I’m still thinking about Airedale Watch duties and trying to juggle the necessities of running back mid-day to let them out for a walk, or, bunking off early to do the same.  I feel I can miss the panel session on The Eleventh Hour more than any other part of the advertised programme, and this for me is the difference between the two ‘streams’ (athough they really missed a trick, didn’t they, in not naming them Red Waterfall and Green Anchor).

In either case, on whichever day, I’d miss the monster choreography class which is one of the highlights for me.  (A. Burke’s segments on the defunct Confidential were always one of my personal favourites.)

Arrrggghh!  It’s only 12 hours away and I have no idea what I’m going to do.

@bluesqueakpip – more to the point, if I get a dog-friendly B&B or hotel (both of which options are surprisingly available in central London), the rules are always that dogs cannot be left alone in the room.  I’ve checked with the ExCel organisers and only ‘assistance dogs’ are allowed in.

(I’ve contemplated arguing that my dogs are my mental health assistants – in that I’d be even more utterly bonkers without them – but I can’t sustain that argument more than 12 seconds.  By which time my boy Triton would have tried to lick someone’s head and no matter how much tooth-brushing I do, that really isn’t going to help my argument.)

Yes, I could leave them back home in North Yorkshire, but for many reasons that isn’t a going concern.

The reason I found the clip is more or less the reason @scaryb pointed out. Masses of material on the BBC Worldwide Doctor Who channel, so I try to look at it once a week and see what’s new. I have no idea for the reason for the clip, but it’s a newly produced mix. I’ve just used a clip from there on the Talons thread that I like to emphasise a point Jim raised on Leela.

It contains some unique stuff. For instance, each of the writers doing one of the Puffin books has a small feature talking about their choice of Doctor, memories, etc.

And yup, @jimthefish – my thoughts in a nutshell! (I presume that should say “everywhere trying to sell you stuff”, rather than see you stuff…?). Grr. I notice there’s no price on the limited edition DVD set yet, looks nice, but ain’t going to be cheap.

Just came across this, which, while not the same as a limited special edition DVD, is at least free! Tennant’s video diary of his last 2 wks of shooting – aw, bless! (seems to have been a very recent upload, although the actual filming is obv a bit older)

@scaryb — gah. You’re right. Fixed that now…. I think I saw somewhere that the boxset is going to cost around £60 but nothing official. There’s seems to be rather a lot of plasticky tat involved with it so I’m not really convinced that it’s worth it, unless it’s a whole lot cheaper than that. At least the Regenerations boxset has got that funky book with it…

Yup, sounds about right for a “limited edition”

BBC are doing well out the fans this year, even if the packaging and contents for most do look good quality. Would be nice to see it working the other way at some point. We don’t even get a new series till next summer (Now that wouldn’t be so they can sell more DVD packages this year would it??  No wonder some of us have doubts about the BBC’s long term commitment to the programme. Cynical…?  Me..? I’m Scottish remember – cynicism comes with our daily deep fried Mars bars!)

See the 50th @the Excel is sold out completely now – that’s a LOT of dosh in 2 days (to BBC Worldwide).  Only 1 come up on eBay so far!

But at least we can make our own entertainment in here 🙂

@scaryb – (and @craig @bluesqueakpip @juniperfish **) : I have a hotel booking in Hampstead (well, as much as I look forward to meeting up with y’all, a weekend break in London was always going to be about me ‘n The Airedales visiting our favourite former stomping grounds, Hampstead Heath).

I suspect there might be a smoker or two amongst our ranks so a pub with a back garden would be best, but I hear your worries my Scary friend about end-of-November weather.  It won’t be like it is tonight (hot, hot, drearily and continually TOO HOT!); but we can hope for, at least, no rain.  Or, a central London pub with a proper smoking shelter and/or at least generously-sized umbrellas over the tables.

**  I put your monikers at the top because there is an issue with burying references too far into one’s comment – they don’t generate ‘mentions’.  @craig, this is something I’m still researching, but I need a pointer from you on whether it’s more likely to be bbPress, or BuddyPress.

@scaryb  Really enjoyed watching Tennant’s video diary. Nice to see, (yet again) just how he inhabited the role, emotionally. I almost shed a tear too. OH and I hope you won’t mind if I point the finger of blame in your direction when my partner complains about today’s internet hit. 🙂 I think that must have put us back in the red but it was well worth it.

The next best thing to being able to attend the convention in London is hearing the stories if you lucky few who are going, Glad that you were all able to get tickets. I hope there will be photos posted somewhere. (including the Airedales running on Hampstead Heath as I am already picturing them) Only about four months to go…

I’m not sure how many members here are familiar with the website SF Debris…it’s essentially an ‘all things sci-fi’ review and criticism VLOG. Over the years, the owner Charles Sonnenburg has dug deeply into BG Dr. Who…consisting mostly of (but not limited to) the Hartnell and Troughton stories. He’s also looked at AG episodes as well, but not in as much detail.

I would highly suggest people here take a look at his work…sometimes funny, sometimes sad (from the perspective of a fan trying to understand the phenomenon of the 100+ missing episodes in his ‘Lost in Time: Wiped, Junked, but not Forgotten’ videos), but always informative and fun.

In February of this year, he created a 2 part examination of the 10th anniversary episode ‘The Three Doctors’. You should take a look at it!

You have obviously never been to Yorkshire.  I have not one, not two, but three pubs within walking distance, all of which have a real, log-burning fireplace.

Not at this time of year, of course!   (I realise you’re opposite to us, hence your yearning for a real fire.)  But trust me, there are plenty of pubs still in England with that old home feeling you expats crave.  🙂

Having worked on a cruise ship in the Caribbean (looong story), I know that the guests of honour have the whole week to enjoy their holiday – they’re severely sequestered from the rest of the passengers – and they have approximately 1 or 2 hours in the entire week when they have to ‘work’.  Nice paycheque for some.

@Shazzbot Carole, Frazer and Sylvester all worked for the BBC in the days when payment was strictly dependent on how often you’d worked for them before and the level of part you were playing. I suspect that they ended up being paid considerably less than the modern Doctors and Companions – and even considerably less than they’d have earned had Doctor Who been an ITV show.

Sylvester did once say that the original pay was relatively low, but the repeat fees were rather nice.  😉

I meant no denigration of Doctor Who cast members for doing this kind of programme promotion and getting a very nice Caribbean cruise out of the deal as well.

I very badly tried to point out that the people who do these things get a quite lovely and pampered holiday which, as odd as it is to think on a cruise ship (being such an extremely limited physical environment), is more ‘safe’ for them from hordes of tabloid photographers and screaming fans than one might initially think.  AND they get paid.  Who wouldn’t want such a lovely working holiday? 🙂

It’s worth checking out. It has it’s moments and it’s take on organised fandom ia particularly well observed, while not being overly “sneering” at the very concept. You can pick up the DVD for low price as it’s been on for a while (I saw it in Morrisons for about £3.99.

I would hope the cruise organisers are paying their special guests more than they paid the web page designers. 🙂

Looks like there won’t be much skiving for the actors on the cruise. They’re expected to mix with the punters, including the tourist trips and dinner, and they get to be part of the video that gets made from a script put together in the workshops. Lucky them 😉

Apparently JNT was a regular in the earlier days of it. Now that could’ve been really sleazy.

Am assuming it’s well enough paid as Sylvester is a regular. And PS to Bluesqueakpip’s comment about actors’ fees – in the case of actors who have become associated with a character it also represents the work they did in creating and establishing the character in the first place.

Right, off to rest my eyes, that’s enough retro-websites for now 😎
