Live at Woodstock – amazing live band; Grace Slick had one of THE great rock voices.

Also found this short interview with her (fairly recent, from 2008) – still feisty and very much her own woman by the sound of it – talks about  rabbits and planning to spike Nixon’s tea with acid.  (Glad she’s (presumably) got past the alcohol problems that meant she bailed from the tour I had tickets  for)

so – nearly the new year.

And I’ve been looking for something appropriate. however, even after looking for choons with “Happy” that I’ve not posted before, “new” “year” “better” etc etc etc I couldn’t find anything that felt like “fuck it – lets just get the hell down and get on with the next year already!”

So, I’ve ignored a lot and have just randomly selected a tune that makes me smile, tap, dance, nod my head ever more vigorously and then get the damn hell down.

this album btw is one of the most awesome things in the whole world and I really must find a book about how the hell it came to be (I’ll scan the liner notes if anyone’s interested!)

On the subject of dreams (and I’ve just woken up a bit) this one always reminds me of New Year 1990. I was in my University town, in a pub and it was a bit dead. Isolated groups of people sat about, carefully not knowing each other. A disparate mixture of rivet-heads, goths, trendies, and god knows what. What could unite this group? What could breach the barrier and promote a good hearted sing-along? What, frankly, had we all watched as kids before “Why Don’t You?” told us to turn off our television sets in Summer Holidays?

ah @purofilion – Music to Clean to – I love a challenge! (al;though apologies as you’ve probably finished by now)

Well, lets get the obvious out of the way shall we?

Grimes is an artist I know nothing about and this performance is sweeter than I thought her music was, and a little weak at times but she’s still far more talented than I so who am I to argue (but yes – chosen because of her name!).

Thinking of dirty houses I always liked this line “yer got eggs on the drainboard; got pie on the walls”

Of course you may want to not think of cleaning the house but instead be thinking of cleaning something else… like a city area, or yourself (or Yrself even).

But really – honestly, the ONLY album you should be listening to is “Goo” by Sonic Youth (as its better than “Dirty” by the same band 🙂

(jeezus – listening to Goo would mean some furious hovering… – and I now realise I don’t have it on my pc so I must’ve lent/lost it – must buy again today!)

After all that cleaning you’ll want something calming and serene – so here’s something I heard after reading the brilliant Julian Cope’s album review.

@purofilion    That little number is in Dorian, but proper Dorian with B naturals. So lovely and ancient-sounding. A lot of that stuff is sadly unavailable in transcription, outside of a few big mid-century collections in university libraries.

Hi @purofilion – not sure about that doc (I do enjoy watching music docs but don’t remember that line at least!).

One thing I enjoyed that was on iPlayer were the Dave Grohl/ Foo Fighters films that followed the making of their latest album.
The actual music itself wasn’t that interesting(!) but his obvious interest in people and their stories, his openess and sheer delight in stuff is very infectious.
He deliberately wanted to shine a light on specific studios as he wanted to show how the culture of music was fuelled by these places where creativity, commerce and slightly odd characters intersect.
Its rather touching in places as he delivers portraits of these studio managers, engineers and producers with their dogged single-mindedness.

Anyway, glad you liked the cleaning music! I was also thinking of linking to this Dirty guy, but thought I’d linked enough.

I just find his delivery extraordinary and really interesting. Its patchy stuff (ie maybe 2 or 3 great tracks off an album) but what he did manage to put down is certainly unique (at least to me).
The track above also makes “Jump around” sound a tad… safe, though I still like it!

@scaryb  wow! to Bowie -and to Elvis. Thank you. I finished a thesis in a music dept which was very conservative. I chose to ‘investigate’ glam rock and our prof at the time organised a phone interview with the man himself.

I was about 21, a dullard and nervous. I started with a cough and said, “eer, he.. helloo.. Mister Bowie?”

This was during his phase in Germany I should add.  He said “oh, sit down darlin’; what do you wanna know?”

I have no idea what I said but the prof silently left-which helped my nervous ninny-self to calm down. When I exited the room, half the dept was waiting silently outside the room and leapt on me with questions. One dude -a prof of Medieval Music (sorry @arbutus) who wore orange cords and shiny sapphire shirts – glared and slammed his door. He was one of the supervisors. I passed -but by a hair, only. Ass.

Happy Days, puro. (PS: a few Christmas’ ago I finally replaced my vinyl of Scary Monsters with a CD which stays in the car on ‘replay’)

This made me laugh so much I just had to post. Some guy felt a few top country songs sounded the same so mashed them up. He altered pitch and tempo a bit to make it work but the result is brilliant and has gone viral.

just another example of miserable country music that objectifies some horrible notions. It shows

@lisa Just to clarify, when I said I thought it was brilliant, I thought it was brilliantly put together and was amusing because it DOES represent all that is wrong with a certain type of country that I was, until I heard it, unaware of. What is “Bro-country”? Seems a lot of Country fans don’t like it either which is why it went viral.

I’ve never been a country fan but my Dad was, so I have a soft spot for the likes of Glen Campbell, Crystal Gayle, Dolly Parton, Kenny Rodgers, Emmylou Harris, Charlie Pride, Tammy Wynette etc. They remind me of growing up and all had great songs that still pop into my head every now and again. The above is a travesty, but it’s still a brilliantly put together one.

@craig I thought about your post and yes – I was definitely referring to the ‘new global pop country’.
The older style country was sometimes more blues-y and/or rockabilly etc. and there were some good
songs and the artists seemed more connected to their music. Some of it was even more sophisticated. Allman
Brothers also made good country/rock/blues and there are some others but even so most of the old stuff
still just makes me cringe.
Especially the ‘twangy’ harp tunes . Ugh!

Only just now able to post any kind of thoughts on this.

This ‘new’ or ‘pop’ country certainly puts the ‘something’ into ‘Country’.

Not that Country or any genre isn’t formulaic, but I just don’t ‘believe’ in the music that’s referenced in that great mashup.
Mind you don’t get me started on the bs that is “authenticity”.

But, let that not be an excuse not to paste some Country here – it was a genre I used to hate until I got over myself.
Its impossible to hate an entire genre – there’s always something you’ll find you like.

Actually I’ve no idea about the definition of the genre. I have this and its called ‘American Folk’ – is that Country?

As a toddler I used to tap away in my cot to a couple of Johnny Cash albums (Orange Blossom Special and another I think) but sadly not this one

and this is…. well, I have no idea where they were in their relationship, but he has intentions and its… well its not the same look back from Rita.

I knew (and know) nothing about him but he was on an anthology CD I got of ‘American Folk’. Some cracking stuff on it.

It’s a shame, country music gets such a bad name in some circles (not always unjustified for some of its 70s big hair incarnation) but it’s such a wide genre that there’s probably something you’ll like (that you didn’t even know was “country”!). A  lot of it is cutting edge and has a lot to say for itself eg Cash, Willie Nelson, Earl Okin, Gillian Welch, Lucinda Williams, and loads more.

The hugely underrated (in the mainstream anyway) and prolific John Prine – if you don’t know him check him out, you won’t be disappointed. This is about a soldier post Vietnam… or any war:

More country, this from the fabulous Emmylou Harris (Wrecking Ball – no, not that one! (this was first 🙂 )

(I like this live version, but her original recorded version with the very moody producer Daniel Lanois is worth checking out – CD stuck on “repeat” when I first got the album)

She also did this with the legendary Gram Parsons (who probably helped to invent country rock with his bands the Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers. Before dying far too young). If you don’t like this you have a heart of stone!

@whisht Ramblin Jack is great (saw him live a few years ago), and thanks for the Cash track. Laughed at the Kristofferson/Coolidge vid – body language can say SUCH a lot!  A masterclass in how to maintain even a smidgeon of your own space when you have to share a mic! (Although they did have a “thing” for a while)

Personally I get pissed off with “genres” in general – a lot of the time it’s lazy critics who want to know “but what IS it?” in case they get caught liking something that’s “not cool”! Who careswhat category it fits into.

me down and I couldn’t listen to any of it all the way thru. But there are a few gifted ‘country’ talents
that have been known to pump out some good tunes now and then –here and there –

Confirmation we’re the same age, I think. I grew to loath trips with my dad as he put on his “nice’n’easy” C&W tapes. But his weren’t approaching the calibre of the artistes you mention. 🙁

I guess the difference in ages really does tell on this one, but this was the kind of thing my Dad used to play, brilliantly parodied by Billy Connelly.

Country and Western Supersong (apologies for picture quality).

I think the entry point for C&W for me was bizarre – The Blues Brothers, playing Rawhide in that film. I just loved the sound of the steel guitar. As I got into adolescence and explored music a bit, I got into Blues, from there some Bluegrass, and invevitably some C&W. Like any genre, an AWFUL lot of crap but truly some gems. In doing this I came to realise that the earthy stuff was really engaging.

In the 80s a few bands started to reference C&W from their youth in covers etc. This was the punk generation, and when you hear people like Siouxsie and the Banshees play “Gun” or Social Distortion play “Ring of Fire” you can feel the energy.

I you want someone taking the piss out of new-wave C&W, I’ll leave it to the master – Otis lee Crenshaw.

Oh yes, the C&W toons in the old Holden, stickin’ to the vinyl with afternoon sand and sweat.  It got so I would purposely ruin the cassettes so we wouldn’t hear some dude from Mt Isa hollerin’ away to his untuned gee-tar. Cassettes had a short shelf life although my brother voiced opinions on the 30 mins cassettes lasting waaay longer-so he would force his family to listen to Rod Stewart in Romance mode. And then turn it over: “what in heaven’s name have you done?”
