nite @lisa. I agree with you and @idiotsavon on most points. I think the reason that Sci Fi etc doesn’t get people “talking over the back fence” is because it is still a niche interest. Dr Who certainly generates plenty of discussion amongst its fans and stories such as “Vincent” showed that it can and does touch on “real world” issues and plays…[Read more]

@idiotsavon Well I think perhaps I take your meaning —–that you can have “real’ or
realistic people with good intentions portrayed [in any genre of storytelling} and they
can still also be flawed anti-heroes ?

Anyway- I am being ‘required’
so I need to humbly request to continue our conversation later ugh !
nite L.

@idiotsavon– Yes however I haven’t been able to get my head around how it all completely connects with the story arc yet – but I blame Perkins!! That character has sideswiped me totally and taken me off topic ! lol
So any brilliant contributions of how all the Belief puzzle blends in is much appreciated at this point !! 🙂

btw— the comment above was meant at @Idiotsavon [ oops ]

@idiotsavon

Do you think I’m being unfair if I say that anything fantastical is automatically distant from real life and therefore less powerful in a political sense?

Simply Yes. 🙂 Well written fantasy/sci fi could made a stronger statement about real life than stories set in “real life”. For instance I would argue that shows like “Midsummer M…[Read more]

@idiotsavon – The first series of Star Trek was roughly at the time of Man going to the Moon and then the Carl Sagan series Cosmos happened so all together they reinforced an completely new notion of our future having amazing possibilities –
When it was picked up again years later the stories dealt with social issues even more in the script…[Read more]

@idiotsavon— I think Star Trek has had a massive effect on society !! The technology- the stories- the charecters – and social debates too ! There were tons of firsts about that show – When I was a kid I
watched it in the same way I watch Doctor Who and have the same kind of respect for it

@idiotsavon

Good choice. I think its Sylvester’s best story. Let me know what you think…. Enjoy

ah @idiotsavon – it seems in your household Red Snapper divides opinion as much as Courtney (well, any child actor) does in being a companion.

Its definitely an anxious piece of music!

So now I’ll go all ‘radio’ and apologise if you’ve just listened to Red Snapper and are all in a bit of a tizz (even if you’re a dog); so…

@idiotsavon Brain Blessed and huskies!!! What an excellent combination. And for my random Dr Who reference just to keep vaguely on topic, it is more than time that B.B. had another Dr Who cameo. (Huskies are very welcome too.)

Summer here. We don’t get such niceties as spring and autumn. One week one is freezing in boots and layers of cloths and…[Read more]

@idiotsavon thanks for the link. I just wish it had audio. Love Brain Blessed’s voice. I am going to have to watch Tom Jones now. I have had it for ages but I loved the book so much I have always feared that the tv adaptation would not live up to expectations.

Cheers

@Oblique, @Purofilion I almost fainted when I saw you both think

Amy and Clara virtually indistinguishable-yes

No! I have always felt Amy and Clara are complete polar opposites! Where Amy was brash and determined, Clara is thoughtful and cautious. I can remember people on here remarking how, when we first met Clara, she stayed put when the Doctor…[Read more]

Hi @doctorwhocraze465 – looking forward to the pics!

Hi @idiotsavon – like janetteb really enjoy your posts!
I’ve not done one of these sofa intros to myself and it’s probably a bit pointless now, but really liked yours as it was so straightforward.

I think we gave a number of teachers and lecturers here (though I’m not one!)

@idiotsavon So we finally get to know what the name means. Not a Blake’s 7 reference after all. 😉 A very warm, though belated, welcome to the forum. I do enjoy your posts.

Cheers

@idiotsavon

There’s a huge push in at-risk African countries to educate the population.

There is indeed. Sierra Leone, if I’m remembering correctly, has an excellent national radio service. And I’m told there’s lots of posters up.

But, as you say, it’s no good telling people to go to a health centre if the health centre hasn’t the facilities f…[Read more]

However, I think it would be far more interesting – in a philosophy/ethics kind of way – if it came back as a malevolent monster that had to be killed: Begging the question whether saving it in the first place was the right thing to do.

You can get that on just about any current TV show. Consequential ethics (basically a sub…[Read more]
