Not news as such … nothing new contained within it whatsoever, but still a nice little interview with Matt Smith…

I think this is the 5th clip from the Bells episode now ‘leaked’ (I’m starting to lose count) – this one officially by the Beeb…

    Whisht @whisht

thanks @phaseshift – I really do like those short videos of Strax et al. The Christmas ones were especially good (there seemed a good dynamic between them – and Strax just has the best lines….)
    “Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer…”
Is it because he wrote them…?

Anyway, I agree they should play it as close to Who as possible – lurching into Torchwood territory would be a mistake, mainly as the sense of fun would be lost.

I’m surprised no one is ranting about the JNT/Gary Downie ‘exclusives’ in the news yesterday & how the tabloids handled it. The Mirror had Colin Baker on the cover with DR WHO SEX SCANDAL emblazoned on it (& in tiny print – colin baker who is not involved). Scores of folk on their web article declared their hope that Colin will sue…(bloody right).

Also today’s Radio Times ep guide gives us the Gaiman ep title *(Nightmare in Silver)* and reveals stuff about the Vigil & the Whispermen (mostly which is which & when). Go & buy a copy if you can…

“Monks are not cool” – so is that a shout-out to A Good Man Goes To War – or to the First Doctor’s adventures with the Meddling Monk?

    wolfweed @wolfweed

Perhaps it’s about Tom Baker & Sylvester McCoy too, who both abandoned the Monastic life…

    #3605
    Bluesqueakpip @bluesqueakpip

Tom Baker abandoned the monastic life. Sylvester McCoy spent some years at a Junior Seminary – not quite the same thing; essentially he attended a Catholic Grammar School (Blairs in Aberdeen) for boys who were thinking of the priesthood.

You’ll find an awful lot of male Roman Catholic actors who’ve considered the priesthood – both jobs involve standing up in front of an audience wearing funny clothes; it’s easy to become a bit confused about which one you really want to do. 😀

    #3609
    wolfweed @wolfweed

Yeah – I should have said Monastic ‘destiny’ or similar. McCoy abandoned the idea after  he discovered ‘girls fronts’, whilst Tom Baker was fed up of looking down at peoples’ shoes all day every day!

Thank you for all the links @wolfweed. The publicity is really ramping up now for the new series. I expect we won’t hear much about the 50th special until this series is well under way or even concluded especially given that these next episodes are leading up to the special.

    Only four sleeps to go….

    Cheers

3 new videos on the Dr Who website today. At this rate we’ll have seen the whole 1st episode before it airs!

Jeez @wolfweed , nothing from you for ages then a deluge! 😀 Is welcome though. @bluesqueakpip if you check out the original coming soon trailer (http://www.thedoctorwhoforum.com/forums/topic/series-7-part-2-speculation/#post-913) it inlcudes some scenes in a monastery, and the trailer I posted a few days ago shows The Doctor turning up at Clara’s dressed as a monk, so I’m guessing his search for Clara starts in a Monastery (possibly pre-credits) then leads him to modern day London.

So, opened up the new Radio Times to check out the Doctor Who article, and spotted a picture of John Simm in the new period drama he’s in.

He’s got a beard. Very nice one, quite a genuine-looking beard. A well-grown beard, in fact, that could – with a bit of trimming – easily take its place alongside the Delgado and Ainsley beards.

The interesting thing is that the period drama he’s in is set in 1914, and beards were pretty unusual in 1914 – most men wore moustaches. It almost feels like he had to keep the beard for another part…

    I lost my mojo….. It’s alright, I got it back…

Less than 3 days to go.

How far we’ve come. Thanks again @craig et al.

50th Anniversary begins filming on Monday unless it’s an April Fools joke – expect those! The perfect time to film old Drs but I doubt it will happen now… I think we might be in for Forrest Gump instead, complete with one of the Drs other wives: Marilyn Monroe…

I think one of my earliest posts on this site was about a book called “Behind the Sofa”. It’s great to see it’s got a professional disctibution deal in an expanded format for the 50th anniversary through Gollancz.

Article about it here. All for a worthwhile cause, etc.

    Well here’s some news.

Casting announcement for the 50th anniversary
. I thought about the spoilers section, but I think you’ll be hard pressed to avoid this one.

    I mean…. John Hurt. What a star. 😉

Okay, I’m going to wait to speculate until people’ve had a chance to read the article. But that particular pair do raise an intriguing question in my mind. 🙂

@phaseshift — so at least one past Doctor in the mix then. (Unless DT is playing the alternate universe pseudo-regeneration version. I’d expect that we’ll see Eccleston also then. Maybe it’ll be a nu-Who only reunion affair.

Starting to very much look forward to this now. It’ll be fine to see Docs 10 and 11 interact with each other.

    #3785
    Juniperfish @juniperfish

In relation to the lovely Paternoster Gang post-Demon’s run webisode which @phaseshift posted the links to and which I also saw via a link on Tumblr. All UK links have now stopped working and “removed due to a copyright claim by BBC WorldWide” appears on YouTube etc.

This article explains that the webisode is currently only availabe to view in North America http://www.doctorwhonews.net/2013/03/demons-run-250313230008.html

I can’t tell you how irritated I am by this.

On Tumblr Doctor Who is marketing itself to a young US audience full steam ahead. No problem with that per se – share the love – but why are we in the UK not being given access to content paid for by our license fee?

It does feel a little like being taken for granted whilst the BBC’s commercial arm pursues marketing Who abroad?

    #3791
    Bluesqueakpip @bluesqueakpip

If the webisode was paid for by BBC Worldwide, rather than being from the main Who budget, they’d be entitled to ask for it to be taken down: the UK licence payers won’t have paid for it. I suspect it’ll turn up on the DVD.

Given that Julie Gardner is still very much part of BBC Worldwide, and that the BBC proper appears determined to stiff their most successful drama programme of its needed budget, I wonder if they’re trying to work out some kind of co-funding ‘lifeboat’ for Who.

    chickenelly @chickenelly

Not really news as such, but the Peter Cushing film ‘Doctor Who and the Daleks’ is on Channel Five today.

I’ve not seen it for years, but I’ve got a vague memory of it being on a Saturday morning and thinking ‘where’s Tom Baker?’  Now that I’ve come to terms with more than one person playing the Doctor, I might give it a look.

Or I may just toddle off to the shops looking for half price Easter eggs…

    #3941
    ScaryB @scaryb

@chickenelly I’d go for the Easter egg hunting. Although maybe it’s not so bad – haven’t seen it since I was about 8/9 – couldn’t get past that it seemed like a huge cash-in without any understandng of what DW was about.  The Doctor isn’t even an alien!

    #3943
    ScaryB @scaryb

@bluesqueakpip It’s really annoying that the rest of the world seems to be getting more Who tributes than the UK 🙁

So far we’ve definitely got – An Adventure in… documentary and the 50th special in 3D and possibly 60mins – which will presumably be broadcast worldwide anyway. And a lot of doubt re when series 8 is going to be recorded, never mind aired. That ain’t “all over TV” in my book!

    <OMG I’m turning into @jimthefish!!!>

I heard tonight, (from a friend) that it has been announced that Matt has signed on for another year. I can’t hunt down the news myself to see if it is true as our lovely, darling sons have used all our internet for the month. Grrrr.

@janetteb — Can’t see anything at all on the interwebs about Smithy signing on for another year — but do take note of the date….

    On which note…

    http://doctorwhotv.co.uk/doctor-whos-police-box-axed-42019.htm

although @wolfweed‘s — who clearly has better interntz skillz than me — little tidbit seems to suggest otherwise. Personally I’d love Smith to stay but I’ve just got a feeling that he’ll be going this year.

@bluesqueakpip — ‘you will become like uzzz’ ….

    #3965
    Bluesqueakpip @bluesqueakpip

I think io9 took it from the following line in his RT interview: “I’m attached to the show for the next year and I take it year by year. I think that’s the only way you can take it.”

So unless they’ve seen an advance copy of next week’s RT in which they chat about his plans for Series 8, that leaves us with what we already know. He’s attached for the 50th Anniversary Special and the Christmas Special. io9 have simply misread ‘next year’ as ‘including filming for Series 8’ – but if he’s in the Christmas Special he’s ‘attached’ for publicity right up to December 2013.

Certainly a surprise regeneration would explain the total blanket silence (sorry!) on S8, plus the ominous lack of filming dates. They can’t start filming until they can announce the new Doctor. If there IS a new Doctor, and the 50th Anniversary story isn’t about trying to find him/her.

And on that story idea, I present the bonkers idea that the DT and BP casting announcement could represent a ‘search for the Doctor’ story. DT is appearing as 10.5; when The Doctor (all The Doctors?) are lost, his origins as a Time Lord human hybrid means that he survives.

To headline the 50th, because DT has the track record to headline. Mr Smith is appearing as the Big Bad (Omega?)

    Juniperfish @juniperfish

    @bluesqueakpip

10.2 and Rose happy and detecting together would make a million shipper hearts explode with joy (they are still a much loved pairing in fandom).

Yes, Smithy as the villain I like very much. He’d be great at it.

BUT I am still in denial/ traumatised at the thought of losing him this year <sulks in a corner with a packet of jammy dodgers>.

    #3981
    Anonymous @

@bluesqueakpip — yes, I’ve been thinking along similar lines recently that Smithy is going to become the Big Bad — the Doctorised Great Intelligence in a Ganger maybe?? Or as the remanifestation of Omega? But I don’t think DT would over-dominate a series special — he’s enough of a fan to understand how multi-Doc stories work and I’m sure he’d be happy to appear in that context.

I did also think that io9 were very much over-interpreting a single quote. “Attached to the series” could mean anything. Season 8’s Big Bad could well be Smith up against a new Doctor. Or be seen in flashbacks or the like. And I think your explanations of why they’re being so tardy in announcing season 8 could be spot on.

Just nipping in to post this https://twitter.com/bbcdoctorwho

Not sure how it works if you’re not a tweeter but they’ve just tweeted new pics from just after  the readthrough today.  Plus a slightly odd one of John Hurt in that it looks like it’s from a filmed bit rather than the readthrough. But maybe it’s from a different role of they’ve photoshopped in a suitable background. <excited squeals!>

@Juniperfish ?In the brief period when I could be arsed with TWoP’s self-indulgent drivel, by login was ShippingIsEvil.

    Anyway. ZYGONS!

    #4029
    Juniperfish @juniperfish

@scaryb So excited to see Smithy and Tenant together but so very sad we won’t have Ecclestone to complete the NuWho trio – SUCH a shame.

@pedant Wut? Shipping is fun! Not so commonly practiced in your demographic as some others perhaps 🙂 Cute fan art and fictions are involved… what’s not to love? Moffat seems to ship Eleven with everyone, or rather he knows how to plant shipping bait… We’ve had a Rory/ Doctor kiss and a Craig/ Doctor almost kiss as well as Amy, River and Clara kisses. Let’s see if he manages to shoehorn in a Ten/ Eleven kiss. Bets anyone?

Meanwhile – I want my Captain Jack fix! Maybe Moff just can’t cope with having the mess that Torchwood became anywhere near his bright shiny 50th anniversary? Shame, as he created the good captain in the first place.

    #4041

No! Shipping is evil. It it a cancer on fandom. Need I say anything more that Spuffy? The only one who got where their pre-soul relationship had to go was Marti Noxon – and she was frequently abused and booed by the one’s who thought Spikey-wikey and the Buffster could wiv happiwy eber aftah so there! When they turn up, any attempt at sensible discussion is over. (SMGfans banned ALL shipping discussion)

No problem with slash – that’s just funny – but every shipper should be forced to watch Moonlighting from beginning to end. Not only would they get an ace show, but they would understand what happens when you let the sexual chemistry be acted upon (even if Willis and Shepherd hated each other in reality).  If there is a group in fandom that fails to grasp the expression “be careful what you wish for”, it’s shippers.

Moffat yanks their collective chain; RTD skirted with pandering but stayed just the right side decent.

    And anyway: ZYGONS.

    Oooooh. What a good vent!

    #4049
    Juniperfish @juniperfish

@pedant The shipping discussion is probably “off message” in this thread (not sure where it would go – the sofa perhaps?). BUT, I nonetheless challenge you with my lightsaber, as I have a deep and abiding affection for Spuffy <wolfish grin>. Shipping doesn’t have to mean demanding “happily ever after”.

    I also love Marti Noxon…

It’s a complex subject. Slash can be deadly serious. I’m actually wondering if Dean/ Castiel is going to hop, skip and jump from subtext to plain old text in Supernatural.

But yes – back to Dr. Who news and ZYGONS. I ship Zygons/ Silence waltzing in suits at some eerie anachronistic ball presided over by Richard E. Grant.  Zygons can shapeshift so maybe Richard E. Grant is a Zygon pretending to be the Great Intelligence?

    .

    #4055
    Anonymous @

I have no idea what all this shipping talk is about. I’ve been thinking in terms of boats and manifests and cargoes but that’s clearly wrong, isn’t it?

The return of the Zygons is interesting but I have to say that that pic on the official site doesn’t exactly wow me. Maybe they’ll look better in situ. But then they were rather the epitome of the man in a rubber suit kind of monster. I think a more dramatic revamp a la the Silurians might have been in order for them.

But maybe not. Maybe we should just let Zygons be Zygons. Arf. (Sorry. I’ll get me coat.)

    #4067
    HaveYouFedTheFish @haveyoufedthefish

I hardly dare say this @juniperfish but Zygons almost certainly mean YADD (yet another doppel-doctor)

    #4071
    Bluesqueakpip @bluesqueakpip

Are we up to eleven Elevens yet?

    (Now I’ll get me coat)

    #4077
    HaveYouFedTheFish @haveyoufedthefish

Hey, remember a few months back when we were all about references to lights?

Maybe we should be asking “how many elevens does it take to change a lightbulb?”

    #4079
    Bluesqueakpip @bluesqueakpip

None. Eleven just takes the TARDIS back in time to before the lightbulb was broken.

    (Coat. Mine. Get)

    #4091

@jimthefish Shipping – derived from relationship. Some fans – <legpull mode on>like @juniperfish think whether Character A gets it on with Character B is the only thing that matters and won’t stop boring on about it because apparently in a show about empowered women the one thing the women need is a good bad man<legpull mode off>. And Breath! Sometimes show runners pay them too much heed (the one black mark on the history of Veronica Mars)

So, anyway. Zygons.  A multiplicity of Doctors, or a multiplicity of Clara’s?

    As for Eccelstone, where zygon?

    #4093

    Pardon the redundant apostrophe.
