RE: Ian Levine, it doesn’t surprise me that he leaked this and forced the BBC’s hand into making the announcement as he is seemingly that type of bloke. Incredibly self important. He seems to have had run ins with a large number of influential Doctor Who fans over the years.

Incidentally, I searched for his tweets on Twitter and if you do that, be careful as there’s obviously a gay porn actor with the same name. Not only did I see the tweets about Doctor Who, I also saw a few pictures that I wasn’t expecting..

@craig and @phaseshift wondering why the Doctor has two watches reminded me of this quote from the Fourth Doctor after he’d told Vural he was a clock expert (in the Sontaran Experiment):

“Horologist, actually, and chronometrist. I just love clocks: atomic clocks, quartz clocks, grandfather clocks… Cuckoo clocks…”

@janetteb I suppose that this Border curse is linked to the place Moffat in Dumfries and Galloway? Which is only about 50 mins up the A74M from Carlisle. Does Stephen Moffat hail from those parts? I do love the speculation on this site.

The whole point of the Carlisle quote was that it was a joke. They were trying to express what was the opposite of bliss? (ie: something wonderful) and they came up with Carlisle (ie: something not wonderful). It was no deeper than a dig at the place in Cumbria.

Personally, I find Season 15 the worst of the Tom Baker era. The Hinchcliffe era seasons 12-14 were solid with very few poor stories. The Android Invasion sticks out as being one of those and maybe the Hand of Fear wasn’t that great (notable for Sarah leaving), but I can’t think of many other stories that I don’t like.

I’m a big fan of Tom Baker’s first season for nostalgic reasons, as it was my first season that I clearly remember watching all of (when I was 4-5), so I’m biased but to me even the Revenge of the Cybermen was pretty good. The Ark in Space and Genesis of the Daleks are probably my all time favourite stories.

Once Hinchcliffe left it went downhill, but there were some good stories under Graham Williams (Fang Rock and City of Death obviously), but most of the Key to Time season wasn’t that bad and the Ribos Operation was excellent. I even enjoy the Horns of Nimon a bit, but mainly for Graham Crowdon. But yes, it had got a bit stale.

As a kid, I remember thinking that with Season 18, this was more like the Tom Baker that I remembered of old and preferred the darker approach to the more humourous methods of the Williams era. However, at that time I was probably ready for a change of Doctor and most of the audience were.

@juniperfish My son seemed liked the Bells of St John Episode a lot (which I didn’t as much). Rings, we both found utterly bizarre, I get the general impression that he thought that it was stupid. (On 2nd viewing, I didn’t mind it as much but felt that it was fairly bonkers, with the bad Smiley faced sun to end it..)

Cold War… I didn’t get a chance to watch it with him, so all I got out of him was that he didn’t like that the Ice Warriors can suddenly take their armour off. (He’s seen Seeds of Death and the Peladon stories before).. 😀

I loved Cold War.

My intro to Doctor Who was Jon Pertwee’s last season. I can remember having nightmares about the Daleks in Death to the Daleks and also Alpha Centauri – so I watched Monster of Peladon also the Doctor’s regeneration in Planet of the Spiders strikes a chord.

As from Robot onwards, I have clearer memories of the Tom Baker era and I became a fan of Doctor Who right up until Trial of the Timelord, when I gave up watching it. Presumably teenage things got in the way at the time and I missed the entire McCoy era (until catching it on video and dvd many years later).

I was disappointed with the Movie (one that it was Americanised, but more disappointed that it was never taken up as a series). Then have been an avid viewer since 2005 with my now 11 year old son.

I’m back again, I joined then it slipped my mind for a week. I have been reading quite a few of the threads. I do love the theorising about what’s happening in the new series, will remember to bookmark this site. 😀
