I’ve been following the discussion here and enjoying the discussion and debate. As to the choice of actor/actress for the next Doctor, I don’t have any particular choices or ideas. Not being from the UK, I don’t quite know actors who are not very popular or known beyond the shores. And I do hope the next Doctor is someone who is relatively unknown.

As to the Doctor’s gender, I just wanted to put my two cents in. I do think the Doctor is pan-sexual and I like that idea. As a woman I do rather have a soft corner for male doctors, this is a blurry line since I fancy Smith. But I am quite prepared to have a female Doctor. It’s kind of in canon that this sort of a regeneration is possible and I think it would be exciting to see what can happen with this.

My major concern is, as someone upthread pointed out, how the actress playing the Doctor would be able to distinguish herself from River. I do think it’s possible, but it will be a huge task for whoever the actress might be.

The other thing I just wanted to chime in about was ‘women in sci-fi’. One of the programs to really address this in the best way possible I think was ‘Battlestar Galactica’. They did this brilliant thing that a lot of people forget to do, treat women like people. They successfully changed two very popular male roles into female and didn’t address it with any fuss, but just created these really strong characters who just happened to be women.

The president in Battlestar Galactica is actually my favorite female character in a sci-fi universe. The women in BSG are in turns heroic, cowardly, weak, strong, flawed and just people. The best kind of story-telling in my opinion.

Doctor Who has some great women in it too. And some great men who are also gender-bending in their own way (Jack is pan-sexual, Rory is in a typically female job and is the more nurturing of the couple). I don’t think the team are particularly shrugging their duties of dealing with gender in sci-fi. But they are so high-profile and dealing with a commodity that is pretty much a national treasure for a country, so I guess they are reluctant to push the envelope in directions that might alienate some of the audience.

I’m actually looking fwd to JLC next season (I personally don’t think she’ll be the next Doctor), but I really want to see how they develop her, now that she is the Doctor’s savior of sorts. I think that’s pretty exciting. I’ve never heard of Rory Kinnear. But I have faith 🙂

Oh dear, I just went teary hearing about Matt leaving. I am definitely just a ‘New Who’ fan, and I loved Tennant and Eccles, but Matt became “my” Doctor. I think he will always be that. But I agree that it seems like a natural end for Eleven. His story arcs were very tied up with the Ponds and I don’t think he would ever be able to shake that. JLC and the Paternoster Gang helped, but it does seem like they are a great transition tool for the next Doctor.

I would love to see Helen Mirren cast as the Doctor, though I doubt she would have time for such an all consuming role. I trust Moffat and Gatiss with casting though. They’ve done some perfect work even with the guest stars on DW and of course Sherlock.

I’m looking forward to the 50th and will now gather many handkerchiefs for the Christmas special. I’m definitely going to be bawling on that one.

Well! Matt Smith was sooo good! I think this seals it. Eleven is my favorite Doctor. I think I may stop lurking until after the finale tho. Even here, tho you guys have been excellent about avoiding spoilers. I know that a couple of you have been spoiled by a BBC trail for next week. And am guessing your bonkers theorising will be a tad affected by that. Am trying to go for a complete blind entry into next week (tho I did watch “She said, He said”.

You guys are awesome tho, and I’ll do a lot of retroactive trawling through comments when the series is done. Have fun!

@whohar I haven’t yet been able to come up with my own, but am so totally enjoying all the speculation here. This just adds another layer of enjoyment to the process.

@lula yup, I’m on EST too. John Barrowman and Alex Kingston together definitely merits a watch, will try and catch it somewhere. The other show that does nods (albeit really subtle) to Doctor Who is Supernatural. Which is just really fluffy, fun TV. I love those brothers! I wonder if SPN forums have people complaining about DEMs tho? Cos, that’s pretty much how that show operates, with literal gods too 🙂

I’ve been lurking since Saturday and thoroughly enjoying myself! I love the bonkers theories, I just haven”t had much to contribute to them.

I am on-board with Clara as Susan tho. I haven’t watched any Classic Who, but Susan does seem to be a really tantalising loose end, especially for Moffat. I agree that children in some form or the other have been on his mind and might culminate with having Susan back.

I also think the 50th will in some form or the other address the Time War. Either by giving us an insight into the Doctor’s role or by resolving it altogether and having the Time Lords make a come back.

I am a bit concerned that Clara will now be meeting Madame Vastra, Jenny and Strax. Like I think @timeloop mentioned, how will they handle it? The Doctor will need to do some quick explaining to cover that up.

Harking all the way back to Saturday tho, that was such a cracking episode! I really love Smith, he is just such fun as the Doctor. I was just gawking at the TARDIS interior and it took a re-watch or two to really get it.

I really liked the initial theories suggesting that the exploding TARDII are tied up with the others. But now I’m loving the idea of @haveyoufedthefish and @adaraith had about this being 1’s TARDIS, and 11 somehow ending up giving it to him! That would be sufficiently time-wimey and such a lot of fun to show on film.

Just wanted to drop a line in saying that I really like this space :), the Guardian is a scary place sometimes. I’m a born lurker, but at least I feel ok enough to say something here from time to time. There, I wouldn’t dare!

@phaseshift – Those Amy promos were terrible! But thankfully no Clara explanations or intros. They’re doing better with the programming overall too. More or less owning Doctor Who as their marquee attraction. I do get reports that due to commercials BBCAmerica can do some creative editing of the show. And that bothers me just a little. I would rather watch it exactly how the Moff intends it to be seen.

 

@lula – I love Atlanta! I’m originally from Bombay, and have been in Atlanta since 2008, but been in the States since 2005. I really like this city (it got voted nerdiest city in the US! that’s a good clue for why I feel like I fit in). I hear they have some decent Doctor Who panels at Dragon Con, but I haven’t been yet. Maybe this year!

I also spent a chunk of my childhood in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, which is one of the reasons am a rabid Anglophile and am eating chocolate digestives with tea right now.

@scaryb – I’ll be nice to the fishies! I promise. I kind of like them.

@badwolf99 – I agree with you. Americans generally look up to the beeb for quality programming. There’s usually an undercurrent of admiration for many shows. Right now tho I think both the UK and the US are having some great TV moments. US TV is having some kind of golden age, with great shows like Breaking Bad (greatest drama ever for me, though I haven’t watched the Wire), Mad Men, GoT, etc. Even in the UK, I love the Hour, Doctor Who, Sherlock, Call the Midwife! It’s really just a great time to love watching TV 🙂

@Shazzbot – It’s always great to find fellow US fans! I’ve been learning quite a bit about Classic Who through just reading these guy’s comments on the Guardian blog and some trips to the TARDIS wiki.

About Rory, I think I have a case of mixing my Arthur/Rory feelings a bit. I like the character’s basic qualities of loyalty and doggedness. And he can be bad-ass too! I think I felt a twinge of pain each time he died! Even though I knew it was almost definitely temporary.

I do think he takes a lot of crap from Amy, but her crap is mostly superficial and I think the show did a pretty good job of letting us know how deep the feelings really run on both sides (I like the whole joshing, snarky vibe a bit better than a lovey-dovey vibe anyway). Also, have you seen running Rory!!? Those flailing arms are precious!

@juniperfish– That’s my cat in the avatar! Her name is Bo. And she owns me. Btw, just wanted to mention that your bowtie theory is my favorite! I really wish Moffat actually would let something that clever and complex play out. It’s a pleasure to cogitate on such theories!

Hello. I’ve been lurking around the Guardian blog comments since the last series and just wanted to pop in and say hi!

You guys are not only really dedicated fans, but take so much joy in the show that it’s just a lot of fun to read.

I haven’t seen any Classic Who, so my perspective is all Nu-Who, but I do love it so!

Anyway hi from Atlanta, GA! I’ll be lurking here too, and hopefully speaking up a bit now and then. Especially to declare my undying love for Rory and my fascination with Clara.
