No idea about who it might be but after the inspired choices of Tennant and Smith I’m confident that the choice will be unexpected, relatively little known and surprisingly brilliant. However I do think that Matt has filmed his regeneration and it will begin at the end of the 50th, it would be fitting but more importantly has anyone seen the state of his hair. I did wonder how they were going to cope with his skinhead! Now it reads as a drastic haircut after being released from the constraints of a no cut contract, in the same way as Emma Watson chopped her hair after Potter finished. I know it was for a role but was surprised he’d been allowed, now however I think it’s not an issue.

@bluesqueakpip – I think you make some good points about the girls thinking they can’t be the doctor and so don’t play with the figures (dolls!!) as much. But if, as you say, the long introduction of the female doctor might offset any ill will towards JLC and the particular incarnation of the doctor, then maybe Clara is the Doctor.

Still don’t buy it though, but you’ve convinced me it could be possible, maybe.

@shazzbot – I would hope that a female Doctor would increase young femail viewers, there is a market for shows with strong female leads – The Hunger Games come to mind – and girls are increasingly engaged with traditionally ‘male’ genres. The Avengers couldn’t have made that much money without them. So maybe I should have more faith in the young fan-girls.

@davemorris316 I don’t see the suits at the BBC allowing for a femail doctor for financial reasons – and I say the following as a girl who likes handbags and Doctor Who, so don’t shoot me but…

I teach 7/8 year olds and the kids who like Doctor Who are boys, the kids who bring in the action figures are boys, and the lunch bags, and the top trump cards etc. The girls in my classes for the past few years have had  all kinds of lunch bags, JLS, Hello Kitty, One Direction and many more but I’ve not seen a girl with a Doctor Who one. The merchandise must make up a huge income stream for the BBC and I’m guessing that most of it is bought for boys (and middle aged nerds – I’m ducking!!) I’d guess that a proportion of this lucrative audience wouldn’t be that impressed with a femail Doctor – I know they adored Amy but the Doctor is the ‘hero’ and I think the suits would not want to risk the ‘brand’.

I know you can say ‘well my daughter/sister/niece is a HUGE fan and has all the action figures etc…’ but I can only speak from what I have seen generally. Would the boys in my class love Doctor Who as much if its’ central hero was a girl, I’m not sure and I don’t think the BBC would want to take the risk. I realise the femail companion is a huge part of the show, and you could argue that a femail doctor is not that big a leap, but I’m not convinced.

I really liked it and was so glad when Jenny came back to life. Can’t wait for November and feel the need to do a complete nu-who rewatch in preparation for the 50th (never watched any old episodes).

@shazzbot @scaryb I adore River and feel the character always brings an exciting energy to the show. However, as much as I hope she is back, it felt like a goodbye. As for when she learns his name if she never reappears I will think of them having a private ‘real’ wedding where she learns his name.

I don’t really think Clara and River are the same person and think I would be disappointed if they where. They seem to have quite different personalities, all 3 versions of Clara have been pretty similar at their core, whilst River seems different.

No two parallel universes going on, red/blue bow tie/balloon world, and I feel the ganger doctor might be done with. But really pleased with the ending to the series. Can’t wait for John Hurt, feel he’s going to be amazing. The look of his character was realy interesting, definitely war (and world) weary.

So…bonkers theory…

In the season finale does River turn up with a baby, they need the name of the doctor to name the baby. Then river dumps baby with dad to run off and do whatever she was doing when she turned up in the library. (Can’t remember how they described it) That would leave an opening for a nanny, then the next series turns into a crazy bringing up baby (not a leopard) caper.

Maybe not.

I really liked this, even though I watched it in two parts, with a few vodka filled hours in the middle. (Very inconsiderate friends having parties on a Saturday evening!!!!) I will have to rewatch this tomorrow properly but couldn’t help but notice Clara’s dress, it seemed to me to be switching colour between red and blue.

The fish around here have hooked me on their red/blue theories, and I realise the lighting was changing, but it seemed to me the actress was actually wearing two different dresses. In some scenes it appeared red, but others blue. And the different dress in the final was definitely blue, with a blue towel.

Also whose were the feet under the TARDIS when it crash landed. It looked to me like a pair of leather shoes, but didn’t rewind and I am not really sure what I saw.

Loved all the glimpses of the rooms in the TARDIS, and squealed when I saw the cot. His age is all over the place, with no continuity so something must be going on there. Looking forward to watching it again, and haven’t done that all series, even though the magic button was a let down.

In The bells of Saint John Clara tells one of the children that “Chapter 11 is the best ..it will make you cry” and in this talks about the 11th worst whiskey ever invented. Another reference to the split/two sides of the 11th Doctor – the best and the worst?

I’ve been a long time reader of the Guardian blog but never posted, however nobody seems to have picked up on the colour of the two balloons used to demonstrate the two universes.

Did any one else think of bow ties!!!
