@blenkinsopthebrave Oh, dear. Well, I was hoping against hope. Having just watched the trailer, it does seem to do quite a bit of fan service. I was not watching the original series when it aired. So it will either work, or it won’t. I’ll just have to wait and see.

@blenkinsopthebrave   @nerys   and @janetteb    I  liked both seasons of Picard but then I am a Trekkie from way back and I rarely dislike any of it with a few exceptions of course. Just like Who there is always something I like in every episode. I am pretty easy to please. Give me Captain Picard and Q , throw in some Vulcans and the Borg and I am hooked. Maybe the next season will be something you like better but if not than there are so many things out there to watch and not enough time to watch them.

    beam me up

@winston My reaction comes from loving it so much the first season, and then feeling disappointed that it didn’t meet my expectations for the second. But I am glad you enjoyed it!

ooh, I’m intrigued by Avenue 5? It sounds like something that’s worth a watch. Should I plunge in?

@thane16    Hello!  Sorry it took so long to answer but life will interfere with my spare time. I hope you and the family are all well and enjoying your summer. We are having a bit of a snowstorm right now but we are tucked up inside so no big worries. Winter is coming…….

I liked Avenue 5, it is a space comedy with Hugh Laurie as the Captain of the ship. The comedy is light and sometimes silly or cheeky, just how I like it. I think you should give it a watch for some fun entertainment over the holidays. Real life is such a drag these days that escapism is my viewing goal this holiday season.

    Stay sane

@thane16 Hi. Hope the weather is being nice to you up in Brisbane. WE are finally getting some warm, spring weather and the jacarandas are in full bloom. My favourite time of year.

and @winston I liked AVenue5 too. Some of the humour was too ott for my taste but overall I enjoyed it and will certainly watch the next series. As Winston says we all need a little escapism and I like mine to be tinged with acute social commentary which is a given in anything penned by Armando Iannucci. there is also another series of Staged out now. I have yet to watch it but that is something to look forward to. David Tenant and Michael Sheen playing exaggerated versions of themselves!! And I just found out that there is going to be a Detectorists Christmas Special so lots of good viewing to look forward to and compensate for the lack of a Dr Who Christmas Special

On Who related news I have posted a podcast about the Tom Baker story, City of Death on the Cult TV Club thread. Hopefully this link works. (and does not take people to the wrong page.) We have fallen behind with our podcasts recently due to a combination of covid, holidays and just general stuff. Hopefully next year will be back to schedule.

    cheers

    Helloo my darlings…

    @janetteb @winston

i LOVED Staged! Huge fun. I don’t know Ave 5 but then most anything with Laurie is wonderful. As for Armando, big tick. One day, when I was still working, & home late, I opened the door to a series of hiccuping giggles  belonging to Thane, who at 13 had nicked my laptop & was watching The Thick Of It! I know:  terrible 😣 parenting.

No wonder when PeterC was announced as the new doctor, Thane crowed with delight. Mind you, he started watching The Crown because of Matt Smith.

His knowledge of that period of British History from the PMs: Eden, Macmillan & later, Thatcher was dreadful! Fortunately, he’s being well schooled.

now, do we have our Christmas telly shows lined up? We haven’t seen Scrooge in a while nor Polar Express.

@thane16 Ooh Christmas viewing line up. I just copied a few onto my laptop for the next few days, have just watched the Christmas episode of Goodnight Sweetheart, have the Christmas specials of Upstart Crow, and Hogfather on the list and one of the old BBC versions of A Christmas Carol. then the Dr Who Christmas Specials but hopefully will be watching those with the S/O at night.

Staged is a delight isn’t it. Can’t help but love everyone involved.

    Cheers

    Janette.

hey everyone 🙂 how are you all 🙂

Talking of Christmas has anyone seen the film – Christmas Angel 🙂 its pretty sweet, it felt like 2 or 3 hours and I missed a lot of it when I walked downstairs and stayed around but its like an hour and a half

Anyway its pretty sweet and Chrsitmasie but not like everything Christmas you know just learning to be kind, trust the path of life ect just think its a nice film and one of the kids in the film gets bullied but turns his life around in a way just doing good to others,

This reminded me of the post I made about helping the planet, doing something good even if its a little thing and I was thinking maybe at this Christmas time if we could get together and maybe like talk about any progress or anything nice in terms of that and like just normal lives being good to others anything good but also the struggles I might not make sense I just felt like needed to say something and maybe it helps people thats all I really want just to help others and in the big picture the planet if I can in some ways.

I just feel like that kid you know I was bullied a lot and I dont think I have many oppertunites in like the outside world to help right now, yes I try my best and try and help all my friends ect but in terms of the wider world its harder but still possible, that kid (I know its a film but the message) really felt like me what I wanted to just help people I dont want anything special for me or whatever just a nice life and someone nice and try and help others, I really hope I can spread out a bit when I have my own house ect can just go out and help others without family asking where I’m going ect ect that my goals when I have my own space just do more for the community ect and be more free.

I am not in school anymore, where I live is a bit unsettling like just wanna feel safe maybe if I was with my friends more I could help others, hopefully when I move to Portugal I am gonna fix my life and meet others help others ect get healthier as England is really setting me back job wise, health wise ect I could push to do these things now (I did like 100’s of sqwats everyday for couple months) but the life style is different out there I can fix soo much thats wrecking me and get my freedom not be scared to help others.

Why am I saying all this on the Sofa or well in this fourme I must sound like some sort of joyful crank just sucks how shut off England feels comparedd to how it was 20 40 ect years ago, nobody really speaks to their neighbours everything is shutting down oppertunies ect I dont wanna sound bad here but I really struggle with English girls now a days they seem soo fixated on possesion looking like beautfy 10/10’s you know and where is the heart, honeslty there are good people but just find it soo needle in a hay stack my friends know I know I just dont trust most English girls anymore which is why I am trying soo much online dating to broaden the horizons just everyone feels like wram you know so hopefully when I move thats a main goal I can turn around in Portugual as everyone is soo much kinder and just talks to you like natural nothing like hidden meanings ect soo done with that I could go on but dont step over a line, just someone kind is all I ask and yeah this has gone on a lot , just having tough times with family ect and when you see a good thing thats nice like that film and maybe like I say we could all keep doing something to help others but also sometimes we need to let others help us and reach out you know,

I think I’m gonna work on my Pokemon/Pokedex ideas it seems the only thing that cheers me up now a days, spent a whole 8 hours on gta online just to talk to a friend who I dont even think cares and has hurt me in the past but doesnt see it just cause I was alone and I got told off by my parents for being on the game for 8 hours what else can I do when I am alone playsataion is a chance to make new friends from everywhere but now I wont have that today, and this is the main place I go when alone or a good ideas ect so I am here today cause I am alone with family stressing me out but mainly messaged today cause that film touched me and through all the rambling and silly things I say hope at least that message is there just be nice keep being nice help others and you things are tougher and toufher in this modern world why should we be tougher on ourselves too make the most of the things that make you and others happy hope goodness comes your way and a good path of life 🙂

sorry for this being long, maybe silly and too much about me just take care and be good give help and love thats the main things 🙂

PS if anyone wants to message me well about anything, topics, how your day’s going, ideas to help people anything really just even to talk not to be alone thats all perfectly fine I’ll try and see your/the messages (re fresh the page from time to time) and if I can help any of you please let me know or if you have friends here ask them if thats more comfortable for you 🙂

take care everyone and have a Merry Christmas look for joy and be kind 🙂 who knows how much good you can all do 🙂 but any good is great 🙂

Oh Robert you mad evil person, I had an evil thought whilst I was in my personal forced regeneration cubicle aka the shower this morning. What if we’ve all been wrong about Neil Patrick’s role as the celestial Toymaker but he is in fact the Master now wouldn’t that be a turn up for the books. Now bear with me we know Deshwan Master was probably dying at the end of Power of the Doctor but what if because he force regenerated into a Jodie/Master has he has altered his own Timelord genetics into activating the timeless child like unlimited number of regeneration, though in theory the Master may have regenerations left. Those of us who remember the Tom Baker pre gap era will remember that the Master was likely given a new regeneration cycle in the Deadly Assassin Story when the Timelord council ordered his decaying appearance be fixed to ease their sensibilities of what a Timelord should look like. It wouldn’t surprise me if RTD has been doing one of his notorious lies to give us a major surprise in the 60th Anniversary Specials by letting us all assume that Neil is playing the Celestial ToyMaker. Now I wouldn’t expect him to continue the role long term and it would probably only be for the 3 specials with him regenerating again just as Tennant is regenerating into Gnuti’s Doctor.

@janetteb   We really liked The Detectorists and I had no idea about the Christmas special so thanks! It is a show that amuses and relaxes and everyone in it are mint. Staged is like that also.

I will probably watch one version of Scrooge maybe even Scrooged and the animated Grinch which I have watched since I was a child. We also have a list of movies we watch over the holidays like Goonies and Star Wars and other movies we watched when our kids were small and at home. Why do they grow up so fast?

@thane16   My youngest son watched Stephen Kings ” It ” when he was about 10 and had nightmares for weeks. This was the days of VCRs and he watched it with his older brother while I was at work. I still feel guilty and he still doesn’t like clowns and we are both still peeved with the 1st born son  and it happened so many years ago.

I always knew that my kids knew some bad words but tried to teach them to when not to use them. Never ask your Granny for a f#$king cookie!

    Stay merry.

@winston You are a card! (As me dear ma used to say).
“never ask granny for a fu**ing cookie” indeed.

yes, certain films may not be Christmas flicks, per se, but as memories with kids, it’s a great reminder. Two years ago Thane commanded: We. Are. All. Watching. Harry Potter. This. Christmas.

I thought “all? You mean 1 film, yes?” No, it was all films & actually, lovely fun. End 2020, during the Christmas week, we’d tramp upstairs to the A/C & DVD with snacks. The production quality & the score was terrific: though dear Alan Rickman didn’t like the accompanying score apparently.

I saw Alistair Sim in The Green Card yesterday (actually that title is wrong).  His voice is another of the more recognisable – to me, at least. Amazing what is freely available on certain platforms, with subtitles & reasonable sound/audio quality. Any film with snow & rain, when it’s broiling outside, is a good idea at New Year. Though, cross fingers, no more floods.

@winston golly, yes, “It” scared me too. And I’m alright around clowns. You didn’t do anything wrong. These things happen.

Thane stayed with a friend 3 years his senior so he saw the 4th Harry Potter at age 8 & spent the next YEAR yelling thru the wee hours, wanting night lights/ stair lights, when, from Year Zero he’d never had those additions.

Bed time was something he looked forward to so there were never complaints or delays.

    Boy, did that change! 🙂

@thane16 I agree with @winston‘s and @janetteb‘s assessments of Avenue 5. Overall, I enjoy it, though there are some slapsticky, over-the-top moments. But I find far more to like than to dislike. Hugh Laurie could recite the telephone book and make it entertaining!

Oh, and I love Staged! I wasn’t sure if the second season would measure up to the first, but in my opinion it did. David Tennant and Michael Sheen are so good together!

    syzygy @thane16

@nerys absolutely 👍 for Hugh. His voice -whether as the bloviating House or in an English role is worth a watch. I did see him in a British political thriller 2-3 years ago which was a disappointment, imho, but more to do with the occluded story line than anything Hugh-wise. 😀

@nerys and @thane16 I just watched the trailer for The Amazing Maurice which I am looking forward to having enjoyed the book by Pratchett. Maurice is voiced by Hugh Laurie. David Tennant also voices a character. (one of the rats) so this post isn’t entirely off topic.  🙂

    Cheers

@thane16 Was that Roadkill? I thought it started well, but didn’t quite come together. What became of the investigation into the journalist’s death? Was it an accident, or was she run down deliberately? I guess we’ll never know.

But, if nothing else, it was worth it to see Helen McCrory in her final role. She was magnificent, as always.

@nerys you have restored my memory! Yes, it was Roadkill.

McRory was wonderful. I remember her in Northsquare. Back in ‘98, I think.

@janetteb  Thanks for the heads up about The Amazing Maurice, I am a big fan of Pratchett and I look forward to this! David Tenant does a lot of voices in animated shows ( there I made the Doctor connection) and he can sound so different it takes me a bit to get the voice.

@thane16     Hello. I hope your holiday is going great!

    Clara Oswald @thetimelordwizard

Hi!  For some weird reason I want a fez for Christmas.  Does anyone know why?  Also the Celestial Toymaker FREAKS me out.  He’s BACK! AHHH! SAVE ME! My fave companion is Clara and I took a quiz and I’m HER!!!  YAY!!!! DAVID TENNANT IS BACK!!

@thetimelordwizard      Welcome and hello!  My son got me a fez for Xmas a couple of years ago and I highly recommend it. I wear it quite often, mostly  to annoy the mister but it is a snappy hat. I hope Santa brings you one.

    Stay merry
