I forgot most of what actually happened in these two episodes. Jack had sophisticated technology from the start, and Jack was also responsible for what happened in the episode because he dropped the vehicle with the nano bots that were unfamiliar with what a human is supposed to look like.
A good portion of the episodes were flirting, but it was refreshing to have the angle with Nancy where she was trying to scavenge for food for the children while families left their homes during the air raids. It should have been more clear than it was to me, but I also forgot that Nancy was actually the “mummy”.
After so many episodes where supporting characters died, it was refreshing to have one where everything was resolved and nobody was left in that horrifying state. Also the Sonic Blaster and tractor beam was pretty cool. For being a con man, Captain Jack did alright by Rose and the Doctor and saved them on a couple of occasions there, and it was nice to see them return the favor.

All the sonicky stuff between the Doctor and Captain Jack.11 August 2024 at 02:20 #76838@ps1l0v3you I felt stupid when I heard that the Doctor talking about how he could dance and had danced meant anything other than dancing. Of course it does, how did I miss it ? I enjoy this episode whenever I rewatch but the first time I was very creeped out by the kid in the gas mask and the repeating “Are you my Mummy?” followed by compassion for the “I want my Mummy”. Add to all that the appearance of Captain Jack and I guess I had no time to catch the innuendo.
I hope everything is good for you and yours. We are very busy here with the start of harvest time and putting new shingles on our roof. Work ,work, work!
stay safe
12 August 2024 at 00:46 #76839Careful on that roof!
What I liked, in hindsight, just in case the viewer still hadn’t got it, is Mickey meeting Captain Jack in Boom Town. ‘Is cheesy good or bad?’
Also, someone noted, the bit when Moonlight Serenade comes to an end and In The Mood strikes up… from waltz to swing! Truly, the Whovians are mere innocents to RTD and Moff.
Also the Squareness Gun and The Doctor’s sonic… is that a nod to Hollywood comedy where progressively bigger guns get pulled?
12 August 2024 at 01:59 #76840@ps1l0v3y0u Yay!! We (and when I say we I mean them) finished the roof today. I was grounded, literally, due to my leg but I “helped” from below. The mister and our #1 son did it over a couple of weekends trying to dodge the hottest days. Nice shiny new shingles.
Somehow when I watch Doctor Who I miss loads of stuff and that is why I like it here. This is where I find out what I missed from the more attentive Whovians and wonder how I didn’t “get it “.
Captain Jack is great and always good value. He was facing his death with a drink and good humour when the Doctor and Rose rescued him. Great introduction to a companion.
It is so quiet here, maybe they are watching the Olympics.

Not us. We have just finished re watching the first Matt Smith series and are now onto the second series, The Doctor’s Wife tonight. I always miss things on first watch too.
cheers

12 August 2024 at 06:29 #76842I just read @ps1l0v3y0u ‘s comment in the Website thread and now I get it. Innuendo. Yes. It goes with Captain Jack really. Captain Jack, talks in double entendre. (Most of which probably goes whooshing over my head too.)
Doctor Dances/Empty Child are classics. I think they are now old enough to have acquired that status. Nearly twenty years since Rose brought Who back to our screens. (I am keeping an eye on the date because the podcast I produce features tv from 20 years ago and before.)
I really should be using the quiet time to catch up on the most recent series threads, but RL has been hectic of late. If I am not busy then I am feeling guilty for not being busy. The weather is warming up too so I have been trying to do some gardening before it gets too hot. Possums have been wrecking havoc out there. it looks as though a Tardis has crash landed in one area. In fact overall our backyard resembles Amy’s overgrown garden.
Cheers

”Yes! Much bigger on the inside.”
And Rose’s reply/aside.
The Doctor’s Wife was fantastic. Michael Sheen, super voice ACTOR! And Uncle and Auntie. And the return of the Gallifreyan message boxes… last seen in The War Games.
Similar, but different, was Amy’s Choice with super creepy Toby Jones.
Best non-Moff story for each season anyone?

I am exactly the same. As I noted a long time ago in this thread, these two episodes are among my all-time favorites, and I think they really are what made me a Doctor Who fan. There was the eerie menace of the first part (but punctuated with that inimitable wit), followed by the Doctor’s unbridled elation in the second part. His joyful reaction made me feel such hope.
Being able to talk about that here with fellow Whovians, and also to tease out so many of the clues and storylines that often eluded me (especially in the Moffat era), are what I find so rewarding about this forum.
13 August 2024 at 03:14 #76846@janetteb The Doctor’s Wife is excellent! Such a wild combination of sheer terror experienced by Rory and Amy and the fun weirdness from Uncle and Auntie and the strange bitey lady who turns out to be the Tardis. Have fun.
@nerys That is what makes this site so good. The people are great. I agree with you about these 2 episodes, they are so good. The Doctors unbridled joy, throwing his arms up in the air and shouting “Everybody Lives!” I was hooked.
@ps1l0v3y0u You have set me a challenge because I never remember who wrote what although I do remember my favourite episodes in each series. So it looks like homework for me. I will get back to you.
13 August 2024 at 10:37 #76848@winston @janetteb The Doctor’s Wife is a favourite of mine, too. Just makes me wish Neil Gaiman had taken over as showrunner when the Moff retired.
Anyway, I’ve been very spasmodically working through the Chibz years, which is to say, just watching the episodes that really appeal to me, which amount to about three per season 🙂 Started watching Nikola Tesla’s Night of Terror but my geek side rebelled after about ten minutes (‘that’s wrong – and that – and that was someone else’) so I skipped on to Fugitive of the Judoon which was excellent, I’ve posted a comment in that echo.
And in between, re-watching The Prisoner, the Patrick McGoohan series. They still hold up pretty well, I think A, B or C is the best of the early eps.
So I think I’ll hie me off to the Winchester to take up ps1l0v3y0u’s implied challenge on ‘best non-Moff eps’.
