Yeah. The way I look at the companions from the audioplays of the Eighth Doctor mentioned in Night of the Doctor is that, yes, the Doctor did indeed travel with those companions on various adventures, but not necessarily what happened in the audio plays. The companions have been made canon in terms of TV, but not necessarily the adventures they had detailed in those audioplays. It’s sort of how the rebooted Star Wars canon has done away with the Extended Universe canon of the old spin off comics and novels, but yet the new canon slowly is reintroducing aspects of that old canon (like Grand Admiral Thrawn), and while much is the same, a lot is different in terms of events surrounding them in the new timeline. So, yes, the Eighth Doctor definitely traveled with those companions canonically speaking, but that doesn’t necessarily make the audioplays with those companions canon, if that makes sense.

There are a number of continuity issues with the novels (between themselves and even in regards to the TV show), as sort of shown here:

Obviously those are pretty minor differences and can be explained as being due to hijinks in the timeline, or acknowledged as just being mistakes made by the authors or scriptwriters.

However, we also have to acknowledge that the events in the Doctor Who timeline have been retconned before, too.

I know there is no official declaration by the BBC and showrunners as to what is canon, but I like to think only the stuff produced by BBC is canon. I know many consider the audioplays, comics, novels, etc as canon, though I know there are also instances of conflicts regarding continuity in certain cases (though those can probably be explained as alternate timelines).
That said, at this point I’m just focusing on the TV related officially produced BBC stuff. I know DW canon is up to the viewer, but I’d also read that the BBC doesn’t necessarily consider the spin off material (novels, comics, audioplays) as canon due to not wanting to force fans to buy that supplemental material to get “the whole story”. If that remains true or not, I can’t say.

Anyway, I’ve been doing loads of research prepping my chronological viewing order for the show and it’s spin offs.

Its complete for the time being, with all episodes and specials and minisodes and spin off episodes listed (Torchwood, Sarah Jane Adventures, Class, K-9), and I think it’s in correct chronological order based on research and suggestions from fellow Whovians on other DW forums (such as corrections for the old show and new, specifically reordering some of the original show’s Season 25 and 26 episodes).

Let me know what you think, if you think anything needs fixing or adjusting.

Brand new Doctor Who fan here. Had been recommended for years by friends, and I finally decided to give it a try.

I never do things half-assed, so I’m starting from the VERY beginning, William Hartnell’s First Doctor (including the reconstructions of lost episodes). So far, I’m enjoying it, even with the low production budgets and limited special effects of the time, which gives it a sort of Star Trek (Original Series) kind of charm, but thoroughly its own thing.

Finished Keys of Marinus last night and will be jumping into The Aztecs tonight.

I expect this viewing project to take awhile (maybe years) slowly making my way through the 26 original seasons and the 10 seasons of the revival show, not to mention its various specials and minisodes.

Does anyone know of a good episode chronology for the revival show, which incorporates placements for all the specials and mini episodes/webisodes, as well as Torchwood, Sarah Jane Adventures, and Class? Also, is the 2009-2010 K-9 show considered Doctor Who canon or not (I know the 1981 pilot episode is)?

I’m attempting to build a chronological viewing order/simplified timeline, using relative time of the main characters without the time travel stuff affecting order/placement of the episodes, just wanted some info on the newer stuff’s chronological order since there are so many specials and minisodes to account for, plus the spin-offs. I’ve found numerous such guides online but few or none include EVERYTHING, many are missing minisode entries or the spin-off shows. I’m just looking for a complete Whoniverse episode chronology. Any help on that front would be greatly appreciated as I slowly wade through the early adventures. Thanks in advance!
