Come the (delicious) cliffhanger, the Doctor’s in peril. Will K-9 come to the rescue like he usually does? Or is the metal mutt sulking because he didn’t get to tour Paris?

Interesting that the Dr says that if a Time Lord were to absorb the Time Vortex, they’d become a vengeful God.

Utopia was written as a sort of continuity-fest or Fan-‘Porn’. RTD was concerned that this would kill the ratings but he needn’t have worried.
It’s nice that we can consider it as a story in it’s own right. In that context it’s a real belter, with an interesting tale at it’s heart (even though it is largely a crib of ‘End of the Line’ as @phaseshift has said).

Sorry to rub salt in the wound but Rik Mayall was set to be the villain in the aborted 30th Anniversary Dr Who ‘The Dark Dimension’.

I always used to think he would have made a great Doctor, too. Best not to dwell on  these things…

I loved Rik Mayall in nearly everything I saw him in (maybe even in that awful ‘Merlin’ ‘movie’). One of my favourites was Grim Tales.

 

@whisht – I managed to find ‘Ah Pook’ but nothing else, I’m afraid… Tentacle animation sounds good! Oh, well….

Colin Baker was born 8 June 1943 and today celebrates his 71st birthday.
40 years ago today Tom Baker made his first Doctor Who appearance.

@janetteb    Paris is synonymous with Dr Who for me too. When I went it might as well have been a City of Death tour. The Louvre, Notre Dame…  I even stumbled upon the chateau, which had a great comic stall opposite it at the time.

The Jagaroth ship is a brilliant design. I remember seeing the model in an exhibition in Bristol and being surprised at how small it actually is.

The tenth Dr rates 1979 much more than a table wine (see tooth & claw). New face, new rules.

This location is extremely exotic to us – A ‘dirty’ weekend in Paris.
The 4th looks right at home, his look being derived from French cabaret singer, Aristide Bruant.

The Doctor demonstrates that until Parisians discover the pedestrian crossing, crossing the road is an extremely perilous affair (don’t try this at home, kids).

Romana notices that the painting has no eyebrows. So what? Tom Baker also has no eyebrows.

The Doctor is pretty determined to drink water rather than wine. Perhaps it stems from that time he was drugged in ‘The Androids of Tara’.

The 2nd Romana is one of my favourite companions, even if she is playing the part of the philistine here.

I remember watching the cliffhanger aged 5 & it imprinting itself deeply in my mind.

I suppose if there was a CGI special edition of this, the alien’s face would consist of wriggly worms…

The moment that Martha is kidnapped is very well executed.

The mood patches were actually inspired by the number coded mood controllers in the Ninth Doctor novel ‘Only Human’ by Gareth Roberts.

All these vehicles are the same which is slightly odd. Makes me think of Germany when everyone drove VW Beetles.

Right now I’m having kittens about how this couple have had kittens (not really – it’s just fun surrealism).

‘What if there’s no one out there?’

The Doctor is obviously used to drinking recycled pee-pee.

The Macra claws bashing the car window reminds me of the 456 from ‘Torchwood COE’.

That Face of Boe geezer is an obvious pinch of/homage to the 3rd Stage Guild Navigator from the film ‘Dune’.

‘You are not alone.’, has a different slant now, post ‘Day of the Doctor’.

It’s a very unusual tale and one of RTD’s best.
