So – massive apologies for neglecting this thread (and the forum).
Will blame work but ‘reasons’ and ‘excuses’ are different things, and work is an excuse. My new job is in retail and so xmas is a “big effing deal” (ie upwards of 50% of profit for the year) but still.
No matter how busy, I should always make time for friends.

Obviously we’ve had this before (and I really dislike Wonder’s song) but it would only leave me with Bjork and I know she’s an acquired taste.

@whisht  well, I, for one, can forgive you! Dad died 2 weeks ago and this left me in a cranky mood whereupon I became a sniping flamer for 3 days or so. The 13 yr old Boy Ilion is also now behaving like the teen he officially is. This morning it was “have you seen my yellow and blue shirt? Whatdidyoudowithit???”

“What shirt, dear?”

“The shirt I need for swim carnival. Remember?”

“what swim carnival? Why can’t you wear your actual uniform?”

“Don’t you get anything, mother?  I ALWAYS wear that shirt for carnivals!!”  Slams door, thumpy shoes, throwing all the drawers open and dragging junk food out of the fridge.  People without kids: consider staying that way!!

I hope work is not too unbearable as far as the Chrimble cheer is considered, Whisht. The word ‘cheer’ is not entirely true  -I feel – at this time of mad shoppers, crazed deadlines and the fearful Black Friday situation…requiring an armoury of toughness

I think I’ve shared this track before but it jumped into my mind when I thought of “something that will make walking through crowds of shoppers and general shit easier”.

@whisht thank you for the kind words. I have changed since those events -suddenly (maybe a wacky a coping mechanism) I’m nicer, less snappy, more accepting. Everyone’s alive, I adore life, the house will be fine, dad is happy as star dust.  Also, something rather wonderful happened the other day….which was a nice in this time of crazy.

But. Yesterday I was all “I can handle it, I’m wonderwoman”.

Then, 3 tradesman arrived at the same time and I mislaid my phone….I’m looking at the giant skip with horror and thinking I can’t jump in there can I??  No worries, get the landline, ring the phone (Who ring tone).

Landline died.

Cursing.

Boy Ilion comes home and I’m sack cloth and ashes – he says, ‘calm down, we’ll borrow a friend’s phone and ring every inch of the house.’

Do I have friends?  I’m using all my favours up preeetty quickly…

He says: “btw, you’re jeans pockets are lose”. Ignored him.

Got into car to ‘phone a friend’ and the electric seat automatically sets my height…the phone is stuck in the wiring.

I could have used a (brain: re pockets; after all it wasn’t a wedding dress…) a sonic at that point: hours of cursing and snotty crying.  I was calm about the rain (we had another storm yesterday; totally horizontal), the by-pass, the flood, the terror alert (oops) but the PHONE? No, I totally lost it.

There’s a song about the rain: of course there are many, but can’t remember the name; I could sing it Whisht but…

@pedant (he never reads this far) I love Buffy. God, I believe I have a crush…. The line in the next to last episode of 1st season: “He’s been Kayser Sozayed” broke us up. The 13 yr old loves The Usual Suspects (I know, bad mothering: add that to all the rest).

Are you a Buffy fan Whisht? Pedant and @jimthefish and many others like it. The ’90s I was oot and aboot being a busy bad girl -no time to watch TV (I was all “TV is such sh**) when a lot was good.

Love Joni. When played this to dear Mun about 12 years ago she said “she’s a bit flat”: Take it from me Mum, she aint flat”. She likes the 10 Tenors and Easy Listening. Mind you, I like a tenor. I’m a Pavarotti fan and I know that’s not cool but listening to him singing Per la Adorarvi brings out goose bumps.

It’s that top note, the pico second of a pause and a high top note: I am “aaahuuuoooph”. Followed by ” aaaaaahhh”

@pedant   Noel:  isn’t that a beautifully written episode? It was unusual, I had to take a second viewing. I really enjoyed Arkin as the shrink (hope I’m right there) and also the quiet psych sitting in the corner: watching, waiting, watching, thinking.

First visit with Ainsley: “Ainsley with an n” -does anyone know an Ainsley with an “m”? I found that odd. Clearly, Ainsley is a common name?

20 Hours in a America: I haven’t seen it in two years. Boy, do I recall the vast landscape of those two episodes. And the dialogue:

Josh and Toby go nuts and have to “re-group for about 15 minutes” but only after meeting ‘crazy’ girls who snipe, “Yeah, how many babies have you killed today?” Josh says “Danger, Will Robinson”. Probably a lot of people (now) wouldn’t know it – that great show from my childhood (well, I was only 5)

I feel more Buffy blowing in but also another fuckin’ storm -sorry, but heck, it’s every day. And they’re rip roarers. Power out, things blowing up, bricks the size of hail. One day without a flood please God! Make it tonight. Kid’s ‘graduation’. He’s 13. Yep, they graduate primary school in Oz.

@pedant I had no idea that that marvellous scene was tori amos?  How the heck did I not know that?  I watch that scene repeatedly. Honestly, I hear that song (and indeed we perform it orchestrally) ALL the time. Usually it’s performed with too much ‘whisper’?

I always liked the original. I remember the day I first heard it. I recall what I was wearing. What day it was and what I ate. That was an amazing moment for me -possibly one of the best songs I’ve ever heard.

A lot of people don’t know the information behind the song… History? What dat dude?

Bad Arbutus! I have failed to keep up with things in this lovely little music lounge. I brought a glass in from the pub and spent some time this afternoon enjoying the offerings.

@thekrynoidman    I don’t know that I have ever posted “Waterloo Sunset”, but it is one of my favourites. Thanks! I never actually saw Phantom of the Paradise, but I agree about Paul Williams, a fabulous and underrated songwriter. Back in my wannabe songwriter days, his songs were always on my “go-to” list. And goodness, “Windmills of your Mind.” That takes me back! There were a lot of versions of that floating about; I used to play it on the piano. Lovely chord progressions. 🙂

@whisht     Love Taj Mahal and fully agree that there can never be too much tuba (although Mr. Arbutus, a bass trombone player, used to sing the memorable song from Music Man as “76 trombones is way too many” with a great deal of glee!).
Also Whisht and @lisa, another thing you can’t have too much of is Tom Waits!

I hope everyone is managing to find their happy place amidst all the festive insanity. I spent yesterday evening at two different Christmas performances. The first one, at the music school where I volunteer, featured tiny cellists and violinists and pianists, ,  boys in ties or tee shirts, and girls dressed up like little members of the Ballets Russes. And a lovely choir which made me cry. The second one, at the music school where Arbutus Jr. sings, featured slightly older kids, mostly teenagers, playing electric guitars and percussion instruments, and singing songs they’d composed themselves. @lisa, there was one young woman with an acoustic guitar and very long hair, singing in an earnest soprano, who I am sure owns every Joni Mitchell recording ever! And the choir, singing Pharrell Williams’ “Happy” and a very soulful “Bridge Over Troubled Waters”. Really a delight.

So, because it represents all things Christmas and kid, because it’s happy, and because it’s cool:

@arbutus My x-hippy husband also loved the Music Man [he admitted with a sort of shy reluctance
to me in our early days.] Apparently it could be a boys and girls that played musical instruments in
bands thing but not sure. He only played with the school band for 1 term and graduated to a rock
band however its still his favorite musical flick.

Btw – love Charlie Brown Xmas !! I think you are on to something here – lets all start

@arbutus and @lisa thank you for your music and the fun. I enjoyed that vicariously as last night was Boy Ilion’s  Year 7 ‘graduation’ -last year before high school in QLD (although that’s now changing). It was utterly monotonous; the speeches consisted of “I validate you”; are you excited, come on, be excited; Your teachers are swans and no one touches their cubs, although people eat swans in England”. I’m pretty sure that’s not entirely correct. 3 mind numbing hours and an awful music/photo video. Others cried. So did I, but for a different reason.

@purofilion    Oh my goodness. Three hours sounds dire! I remember Arbutus Jr.’s Grade 7 grad (a couple of years ago now) and it was really quite charming. There were a few earnest valedictory speeches, a couple of students performed songs, and the teacher went through the list of grads and said something funny about each one. There was a video. The whole thing took about an hour, but it was a small school.

Afterward, they kicked all the parents out so the kids could have their “grad dance”. They voted for it; Arbutus Jr. was somewhat choked that they hadn’t voted for the amusement park as the previous year’s grads had done, and terrified that he was going to be made to dance! But when I came in part way through to deliver some more beverages (the drinks always run out at parties, don’t they?), the girls in their dresses and heels, and the boys in their ties, were all running around the gym playing with the balloons.  🙂

I’ve been driving all over the place today, which makes me cranky even without the extra Christmas traffic. At one point, I hit five red lights in five blocks! Even for this city, that’s bad. So here’s what made me happy (along with a pot of tea and a bunch of holly and pine branches) after I got home.

Week of madness almost behind me! I got through it swimming on the memory of our annual carol sing last weekend, when our little band of medievalists gets together to sing all our favourite carols, famous and obscure. I tried to find a good version of one of our very favourites, Bach’s In dulci jubilo, but couldn’t find any nice version in German. But we also enjoy some wonkier stuff, such as this one.

Disclaimer: We don’t sound like this! We fumble our way through the solo verses as none of us really knows Spanish, and usually collapse under the weight of too many syllables and too much wine. A good time is had by all.

@arbutus thank you for that. At one point I think I was listening to two over-lapping works? I was thinking, hell, these people are good: 7/4 time signatures over ‘the standard’. Progressive.

Then I closed a window and  got the unmushed up version. Beautiful. I’m  glad you have time for your music now, Arbutus, and also to get festivities underway. Bring it on!

Hi @arbutus – Charlie Brown Christmas is my xmas music too!
I was never that into the cartoon or comic strip (although maybe it seeped in), but when I first heard that music many years ago, I had to get it!

I now play it every year and when I played it at work on last Friday, it had the typical reacion, where unexpected people say “omg – is that Charlie Brown? Vince, erm… Vince… whasssisname Guaraldi!”
