You really do have to love the Mail. Normally Privatisation = Good, so it must have caused them a brain haemorrhage to print that story in an effort to write yet another complaint about the Beeb.

It’s palpable arse gravy anyway – BBC in-house drama gets it’s own identity, the ability to increase productions to other broadcasters (Cardiff should do pretty well) and Doctor Who will remain in-house (Hall was talking about new commissions and expanding the range of external production units to stuff like documentaries). It does offer the tantalising prospect of BBC Worldwide (and its subs) commissioning new progs directly in the UK based on commercial interest, which they have had difficulty with in the past.

The Mail – I wouldn’t read it. Even in the event that I couldn’t afford a real comic.

No criticism of you @wolfweed. I’m glad you trawl the shallow end of the journalistic gene-pool instead of me! 😀 It’s good to know where the latest rant is going to come from. It’s an invaluable service for which I’m determined to buy you a beer for at some point.

Someone made the point on radio when I was travelling that it was an astute move within the BBC. Having it as a separate entity may mean earnings from overseas sales can be earmarked by department (for the first time), and that the Worldwide operation could theoretically commission material in the UK on behalf of BBC America.

My reading of it is that it would allow Worldwide/BBC America to fund speculative projects in the UK using British talent for the first time (rather than being a minor co-producer), which can only be a good thing. Now – how about that Paternoster Gang spin-off. 😀

Preview or simulcast showings of the first episode in cinemas, do we reckon?

@phaseshift and @fatmaninabox – Birmingham isn’t on the World Tour list, but the Beeb might well respond to the leak of the rough cut by running some fan-event previews. If they know they’ve got a great opening episode it would be an excellent way of shifting word-of-mouth in their favour.

@scaryb would know more than I would if that’s a likely response to the leaks of unfinished material.

It could also be another simulcast – since the 50th Simulcast was such a massive success in terms of tickets sold, they could be trying to test the waters and see if Who has got a general cinema audience – at least for the ‘big-ticket’ stuff like ‘new Doctor’.

The Electric Cinema is known for showing mainly independent, foreign language and classic movies (though they do occasionally show ‘mainstream’ movies) so my initial thoughts earlier in the week were that maybe they were going to show the Peter Cushing movies. However this ’embargo’ does make it sound like a screening of Episode 8.1.

I’m keeping my fingers, toes and eyes crossed 🙂

It was my immediate thought too on the simulcast/preview idea. Earlier this year in one of the Media expos the G’ covered (sorry, just searched for the link and can’t find it) there was a mention that one of the hot ticket events was a presentation by BBC Worldwide on how they did the digital distribution deal with the Cinemas, etc. Apparently there was a hell of a lot of interest from big names in TV on some of the lessons learned/promotion and the studies on viewers who are prepared to pay extra to make it a communal event.

I’m sure @bluesqueakpip is right in that event TV like a new Doctor – making it an equivalent of a double parter and have a simulcast may become the norm. This would be the test to see if there is an ongoing market or if everyone was just a little bit giddy with the 50th. Equally, I think we’ll probably see a few other franchises dip their toes into this kind of thing (but maybe more regionally).

Apparently it was exactly 10 years ago today that Mr Eccleston and co went into the BBC studios to start filming Dr Who again for the first time for over 15 years. Oh my giddy aunt  indeed! 10 YEARS!! How’d that happen? 😯

@bluesqueakpip I don’t know if it’s a likely response but another cinema simulcast is a bloody brilliant idea! I know the 50th went a lot better than they’d even dare hope, breaking records all over the place and more than holding its own against big budget mainstream movies.

@jimthefish you’re probably right – there’s sure to be a lot of film co execs wetting their breeks at the thought of those numbers and a fanbase that will happily pay to watch in the cinema when they could see it on TV.  I like the quirkiness of going to the cinema to watch a TV episode tho!

Of course, we are a polite forum, that believes in tolerance, diversity, civility and protection against spoilers, but, well, if they do not respond, then, in the words of Arnold Rimmer:

Call it extreme if you like, but I propose we hit it hard and hit it fast with a major – and I mean major – leaflet campaign, and while it’s reeling from that we’d follow up with a whist drive, a car boot sale, some street theatre and possibly even some benefit concerts.

@janetteb in my family, my son and I are it: I swear most of my friends don’t care at all about the Doctor (and he’s saved their lives so many times, but like our Craig is a modest person) so we’ll be sitting down together with our Baker scarves and hot chocolate from the Dr Who Mugs (last Christmas) and actually…it sounds pretty …pathetic…but it won’t be!! Good luck to all who have entered the draws. One thing I’d ask is that if anyone is lucky enough to go, would they consider writing it up for us in the blog format? Don’t worry about all the tech aspects, just the text would be fine and we can make it look all pretty for you.

Main reason is, as with all these things, producing “content” (and good content/coverage) may enable us to get more invites/access to this sort of thing which can be shared out.

Oh – and one for @wafflebro who signed in from South Korea to ask about the small venue they’d been give. People power sees it increase to a 1000 seater, so good for them.

Talking of cinema showings, the BBC Annual Report is out.

As usual, that means a lot of articles in the press about how the Beeb must do this, that, the other, the hokey-cockey, or be disbanded.

In it, Doctor Who gets quite a few mentions from Director General downwards in a “oh and by the way, did we mention Day of the Doctor? Take that you forces of Darkness!” way.

Doctor Who news summarises the fun facts n’ figures for DotD as reported. All in all, pretty staggering, and clearly demonstrating SM / the BBC is/are ruining the show and have no confidence in the project. It’s doomed.

In Bang per buck (spent v. return) one show edged ahead of the good Doctor. This must be bad news for SM, clearly, as it was Sherlock Series 3. Which shows that SM should be evicted from his office, tarred, feathered, etc, because, well, stuff.

Late last week, syndicated network Retro TV announced that here in the U.S., almost 500 episodes of Classic Doctor Who will beginning running regularly, spanning all the way from William Hartnell’s first episode, “An Unearthly Child,” to the final Sylvester McCoy episode, part 3 of “Survival.” That’s 26 years’ worth of Time Lord action for you to enjoy, all on a daily basis beginning this summer.”

 

So if you have a Retro TV affiliate in your area (Witch I HAD until it turned into an Independent) starting August 4, you can watch classic Who.
