly this episode was pitiful.

Turning a boring dispatch  job at Ikea into an exciting drama was a decent premise but there was no drama.

It was so low key and the robots were not even marginally scary.

So school play like.

Really hard to stay awake.

Can only get better with the witch hunting next week.

No Kerblam more like Kerflop 🙁

Chibnall really is an amazing writer.

The Dr again was fantastic.

This is the best DR Who series ever.

Camp, corny and so British.

I watched 3 Dr Who episodes in 1968 as a pre teen and have just rejoined the series.

Yes I missed 50 years and 200 episodes so I bring a “unique” perspective.

My memories of those 3 episodes in 1968 broadcast in black and white

was how bleak and ultra budget the sets were while the DR was the

earnest grammar school science teacher playing in his apple box time machine

meeting and sparring with  scary cardboard “monsters”.

50 years on and what has changed. To my eyes not much really.

Yes the Dr is a woman and there is a heavy influx of coloured people

and a man even had a baby but the basic tenets of the programme remain.

When a  scary force is encountered the eccentric DR and her

rag tag band through a series of often whacky deductions, laughing in the face of the enemy

and a generous dose of “c’mon chaps look lively” defeat the scary monster.

And so the Dr, the Tardis the world/universe is saved once again.

This modern fab four just like their predecessors the famous  five

once more win the day and as usual  get home on time for tea.

My Dr Who back story

I first saw Dr Who in the late 1960’s in black and white here in New Zealand.

I watched about 2 programmes.

I liked the theme music and the Darlicks.

The show looked like it was made in a garage with the  props all made out of cardboard. [Probably was 🙂 ]

I thought the programme very grey and amateurish  so I stopped watching.

Jump forward 20 years it’s 1988 I liked the Time Lords video “Dr Who”

So before this year I had missed 12 Dr’s and 200 episodes.

 

Time warp forward another 30 years and I drop in again on Dr Who.

I was drawn in by the first female Dr .

I am so happy with the new Dr DR as the older male Dr/ pretty teenage girl theme was creepily incestuous.

This Dr has no obvious toy boy love interest as Ryan and Yaz seem to be connecting. Graham?

No doubt a black DR then a Gay DR will follow. then an android then …

Any way I loved the first double episode new characters set in Yorkshire 2018 was great.

The ghost ship episode was like an early star trek / Lost in space alien desert planet  silly  gig.

Rosa was outstanding so good , too good perhaps.

The scary spider gig scared nobody because after a trillion scary monster movies

these past 50 years  who is scared of any thing any more.

Those spiders were silly plain silly but fun and the poor mummy spider got shot..aww

by the  Donald Trump character with the terrible American accent (on purpose) was ridiculously jolly.

After this and the Rosa episode  they might wanna lighten up on the bad white male characters.

The 50 year hiatus and 200 eps missed don’t seem to matter to me.

Like I missed nothing at all 🙂

I am always wary of any “historical” programme as the style will be tailored to suit the target audience.

Brits have an “American” perspective which we all know by heart and this episode

was cliched to the max with regards Britt  steryotyping the deep south 1950’s USA.

All we needed was U2’s 1988 “rattle and hum cliche of the USA but Adele filled in at the end

and I just kicked back and enjoyed the scenery and the banter.

The Krasco James Dean character, the sweet (too sweet really) Rosa character

and the tough, ingenious quirky Doctor character really made this episode.

A tad heavy with the stereotyping and warm fuzzy ending but hey overall a good watch.

9.7 /10 🙂
