Just got in and it is bloody cold in London, and I’m from Scotland! Also, had a few ales so apologies if I’m a bit sarcastic e.g @juniperfish why does it not surprise me that you want yet another topic! ๐Ÿ™‚ Any more and I will set @blenkinsopthebrave on to you. “Faces of the Doctor” is a good idea though. Please go ahead and set that up @phaseshift

    I am such a softie!

The Lodger issue is my bad. Phaseshift got there before me and I didn’t check. I’ll try and merge the two tomorrow. Apologies.

Will also look into the whole memory strand thing. I don’t think I have any more permissions than splitting a thread, but will check. I was actually thinking about it last night (you guys keep me awake at night) and thought maybe @juniperfish you would like to change your mega-post into our first blog post. With a few tweaks it could really work. I’m not sure I can turn follow ups into comments on a blog, but if not they can be copied and pasted. Although I like database hacking, so probably not a problem.

Sorry, still in our infancy here and still learning!

@juniperfish No worries. And I always liked the joke that it was the Doctor who was hiding behind the sofa.

    Cheers @bluesqueakpip

I’m only just getting used to this myself, but some of those options are definitely available. It is certainly possible to move a post, or posts, to another topic. I can also split a topic from a certain post, so if a topic goes completely “off topic” it is easy to move all posts from a certain point into a new topic.

I’m not sure about being able to make one post show up in several different topics. That’s maybe a good thing though, as the poster thinks they are only posting in one topic. But I may be wrong.

Linking between threads isn’t something built in, but anyone can link to any comment on any topic just by linking to the number/link at the top right of any post (opposite the post’s date).

Re chronology, the topics on the forums pages (once you drill down) are also ordered in terms of which one has been posted to most recently. And we also have the Activity page which shows you all recent activity.

In addition, if we do start to get really busy, anybody can choose to “Friend” users, and get an Activity stream of just their friends contributions (I think).

So there are quite a few useful tools. But please let me know if you think things are getting out of hand. And if you want to be a Mod yourself, let me know, sounds like you know what you’re doing.

I am still deeply grateful that we Enthusiasts have a dedicated site to share our thoughts and reflections, but, I also find myself missing the feel of the single, ongoing conversation.

I completely agree with you. That’s why I’m reluctant to set up too many topics, it does fracture the conversation. If I’m honest I’m not used to a forum like this. My experience of forums has mostly been technical ones about building websites where users start a new topic almost every time they post, usually along the lines of “Help, how do I do this?” Then I would go on and answer their question. Those sites have thousands of topics with a few replies, but that is how it should be.

This is different, and if anyone with more experience of this sort of forum wants to provide some sage advice, I’m very happy to hear it (I think @bluesqueakpip said they helped out on a BUffy one). I’ve had a look at a few other Doctor Who forums (at least the ones you don’t have to register for) and many of them have not edited the software or changed permissions and so allow all users to start topics. They are therefore a lot more fractured than this. For example, this one has 652 pages of topics:
    http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=183

I think the current issues are probably due to the fact that we are very few users at the beginning of an experiment, as @juniperfish said. As we grow (which I expect will only really happen once the new series starts) more and more people will be making more and more posts. Hopefully it will get to a point where no one can possibly read every post, but you will just find topics and conversations you enjoy, follow them and join in. At that point it should be much more like the old Guardian threads. I do hope so.

Many thanks. It’s been my pleasure. You guys (and I include women in that too, like actor for all, not actor and actress – hopefully I’m not offending anyone) have entertained me for the last few years on The Guardian while I’ve been lurking. This seems like the least I could do to pay you back.

And I kinda enjoy it. I’ve messed about with these programmes but never really run a proper community site before. This one is developing as it grows, and that’s a lot of fun. It’s like watching my baby grow. And I’m learning new stuff all the time.

Re a thread for LindaLee or a thread for newbies such as Here be Dragons (not), I’m not so sure, at the mo. I’m not a big fan of forums that have thousands of topics but each topic only has a few comments. I’d like to keep the site focused, at least for now, on the essentials. I think it makes it better for everyone. But I am open to change as things develop.

But if you disagree, just let me know. I’m not the boss here, just the facilitator. And that will always be the case.

A little off topic, but I always thought Craig Ferguson was an arse (at least in his early days). Turns out there was a reason for that. Then I saw this, when he went on TV the week that Brittany Spears shaved her head, and talked about his battle with alcohol. Having known people with alcohol problems, I have never had more respect for anyone than I did for him then (the audience I’m not so sure about).

Well worth 12 minutes of your life, and his book about it, if you’re interested, is even better.

My earliest memories of Doctor Who are of the final days of Pertwee. I had just turned 4 when Planet of the Spiders was broadcast and remember bits and pieces which scared the hell out of me. But it wasn’t really until the first series of Baker that it really started to make an impression.

And no wonder with such a great start to a series. First a giant Robot, which will ever be ingrained on my memory (what little boy wouldn’t love that?), and then The Ark in Space, which really creeped me out. It featured more giant spidery things, and Noah transforming into a Wirrn must be the most disturbing thing I had ever seen at that point. From then on I was definitely hooked.

I haven’t actually ever gone back and watched those episodes as I fear I may be disappointed now. Part of me wants to, but mostly I want to retain the way I felt then, as a child, when I watched them the first time.

Don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t so much bemoaning the fact that part 2 will be crap because it may be lower budget, I totally agree that budget limitations can often lead to much more creativity. My point was more that there may be a reason for that, that it could point to the Anniversary Special being something very, very big indeed, with a lot of blow-your-mind spectacular scenes.

    I do hope so.

I just watched the trailer again and it seems to me there may be an episode entirely on a boat/submarine, another entirely in a monastery, another in modern-day London (possibly with a plane sequence), and there is another episode supposedly entirely set in the TARDIS. Another looks like it is back in Victorian London with Jenny and Vastra, so will probably have been filmed back-to-back with the Christmas Special.

All that makes me think there may be a bit of budget-saving going on and they may be planning to blow the whole lot on the Anniversary Special. Kinda makes me slightly less excited about part 2 of the series (although Blink was supposed to be the cheap non-Doctor episode, so who knows), but am looking forward to that Special even more.

    A blog for the site

Dear all, @juniperfish raised the possibility of adding articles to the site yesterday. There is a blog function that I have currently turned off which could be used for that. I can make anyone who wants to post a blog or article an “author” so that they can do so. It would operate just like the Guardian blogs, but I will of course turn off nested comments!

I think it’s a good idea. It will give us a chance to explore different topics that might not fit with the more general chat on the forums. It will also be good link-bait and improve search engine rankings.

It will be a place to post whatever you want that you think your fellow members might be interested in. Juniperfish was keen to write one on the evolving sexuality of the Doctor over time, but it could be something as simple as “My favourite Doctor” or something more in-depth and off-topic as “The Theory of Black Holes” (also suggested by Juniperfish, although she said she couldn’t write that herself).

So if you want to contribute something, let me know. I look forward to hearing from all those budding (or even professional) writers out there.

@juniperfish I don’t think this is a spoiler as it is on Wikipedia, but one of the episodes is called something like “Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS” and supposedly tales place completely within it. It may well be the season’s cheap episode, lots of shots of the same corridor, but could be good if done well.

I heard Gaiman had to cut scenes of the swimming pool in the TARDIS for budgetary reasons from The Doctor’s Wife, so I’m leaning towards the cheap episode theory, but you never know.

But I wanted to say thanks for posting those links. I think that must have taken real courage. I’m sorry about your friend. I wonder what Moffat thinks of Jamie? He’s Scottish and Moffat does have a fondness for his Scottish characters and jokes.

I met Moffat just after The Eleventh Hour aired and mentioned the Scottish jokes and he said “Oh, there’s a lot more of them coming” What fun he could have.

Jamie’s also had his memory of the Doctor wiped, a theme of this season I think. As a fellow Scot I think it would be fun to have Jamie back for an episode. He’s also an historical companion and there’s only been a few of them. God knows what his legs would look like in a kilt now though.

Wow, suggestions coming thick and fast today people. Great!

@scaryb I’ve increased the latest posts to 15. You can also click the Activity tab to see what’s been going on recently.

I’ll go through the list of possible forum topics tonight and draw up a plan.

As for SEO, I’m pretty good at it and advise companies on it, I just haven’t had time to do any yet but there are a few things to fix with this template that will make it more search engine friendly. However, if you search for “The Doctor Who Forum” with quotes around, it we are 7, 8 and 9 in Google, which is not bad for a brand new site. It just takes time.

@juniperfish there is a blog function and I was going to ask people if they wanted to write articles/blogs for it. That is not a problem at all. If you want to write something, do so and then I can make you an “Author” on the blog so that you can post it.

Re registered members, I did email them. One of them was Juniperfish, which is how she finally thankfully got here. I also added another 2 people who haven’t posted yet I don’t think. However, when I looked closely a lot of them seemed to be spambot sign-ups (which is why the confirmation process is required before you can post). But I’m keeping my eye on it and will continue to email people if they look genuine and haven’t confirmed after a few days.

Sorry if I haven’t dealt with everything here – will have a lot more time this evening.

Hi all, regarding cross-posting, I’m loathe to shut down comments on a topic a la The Guardian and face your wrath :-). I was thinking that maybe this topic should be restricted to the events of The Snowmen and speculation about Clara, and theories about what’s going to happen next go elsewhere (although I realise it’s a fine line between those things).

What do people think of another thread about Series 7 part 2? There we can discuss the future of The Doctor in this series, the return of the Cybermen in Gaiman’s episode etc. Or is it starting to get messy and slightly complicated already? I’m happy to go with the flow for now. This is, after all, an evolving thing.

I just listened to it and, although I’ve never listened to any Eighth Doctor Big Finish stories I still thought it was good. Had no idea about any of the back story, but picked it all up as it went along. That’s the sign of a good script I guess. And it had real heart without being maudlin or schmaltzy.

It was interesting because it very much focused on Lucie, the companion, and the Doctor was a secondary character. They only get away with that one episode a year on TV, and for budgetary reasons only. But this really felt like an episode written for Lucie, out of a fondness for her, which I quickly developed (despite my never having met her before). And Aunt Pat was great too.

Shame there were a few references to the Eighth’s style of clothing, him looking “like a ponce”. Guess he’s still not got that short haircut and the leather jacket. Maybe he only dons that when he goes to war!

P.S. @phaseshift, have searched for a hack I’m happy with that will allow the posting of pictures. Think I may have it but will attempt it when the site is less busy.

Hi all, ah yes, spoilers. What to do? I’m not a fan of plot points but I don’t mind knowing, for example, who is starring in an episode.ย  However, if David Tennant or Tom Baker were confirmed I’d be annoyed to find that out as it points to a significant plot point. So there are always degrees.

One option is, of course, a spoilers thread. Another option would be a Spoilers group. I’ve not used the groups function, but I think that what went on in a private group would hopefully not show up in the activity stream for everyone else to see. I wouldn’t want to be a member though so I’ll have to think how that could maybe be set up if that is an option people might want to try.

As a fellow Scot, I loved Tony Curran in this (and almost everything else he’s in), and as much as I hate Curtis for his many abominations such as Love Actually, and almost everything else he’s done, who can’t fail to love a tale about Vincent, his unrecognised genius, and a final reel full of real appreciation. Shmaltzy, but for everyone who’s ever felt under appreciated (which is probably everyone at one time or another), a piece of beauty.

Thanks @phaseshift, I’ll email them tomorrow. And really, I’m only standing on the shoulders of giants. I use WordPress a lot so am very familiar with it, so that maybe helps, but I’ve never used the BuddyPress plugin before (except as a test install) as have never had to create a community. But it really is a plug-and-play community website. You just have to change a few settings to suit your preferences, edit the odd file, like adding the disclaimer in the footer, and Robert is, as they say, your Uncle.

This man, another Matt, along with the huge team that helps out, is the one who deserves all the kudos. Not really interested in profit, just producing the best software he can: http://www.forbes.com/sites/jjcolao/2012/09/05/the-internets-mother-tongue/. He’s still worth about $20 million – but that’s nowhere near Zuckerberg, and I would argue he’s done much, much more for a free and accessible web for all, without sucking the soul out of everyone who uses his product.

@phaseshift That reminds me, I was looking at the list of users today and we have 17 people who have signed up but not confirmed, one of whom is Juniperfish.

I had to help @stevethewhistle confirm his status on Friday as he hadn’t received an email to do so. Was wondering what people thought about me emailing people just to ask if they had problems in creating an account. I’d hate to lose members just because of early teething troubles with the site (which I hope are now over as I emailed the hosting company and asked them to increase our email limit – which they put in place to stop spamming sites).

So, should I send them all an email or wait until they contact me?

Hi all, as you can see I’ve finally had some time to do some work on the site. I’ve added a header image, got rid of all the rounded corners (they’re like, so 2010!), darkened the text a bit, tightened it up as well, and changed the link colour to a more “Tardis” blue. I’ve removed Groups and Blog too as I didn’t see much point in them for now. If the site starts to really grow it might be worth putting them back.

I’ve also added a couple more widgets in the sidebar. The “Recent posts” one is especially useful because, if you click on the topic name it will take you straight to the last post in that topic with a single click.

I also found a hack that sorted out the avatar problem so they are not blurry anymore – check me out in all my glory :-D. Some avatars got automatically upgraded, but most of you will have to re-upload your avatar if you want to look sharp. Best to load an image that is at least 150px by 150px if possible, but a minimum 80px by 80px is okay.

I think it’s looking okay now and will probably leave it for a while and see how things develop. Now I just have to create an attractive Home page!

No offence taken at all @wolfweed. I was just voicing my to-do list out loud so that I’d force myself to do it this weekend, if it’s possible to fix. Should be though (hopefully).

My idea of a ‘Book Club’ was partly an idea to get more threads going, but mostly a great way to introduce people to the best episodes/stories. I’m a fan, but I’ve not got every DVD available. But if someone much more knowledgeable than me nominated a story that we could all discuss in a week’s time I’d probably get it and watch it.

For example, for my sins I don’t think I’ve ever seen The Talons of Weng-Chiang despite beginning with Pertwee and trying not to miss any episodes. My parents took me to Hong Kong for two years from 1975-1977. How could they?! It’s one I want to see but have a million things competing for my time.

Have just caught up with The Walking Dead, am now catching up with Boardwalk Empire, and Breaking Bad… well, it’s currently a pipe dream, so to speak :-D. However, a ‘Book Club’ discussion on The Talons of Weng-Chiang would probably give me the push I need to watch it, and I’d bet a few others on here would too.

Then again, the Eighth Doctor audio starts next week on Radio 4 Extra, and I have to admit I’ve not listened to many of the Big Finish stories either, so maybe that’s something to focus on next week. As I understand it there’s an episode on every day next week.

@wolfweed Avatars are another thing I have to fix. For some reason it’s been coded to show a 50px avatar blown up to 80px, hence everyone looking a little blurry at the mo, although that could just be that the New Year has taken its toll. Hopefully by the end of the weekend you’ll look less like a mouldy weetabix seen through clingfilm, and more like just a mouldy weetabix.

Thanks @janetteb and @phaseshift. I will try and find some time this weekend to make the site more welcoming, haven’t had much time to breathe since I set it up. Any suggestions for old Who threads would be much appreciated.

I’ve added topics for all the episodes in the latest series but no comments yet. However, that’s maybe to be expected. But you got me thinking that we could be like my Mum’s book group. Maybe all watch the same old Who story one week, then chat about it afterwards. I think that would be pretty cool.

I’m also quite happy to set up other forums for other programmes. That sounds like a great idea. It kinda doesn’t fit with the site name but who cares? In the future I can always port the whole site to some sort of SciFiForum.com URL anyway.

I’ve now made you, @phaseshift, a Mod, but for some reason that doesn’t come with Forum creation rights, just Topic creation rights. As I said on the other blog, hopefully I can fix that with a bit of hacking. Hi @phaseshift. I’ve now “rebooted” you to Moderator status. You can now create new topics within Forums.ย  Unfortunately it seems only I can create new forums but hopefully that shouldn’t be a problem. I will be looking into how I can change/add permissions to make this all a bit easier, but the board uses a new version of BBPress and there’s not too much documentation or tips on hacking it been produced so far. I’ll be having a go this weekend though.

All you need to do is hover over “The Doctor Who Forum” in the very top bar and click on Dashboard. You’ll then be able to access topics. By hovering over the topic link you can add a new one and choose which forum it should go in.

You can also now do some terrible things, like Trash a whole topic, delete member posts or mark them as spam etc. So I’m hoping you’re not as evil as your old avatar suggested! Although I’m one to talk. ๐Ÿ™‚

Hey @scaryb, and everyone else, yes, there is an inbuilt edit function, thankfully. I’ve left it on the default, which gives you 5 minutes to edit after posting. I think that’s about right as it’s usually in the first few seconds after posting that you notice that typo you never did before, but stops you editing a post later on just because someone disagrees with something you said, or something.

I was thinking about the Doctor’s seeming loss of memory and, apologies if this is going over old ground, but if Clara is inhabiting the Tardis software then maybe she is wiping his memory somehow as he travels, much like she wiped the Daleks’ memory of him. Quite why, I’m not sure, but she’s very smart, may have seen all time and space, and maybe it’s better for him if he can’t answer “the question” when it is asked.

Ugh, my head feels like a box of broken biscuits, but Happy New Year to everyone! We are now officially in the 50th Anniversary year. Looking forward to many exciting times here and on the screen.ย  Glad to see so many more people signed up, even some of my fellow lurkers. Talking of which, @SallySparrow is right, the discussions here are just as much fun, if not more so, than the show itself, and long may they continue.

I’m really torn between theories. I love @blenkinsopthebrave‘s theory that Clara is the Doctor’s daughter. Itย  is a great idea which I want to be true, it would pull everything right around to the beginnings of Who, and as Nathaniel Morgan said, could lead to an origins story for the 50th. That would be fantastic and has been continually hinted at in the Eleventh’s reign in episodes such as The Big Bang (telling the young Amy how he stole a blue box) and The Doctor’s Wife (Idris blabbing out all his secrets from his past). All of that could well be all foreshadowing of an origins story.

However, I find it hard to fit that to the facts. Clara seems to be some sort of entity that we haven’t met before – a time travelling, death defying being. So I’m leaning more towards the theories regarding her as some sort of computer program version of a person (like River’s final state – obviously something Moffat is keen on) that has become part of theย  Tardis via download and so can appear when the Doctor needs her. He was at his lowest in the Christmas episode and suddenly she turns up and he is instantly smitten (in a non-romantic way) and starts living again.

That’s my take so far, but I await all of your fantastic musing. Some of them will turn out to be bonkers, some of them will be incredibly prescient, and some of them will be better than anything Moffat finally comes up with. You are all clever, clever people and once again, I wish you a Happy New Year.

Cheers all. Just got in from a rather long pre-New Year lunch so great to see who’s already signed up.

It’s still a work in progress, all websites are, but post-New Year I’ll get stuck into a nice design and improve the usability a bit by cleaning up the interface. Requests for features, suggestions for structure or look and feel, criticisms etc. are most welcome (although may not always be possibleย  to do/change!)
