@faegrl, did you do that? It’s really good! I love montages when they are well assembled, and they aren’t always. I also enjoy the art of matching video clips to music. It can be okay, or it can be really wonderful. I love that song (I hadn’t heard it either) and agree with @whisht that it absolutely nails the Tenth Doctor: the gradual move from playful to egotistical to borderline megalomaniacal, and then full circle back to “Hello, I’m the Doctor, want to take a trip through time and space… just for fun?”   😀

@whisht    I wasn’t familiar with Mornington Crescent, but it was pretty funny nonetheless! I loved the ridiculous remarks made in the eerily-accurate tones of the sat-nav system. I then looked up the background of the game and it all made sense (sort of).

Hi @arbutus – yes, that ‘Mornington Crescent’ is a bit of a weird one for someone who’s never heard it before!
For anyone unfamiliar, its a game within a panel-gameshow on BBC Radio 4.
The gameshow (“I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue”) is very long-running and that’s part of its ‘charm’ (it creaks, the gags are prehistoric, and that’s kinda the fusty point).

The whole show is pretty nonsensical but Mornington Crescent is specifically absurd(ist) in that it has no rules. The performers ad-lib their way through it as if it was strictly rule-bound. The creation of tension, “oh, good move..” “You can’t do that!” “Masbricht Manoeuvre dear chap..” etc is part of the humour.

The sat-nav is a gag in this episode, in that they’re trying desperately to be ‘modern’ which in the context is a gag in itself. btw I don’t listen to ISIHAC often but feels appropriate after watching Quatermass! (the whole “am I in 1950’s England?” vibe!).

@whisht – Yes! I agree, the song is SO Ten. I believe the Whovian who created the video is very spot on and that’s why I love it so much. And Ten had that “me, me, me” ego to him, very much. I loved him for it, anyway. 🙂

@Abutus – Nah! I am not that talented to create such a video. LOL! But I’m flattered that you thought so. No another talented Whovian on Youtube created this masterpiece. I also appreciate videos that match scenes with music lyrics. I tried to do one once… it was lame and of the cartoon “Invader Zim” to a repetitive trance song. It was not nearly as clever as this Doctor Who one. 🙂

Don’t worry if the answer (for listening to your gifted CD)  is ‘never’.  Billie’s smile was always mega-watts bigger than her singing voice.

But … you seem to have had a Valentine’s Day story and one, now, which has changed.  Either way, there is a furrily curly shoulder here to hear your story.  (It will at least allow me to shrug my bony skinny brother’s shoulder off – eek, it’s like a knife-edge.)

@faegrl   I remember seeing that video, hilarious! Big Proclaimers fan here, I’m very fond of those boys, and do they ever have pipes! I saw them last summer at an outdoor performance here, and was terribly impressed at their vocal power, even twenty-something years on. They were very businesslike, not much chit-chat, just got as many tunes out as they could fit in. And not a whole lot of body movement, all the energy emerging through their voices. (This impressed my son a lot, as he has always sung that way himself. He used to put on his Lego Rock Band game, assume the position in front of the TV, mic in hand, and perform all these great old rock songs without moving a muscle!)

Came on this morning to find this massive list of rainy weather songs. Very appropriate as it was pouring down here as well (although the sun has now come out and I’m seeing nice patches of blue here and there). So I have spent an enjoyable half hour working through the rain repertoire.

@purofilion    Tough to learn anything about Skubas on the internet, as all the links seem to be in Polish. That’s a lovely track, but is it the “featured artist” doing the singing? (I’ve learned a lot from my son recently, and one of those things is “DJ” vs. “featured artist”. It’s a changed world.

@fatmaninabox  Nice list. I haven’t heard 10,000 Maniacs in years, and the Weather Girls do bring a nostalgic smile. I hadn’t come across Blyth Power before. But I must agree with puro that the last one wins. BJ Thomas’s voice singing about rain but filled with sunshine, and Butch Cassidy was possibly my favourite film during my early teens!

@faegrl No men falling from the sky in Minnesota? What about snowmen?  🙂 The Real Tuesday Weld are new to me, what an interesting fusiony style they have. I love it when I hear someone performing music that is clearly the way it is because it’s what they want to do, and not what sells records or makes hits!

ha ha – Hi @ScouttheAiredale – yes of course I remember you and your brother and of course I listened to Billie!

There’s plenty of Madonna-lite/ pre-teen/ ‘party-Spice Girls’ songs, but it gets (even) better with the later tracks which are more like slow grooves (I Dream and Honey to the B which are ‘actually not bad’).

Haven’t posted any only because they haven’t fitted any topic (yet)!

Only shock is when the last song then becomes ‘Greetings to the New Brunette’ on my iTunes (Billie to Billy).
I mean, I was thinking blonde…

Now, will you be able to remember all that or will you need to get your mum on?

ha ha – thanks @arbutus and @scouttheairedale – yep, the trip to somewhere sunny and exotic was scuppered by booking ‘late’ (though for me I thought it was ages as it was 2 weeks ago! Seems Cuba has a different timeframe).

However, I’m lucky I can go on a holiday to some far clime, so will try somewhere else in a couple of weeks (after the school holiday hike in prices goes down). Others don’t have that luxury, so I shouldn’t grumble.

You’re all choosing more uplifting songs, but I will post something else which is tenderly romantic on this windy valentine’s*:

Okay, @whisht, I was singing around the kitchen to that one, and now you’ve got me started. “Stormy Weather” isn’t uplifting in a thematic sense, but it does fill me with well-being. I love everything about it; the winding melody and harmonic progressions are beautiful. I used to love to play this at the piano, so much fun.

There are so many classic singers doing this that it was hard to decide which version to choose. I wasn’t going to go with Ella, but then I found this gorgeous version with Joe Pass, very melodious and laid-back.

But I almost picked this wonderful bluesy version with the classic orchestra accompaniment.

I like Grapefruit Moon -some might consider it over-sweet, but it and many others form memories of my tweens. @arbutus -I think it was the Featured Singer -now, I’m utterly confused. @whisht – Thanks! I’m always worried about butting in to other’s conversations, in general, although I’m relieved that it doesn’t apply here. That’s good, because I’m a “big mouth” overall. 😉
And yes, I think I love this music thread most of all, because I love so many different types of music (my bookmarks and iTunes are brimming with different artists from all over the world and genres.) I’m so glad that you’ve enjoyed my posts thus far. And I’m so so sorry about your ruined plans for your holiday. That’s horrible and I hope things get sorted for you.

LOL! Nope, it’s not raining snowmen here either… However, if it did, I’m too afraid of snowmen now thanks to Doctor Who. I’d worry they were going to eat me and try to melt them with my thoughts. And I absolutely LOVE the Gene Kelly one! That’s also one of my favorites. I love the whole movie, to be honest.

Okay, enough is enough. I think that we have brought it on ourselves with all of this rain music. I have just spent two hours watching my son play soccer in what felt like a hurricane (we have played in heat, fog, freezing rain, sub-zero temperatures, and even a bit of snow, but never in pouring rain and high wind until now!); and now I am reading about more storms in the UK.

So enough rain dancing, how about a sunshine song? There are tons, and I offer you two:

@arbutus – Wow, that’s sounds awful. Before I moved to Minnesota, I lived in Philadelphia (was born there) and they often had “Nor’easter”s, high winds and tons of rain. However, games would be canceled during those times, due to flooding and falling trees. It’s the Nor’easter season right now on the east coast of the US, I’m in the colder part of the country, a thousand miles away, so we have lots of snow instead. I love your post of Katrina And The Waves! That song always gets me moving. 😀

It’s sad… I can’t think of any songs with “sunshine” in them, besides part of the old song, “Aquarius – Let The Sunshine In”:

@faegrl    Oh, I haven’t heard ELO in forever! I used to like them a lot. I have one of their LP’s, which gives you some idea of where my time stream started.  🙂   And yes, Walking on Sunshine is a goofily happy song, isn’t it?

Well, there wasn’t enough wind to blow down trees, only to freeze us all half to death, and enough rain to drown the poor players. We have a lot of artificial turf fields here now, and they don’t seem to cancel for anything less than six inches of snow, which we rarely get. (If you can’t see the lines, you can’t play, of course!) So we have played games in some of the stupidest weather imaginable. This morning it is sunny, but more rain and “damaging winds” are forecast for later today, so perhaps another sunshine song?

I hope the weather does clear up for Britain. I read that it’s getting pretty bad there.. it seems like the weather has gone crazy now. It’s not behaving properly anywhere on the globe. Minnesota usually gets cold, but we’ve had minus 28C to minus 31. Some parts reached minus 36. Right now, it’s 7C… which is “normal” weather for winter here… for now. It can drop at any second and usually does. Who says that global warming doesn’t exist? Right…

hi all – broadband’s down all weekend (grrrr) so using a dodgy wifi connection.

Can I just say, I was going to say something amusing about how all the “sun” music is getting me down (due to me wanting to be somewhere sunny!) but actually those were some great pieces from everyone above!

wow @arbutus – I know the song (different version) but Ella’s voice is such an instrument! I’m thinking of where its going after 3 mins or so. and yet such control, always in the service of the song rather than just showing off.

and @faegrl – some absolute crackers in there! I haven’t heard Aquarius for a long time! but “sunshine lollipops and rainbows”!!!! that’s the best 3mins of music I’ve heard in ages! and followed by something glorious like Rezonate (not a band/artist I’ve heard of). And great to know ‘dubstep’ isn’t just gloomy (though I liked) stuff like the Burial I’ve heard.

As a ping-pong I’d love to find something suitable but need to hear it again (and wifi letting me down!). But thanks again for great choons!

There was an Ella Fitzgerald posting of this ealier (@Arbutus), but Lena Horne also does a lovely version.

It’s worth repeating because it’s apposite to my distinctly damp life right now (that unending heavenly deluge), but also because a version of this is sung in our village’s Sleeping Beauty panto by Madame Mistletoe [aka the Dreadful Druid at the Royal Oak (‘but I’m only dreadful in the morning before my second cup of coffee’)].

@whisht – Yes, I have a very limited amount of songs in my mind about sunshine, that theme was hard for to come up with upbeat songs about it. I love the rain, so I have many songs on that subject in mind. The song from Rezonate (“Lonely”) doesn’t really fit in the theme, because it starts off with a rainy track, however it’s so pretty that I really wanted to share it with everyone here. I never heard of that group either, I just happened across them while browsing Youtube the other morning. 🙂

As for dubstep, I’m very new to that genre of music. I’m from the era of techno/trance, where the songs go “doof, doof, doof!”. Dubstep is a new sounds of “wah, wah, wah!”, so it’s interesting. And I feel OLD, because a lot of people much younger than me know dubstep well by now, I’m just discovering it since last spring.

ROTFL! Yes, I wasn’t speaking of those kind of suspenders, even though The Rocky Horror Picture Show is awesome. Too funny! :-p

@whisht   I agree, Ella’s singing is so deceptively simple. She has that lovely clear voice, and always lets the melody take centre stage. And my condolences on the broadband!

@ScoutTheAiredale   I’ve heard Lena’s version as well, and like it, too. The beauty of “Stormy Weather” is that the glorious, twisty-turny melody lends it self to so many interpretations. Best wishes for the performance, by the way. And what a great curtain call number, I can just see you all now!

@faegrl   That is brilliant. Just brilliant. The sight of all those guys in white shirts, dark ties, and fox hats simply did me in.  And I enjoyed the Rezonate piece too, by the way, very atmospheric. Like you, I have only recently become familiar with dubstep, as there is a class in my son’s music school that produces it, and we get to hear a lot of it at the performances. I haven’t always warmed to it, I confess, but that might be partly related to the volume at which they play it! But I enjoy some of the more musical ones. The line between music and noise is sometimes very wavy, and its placement depends on your point of view!

That’s a debate that’s actually been going on for centuries. Everyone from Beethoven to Buddy Holly has been accused of making noise not music, and it expands forward and backward from there. How about this, from 1955? Pierre Boulez was one of the big names in classical music at the time (everyone still has to study him in music history classes). It’s not altogether my personal cup of tea, but there are loads of classical music fans who swear by this kind of thing. It just goes to show you.  🙂  As you can tell, I find the noise vs. music discussion fascinating, in any genre!
