‘Of course it all fits together. We make sure it does’

    Purofilion… that’s exactly my point.

It would take an impossible number of man hours to keep all those plates spinning, an costly too.

Writers write stories; they aren’t expected to be historians of the Dr Who, though granted, perhaps Mr. Moffet is able to cram his head full with min…[Read more]

They’re far too complacent about their successes

  • Oblique replied to the topic Listen

The trouble with the writing is exactly that geoffers: ‘they do throw in too much stuff, just for effect here and there.’ And yes, they are professional writers and they should be making every minute count in the time they have to tell the tale.

  • Sapphire & Steel …. just lovely. They arrive – they go, with lots of surreal and usually scary moments in between.

  • Oblique replied to the topic Listen

    Nice humour. Nothing laboured.

I don’t know the sequence in which the episodes were shot, but I think we saw Peter’s Doctor getting into his stride in this one. Dr Who has always done scary, very well. The first half of the Listen played like a Tennant story.

Surely nobody really believes that the people who pen these stories really sit down and work out how it all fits together?

  • Oblique replied to the topic Into the Dalek

The reveal of the Daleks in stories has always exciting, whether we know they’re coming on not.

However, Into the Dalek dispenses completely with anticipation. And anticipation is something Dr Who doesn’t do any more: there isn’t time! There’s a story to tell.

There was no build-up; no sudden reveal this time around. It was almost a thro…[Read more]

    Jokey Sontaran?

A far cry from the malevolence of Linx and Styre

  • Oblique replied to the topic Deep Breath

I would have appreciated Deep Breath opening with the combustion of a victim, with Vastra investigating: cue the Doctor.

I didn’t appreciate the dinosaur, but then again I’m not 7.

A longer episode that did nothing to enhance the story.

Awful reworking of the theme; there was a time when it sent a tingle down my spine; how times change.

    The i…[Read more]

Thank goodness writer, Mark Gatiss has pointed out the over-use of the sonic screwdriver.

If only the Doctor would use this device less frequently. Its been his ‘get out of jail free card’ for far too many years, and an excuse to create situations that can only be resolved within the confines of each episode.

The liberal use of this devise is pu…[Read more]

Nice moral to this end of this tale.

I suggest reference points for Robot of Sherwood: The Time Warrior and State of Decay.

I thought the Anthony Ainley MkII made a good sheriff.

  • Oblique replied to the topic Robot of Sherwood

Once upon a time… there was a lot of criticism levelled at the show, in the days of JNT.  I’m not sure – pantomime, whilst meant as a compliment, is one that Mr Gatiss would fully appreciate.

  • Oblique replied to the topic The Faces of the Doctor

My favourite Doctor has to be the one I grew up with. As I matured I began to appreciate different aspects of each incarnation.  I have preferences for different versions of the Doctor at different times. Its probably a mix of nostalgia for particular eras that influences these choices.

For me Tom Baker is the definitive doctor. I remember; as…[Read more]

There’s a  nostalgia having an older man at the controls. They’ve been getting much younger of late; rather like policemen. Mr. Capaldi, I hope, will bring a degree of gravitas back to the show.

Ps – thank you, mightbesherlock, and  pendant for your responses to my post, well argued btw.

In reply to mightbesherlock’s post: Continuity reference points are there for fans. They have become more prominent in recent years, I think. The writers have to tick quite a lot of boxes when writing scripts, and its worth considering the demographic they have to pen for. Doctor Who is peak-time viewing on a Saturday evening: – challenging;…[Read more]
