The other thing that’s been crossing my mind today is that one word clue ‘paintings’. Two things came to mind initially. One is Vincent and his exploding TARDIS piece. The other was the weird portrait in Craig’s hall in The Lodger. Or am I veering into the realms of bonkers?
17 March 2013 at 08:48 #3227Whether Matt is staying or going, (and I’m still hoping it will be the former) they are certainly dangling the possibility of his leaving to keep us fans guessing. I suspect that his being in the Christmas Special indicates staying. I don’t think he would regenerate on Christmas Day. What kind of Christmas pressie would that be?? It appears that the “Fall of the eleventh” occurs in the Anniversary special or maybe it is avoided and they are fueling the dicussion just to generate suspense.
The final scene in the trailor was of the Doctor in a forest resembling a shelled forest of 1914-18. The forest of Tranzilor?? Moffat may have been planning the 50th special for several years and leading up it ever since he took over in which case the story could be written with alternate endings, the eleventh falls or is saved.

Good points, but here’s a couple of bonkers-ish thoughts–
1. The Anniversary and the Christmas Special are a two-parter and that Matt is in both as a ‘past’ Doctor.
2. Matt did say in the interview ‘shoot’ the Christmas Special. Given his ambitions as a director, could it be that his ‘leaving present’ is to get to direct an episode?
3. Him being in the Xmas ep is a big ol’ lie. Wouldn’t be the first time we’d had that scenario. ‘Someone definitely dies on that beach’ bollocks for instance. (Although I’m wondering if we won’t actually be back on Lake Silencio at some point).
4. He is staying after all. Although, interestingly, Jenna-Louise has confirmed that she is staying on for season eight, but there’s been so such pronouncement from Mr Matt. Mind you, the Fall of the Eleventh could mean nothing more than he trips up and gets back up again perfectly unharmed. I wouldn’t put it past Moffatt.
5. Something’s certainly going on, with the amount of intense secrecy and coyness that’s in the air at the moment. I suspect that we might even get a movie announcement this year.
@phaseshift, @juniperfish et al … re. lost scripts. I wasn’t aware that they’d given the Masters of Luxor the audio treatment. And the cynic in me disputes that they’ve just been ‘found’. What, coincidentally in the anniversary year? Just three weeks before the show is about to be back on our screens? I reckon Mr Onion (can that really be his name?) has been sitting on these for a while.

I’m wondering if Lake Silencio will turn out to be where ‘The Doctor’ died – and we’re now travelling towards the point when ‘Doctor Who’ is reborn.
They were really, really specific about placing the date-of-death as Good Friday 2012. And they seem to be equally firm about starting Season 7 pt 2 on Easter Saturday 2013. And then there’s all those bloody eggs…

Interestingly, the first one ties in with all the theories of Clara being ‘in the machine’ and all the shots from inside computer screens in the first few episodes of the series.

I must admit the ones that immediately grab my attention are the fantasy “Rings of Akhaten” and Gothic Horror “Hide”. (both by Cross). Be intriguing to see what the results are like.
Although, is it just me, or does Matt look like he’s about to launch into an impersonation of Elvis in the “Rings…” poster?
Interesting thoughts by @jimthefish and @bluesqueakpip, and I’ve got a few thoughts on this next series that I may try to put on the speculation thread later, but putting my chips down at the roulette table, I agree with @janetteb that Matt will continue into 2014.
I think the last episode of this run will end on a dramatic note and lead into the special, and think that episode and the special will form the basis for the limited theatrical run they are doing (so a 1hr 40 minute “film”). In the interview with SM Craig posted a while back on this thread he seemed to be very familiar (even a little weary) with the challenges of 3D filming and post production before any footage had been shot. 🙂
Keep cracking on to diminish that workload – we’ll expect you back in full bonkers mode in a couple of weeks!

The 50th anniversary special, due to begin filming in April, will be broadcast in 3D around the show’s birthday in November.
Around? Is it a two parter?
That would certainly make sense of the proposed plans for a cinema screening – a two parter would be film length.

But at least the posters are great. I instantly thought of Struzan’s work on Raiders when I saw the Akhaten one. As an homage it’s a good one (unless it’s actually by him, would love to find out).
I’ve managed to find large versions so have made them clickable links now, if you want to use for a wallpaper or something.
18 March 2013 at 18:51 #3285I came across another interview with Moffat. Haven’t listened to it yet – ironically, no time! It IS 85 minutes long after all. But supposedly he does say that River will be back, there will be more about Trenzalor, and discusses the possibility of a female doctor.

18 March 2013 at 20:18 #3287@craig — according to Struzan’s book of a couple of years back, he’s now retired having become disillusioned by the way studios were opting for Photoshop mock-ups rather than original paintings for their posters. It would be nice if the Beeb had tempted him out of retirement for ‘one last job’…

Comic Relief (poor sketch – pass me the memory worm), new trailers (BBC America version too, also the TARDIS in that BBC ‘where next’ ad), Matt on J Ross & Chris Evans & yesterday Warwick Davis on Titchmarsh (tight lipped) & the Dr Who site revealed a lot! Who else supposes that The Whispermen are those chaps in top hats, whilst The Vigil is that vile thing in the woods?
Lots of complaints about the new 6.10pm time slot but do we really want Who up against the Cowell channel’s prime slot show? Saturday Night Takeaway (& whatever replaces it) = pretty poor but probably popular. Remember when the enemy was Corrie & what that did to help our favourite show?
Back to that Comic Relief sketch – I reject it as canon – mostly coz it was bad (Funny as I do consider the NTA skit as canon – mostly coz it was good – Dot Cotton is real!). If you caught the Sunday edit though it was better as the awful rumpy-pumpy jokes were removed.

21 March 2013 at 03:56 #3335I can imagine Moffatt behaving like that, if he felt that the integrity of Who was in some way being threatened. (I am a bit naive too. I would only attribute such behaviour to the noble of motives.) Moffatt is passionate about his work and rather precious about it too I suspect so I understand how feelings might get heated. There is however, no doubt, a lot of journalistic exaggeration involved too if indeed there is any truth in the report at all.

21 March 2013 at 10:40 #3339The huge shouting match was seen by quite a few people, but nobody seems to know what it was actually about. Or rather, there are so many different versions of what it was about, it’s pretty obvious no one really knows.
If you look at the number of jokes about Amy’s temper and Scottishness, it’s a reasonable supposition that Steven Moffat might be basing it on his own short fuse…

And being of the Scottish persuasion myself, I’ve also no doubt that Moffatt probably has a bit of a short fuse. It’s just the phrase ‘you are erased from Doctor Who’ that strikes me as so odd as to be unlikely. He might as well have shouted ‘delete delete delete’.

Maybe Ian Hislop is more of an RTD fan?

One is an article by Peter Jackson, who reveals his price to direct an episode of Who.

You do get the impression that there’s some kind of dislike there: the PE stories are consistently negative – and the innuendo in the last sentence of the article is very much ‘Street of Shame’ stuff.

He’s one of those kings of nostalgia, isn’t he, with his programmes about steam trains and such. I suspect that he thinks Who has been going downhill since that new-fangled colour was brought in with Pertwee…

Looks like River will be back, but I think we already knew that.
He also says that the special will be ‘forward looking’ rather than a ‘fan-fest’.
But I’m finding it interesting that with filming on the special about to start that there’s been absolutely no word on guest stars and that’s usually something they’re very keen to get out there. It makes me think that a large chunk of the casting will be taken up by familiar faces. If you know what I mean…

And it seems destiny will be some sort of theme but, of course, that may be controlled destiny, a bit like the TARDIS taking the Doctor where he needed to go.

If this is the original Clara Oswald, and the fracturing comes later, she’s got memories of her original self – which the Victorian version didn’t seem to. The Victorian version also has a native Cockney accent (she reverts to it under stress) while the modern young Clara has a native Lancashire accent (presumably in case Jenna-Louise Coleman reverts to it under stress 🙂 )
I’d say the swing and the meeting as a child is deliberate shades of Amelia Pond.
23 March 2013 at 14:35 #3469I just watched it again and it made me laugh out loud at how stupid I was the first time I watched. This is not a Doctor looking for someone, this is a Doctor who has found someone – he’s just a bit early.
All the ambiguity in the dialogue is Moffat playing with us. At the end the Doctor is smiling, clicking his heels and jumps off the swing. He’s found Clara! 😀

23 March 2013 at 15:00 #3473@bluesqueakpip Good point re Victorian Clara, but we didn’t really find out very much about her background – there were people who knew her Cockney self, but not a suggestion of any long term friends, she seems quite isolated. Remember that episode also contained various time anomalies/anachronisms eg the newspaper.
re Clara mentioning her mum in Asylum – could be this mum she’s remembering, but we don’t know how long it is since she’s seen her mum. Her memories are her barricade against acknowledging the reality of being dalekised. Her mind is pulling on whatever it can find to keep those defences up eg her back story (of being the junior ents officer on a starship) isn’t independently established.
Gotta love a swing 🙂 They can so easily turn out to be trans-dimensional portals, if only you could swing high enough and fast enough. (I never quite managed it!!!)
He does have a habit of finding his companions young then dipping into their lives to make sure they remember him later!! Yah boo sucks to PCness

Not much to go on admittedly, but I’ve watched it twice – once without any expectations and then, after reading @craig‘s post, with a more considered view. Hmmm, I think you must be right @craig. It is an echo of the meeting with little Amelia but this time it is he who has to wait.
Plus having another kiddie (who I must admit isn’t a patch on little Amelia), targets it at the children in the audience.

The meeting is neither destiny or coincidence which suggests to me that in some way it is future Doctor who splits Clara and sends part of her across time and space, (maybe a little too Bad Wolf) to help him or warn him. The are a lot of mother and daughter references, the woman who sends him to Skaro is looking for her daughter, Clara in AOTD is talking ot her mother and in this short we see her with her mother. In the Christmas special she was a nanny governess taking the place of an absent mother.
bonkers bonkers theory, Clara is the daughter of River Song and the Doctor has to hide her by sending her through the universe. Don’t think this has any merit though for many reasons. I suspect that the “marriage” will remain deliberately ambigious and they wouldn’t have her snogging the Dr if she was his daughter. More likely Clara is somehow the child of the Tardis hence her, It’s smaller on the outside”. She has an intuitive knowledge of the inside. In a timey wimey way she might have been splintered through time at different ages or as an infant in each age.

They are a wonderful bunch aren’t they? I think it’s confirmed they appear in at least one episode in the next batch, but I was thinking more about the future following this piece:
It doesn’t really add much to the sum of whodom knowledge (I think most people have speculated as much), but I think it’s the first time I’ve read Moff officially saying he is nearer the end than the beginning.
I think if the popularity of the Paternoster Gang continues, the BBC (or Worldwide) would have to be mad not to do something with them. With the pressure of Who off, perhaps a punt at a limited spinoff – 6 episodes or 3 Sherlock type 1½ hrs? You could have incredible fun with a steampunk Victorian era playing on the literature of the time. Battles on Cavorite powered airships (yes – I’ve read “League of Extraordinary Gentlemen”) or a play on “Journey to the Centre of the Earth”. Jago and Lightfoot are still going great guns with their audio spinoff from “Talons of Weng Chiang”. A crossover on screen? I’d buy that.
I think I’d just be tempted to play them as they are in Who, rather than a supposed adult version as Torchwood was pitched. Make it a big adventure. Having two cross-species lesbians, and a unisex alien who gets confused at two individual sexes just makes it funnier!
