I love all the theories, and the fact that I expect none of them to be right, including my own.

But for what it’s worth I’m sticking with it: Clara is the Doctor. Quite possibly the eleventh.

“Who is Clara?” isn’t the question. It’s the answer, hidden in plain view:

    Q: “Doctor Who?”
    A: “Who is Clara.”

Not related to any grand unified theory, but there was another Mary Poppins reference this week: the laughing anti-gravity children.

    3rd time unlucky…?

A thought about the episode posters: there were comments about NiS being the only one that doesn’t show the Doctor and/or Clara. Are we absolutely sure that’s the case?!

Well spotted on the Gunslinger tattoo by the way. I knew there was something familiar but I couldn’t place it.

@thebadfairyprincess I’m with you on River having written the book.

The ‘other’ book – Summer Falls – I’ve only read the free first chapter, in which I assumed it was the story of Amy (not Clara) meeting the Doctor, with a picture of Amy and ‘her boys’ on the cover. Of course, the rest of the book probably contradicts that entirely! However, I’d be surprised if there were ‘true’ hints about this season in the book – that doesn’t strike me as how the BBC/Moffat would work.

Surely how Moffat would work, though, is to throw in very deliberate red herrings… Twice in the last 2 episodes the Doctor has given ‘explanations’ of whatever the current space/time problem is using metaphors that only barely make sense: blue/red balloons, then flickering lights. Surely that’s just forum-baiting behaviour!!

(Stephen Thompson’s other episode – CotBS which I controversially quite enjoyed – also contains 2 universes in the same place at the same time that flicker in and out of contact with each other. Not relevant, I just thought it was interesting.)

@bluesqueakpip I love your TARDIS behaviour list, especially her choice in Hide to let Clara in only once Emma’s opened the portal. Makes sense of some interesting editing and some interesting theories!

Hey everyone, if you want @dr-clara ‘s name to go “live” it needs a dash between Dr and Clara…

Thank you! I’ve regenerated and added a dash. [A dash of what, though?]

And thanks for adding the ‘sliver of ice’ to that theory. I think Clara as the other half of the Doctor’s whole is my preferred version (of my own theory!) so that fits very nicely.

But when did one become two? And does the ‘flying the tardis for 900 years’ when we know he’s older mean that it was a long time ago, or has that been satisfactorily answered upstream in this thread? @bobbingbird mentioned the lost 3 months in Impossible Astronaut / DotM, and we know the Doctor went AWOL for 200 years so if it was in that gap wouldn’t this Doctor be under 1,000 again?

Hmmm. Actually I don’t like that. It feels like if Moffat hid something that big he’d have done it either more recently or less recently – and TIA/DotM was complicated enough without this too!

Another hint that Clara is the Doctor: the TARDIS presented her with the image of the person she most esteemed and we know (Impossible Astronaut again) that the Doctor is the person he trusts most in the universe.

And following that thought a bit further I’m cogitating [word of the week, thanks @jimthefish] on the Doctor’s room in The God Complex and the recent cloister bells. More Hmmm.

Long-time lurker here, signed up to post this…

    @whohar

1b. Clara is the next regen of the Doctor.
1f. Clara is a construct of the Doctor sent to save himself as he loses his memories.

New bonkers theory somewhere between b and f:

    1n. Clara is the Doctor.

Not the next regeneration but a different regeneration after Ten (or a regeneration of a different Ten due to multiple universes or multiple Doctors), meaning both JLC and Smith are Eleven.

Or… have there been any references to the Doctor’s two hearts recently? Could he have created a ‘construct to save himself’ using one of his hearts, and would that make both of them the same person? That might account for her empathy, and him as a ‘Dark Doctor’, and be signalled by all the red(/blue), but doesn’t help with so many other things! (Although it does call back to AotD: “What do you call someone who’s…”, “I see what you did there”.)

Or… taking it too far… the Doctor is the construct and Clara is the real Doctor but doesn’t know it at the moment for some reason. Definitely bonkers.
