Can I complain one more time that we here in the UK have so far had nada, nowt, diddly-squat, f-all, zilch, zippo, jack sh*t.  🙁

Hi @Shazzbot – I’ve actually posted the songs on that particular page as links rather than embedded yootoob videos, so it should load ok. Just one embed on the whole page.

Now, I think that fewer people will bother clicking links rather than embedded videos, but I did think that if I was gonna smother a post with songs, it’d defeat the object if there were a ton of video embeds to navigate and download.

Can’t promise though that I won’t embed a video in future though, but so far, that page is ok (just use the Recent posts link).

as for the beeb…. I’m wondering whether all the recent years’ turmoil meant that maybe there weren’t the right people in place for sign-offs of Who projects… but that’s really just me making excuses on their behalf. Unlike others here, I have no idea about commissioning and stuff.

I hope they make up for the lack of on air material by publishing some nice big, newsy books on Dr Who.  It does rather seem as though their idea of celebrating the anniversary is to put out loads of merchandising to bleed our bank accounts. Well mine anyway. I’m a sucker for merchandising especially it is Who related. (Reaches for Dalek coffee mug.)

Why do I think its a lovable show?

Well, I think everyone loves it so much because it is so different from other shows. It captures our attention with its ‘edge of your seat’ stories, but it also captures your heart for the characters in the show. Especially the Doctor.

Well, what I think that captured me into the show was the Doctor’s love for traveling, not staying in one boring place, and love for any creature.

My Doctor? If I me David Tennant… I think I would cry. Unlike girls that cry over boy bands, I would cry a river for David Tennant and hug him until I can’t stand it no more!!

If anyone likes listening to audiobooks, the book depository have a comp going to win 50 Dr Who ones, tell them how many episodes the beeb deleted in the 70’s.  Comments suggest most people are googling answer, surely someone here has the right answer locked away in the deeply sorrowful 2.4% 0f their brain they try to block access to.  Am not asking for the answer, as have no interest in audio books, and my sporadic presence here can be accounted for by working nights which is messing with my timey whimey sense of self

Not sure if this is the right forum in which to post this, so please correct me/move it as necessary.  Some fan over on one of the Livejournal Who groups watched all the episodes and categorized the uses of the sonic screwdriver in each:

I have completed the scrubbing of all the Doctor Who, Torchwood, and Sarah Jane Adventures and have a final sonic use total. This includes all sonic screwdrivers, Liz Shaw’s door opener, Gwen’s Gizmo, Mrs. Wormwood’s phonic ring, River’s screwdriver, Romana’s screwdriver, Jack’s sonic blaster, Sarah Jane’s sonic lipstick, Toshiko’s sonic modulator, Ms. Foster’s sonic pen, and old Amy’s sonic probe. It does not count the Master’s laser screwdriver cause, well it wasn’t a sonic device.

The grand total is 790 uses up to, and including, The Name of the Doctor. I am now categorizing all the uses as closely to real world science as possible which means that “open door” is not a function of the screwdriver, it is merely the end result. The function would be “how” that door was open. Think about this. The Fourth Doctor opens a door in City of Death. It is a simple lock on a shop door which is nothing more and a mechanical mechanism.Is that the same as when the Fourth Doctor open a door in The Planet of Evil where the door was a powered door? No, that’s two different functions. The first was mechanical and the second was electro-mechanical. The end result is the same, the door gets open. And so that’s how this is proceeding.

The researcher has made some charts: a weighted network of uses and a list of sonic uses by writer, and undoubtedly has more to come.

The biggest hit they’ve had in decades, gives them an international profile that no other show could and swells their coffers with megabucks in merchandising and yet the prevailing attitude from the suits is still sniffy ‘m’eh, we’d much rather not make this. Can we sabotage it now, please?’

It definitely makes me think that the reason why the anniversary year is being so, well, shit is because now that there’s nothing but apathy bordering on antagonism to the show from the PTBs now…

Oh, really?  ‘market research’?  That means they had lunch with their Mum or something.  The explosion of alternate-media Who related things (books, comics, audio plays, etc) in the Wilderness Years surely was nothing BUT a ‘desire to see it’.   The BBC have a lot of good points but they have a massive black spot in their vision when it comes to Doctor Who.  It’s almost like it’s personal with them.

@wolfweed and @shazzbot — the thing that gets me about Grade is that he seems to think that people are more interested in that fag end of the 1960s Sunday Night at the Palladium bollocks that he personally finds so fascinating. But the evidence is that there is about 10 times more interest in Who than there is in that these days…

The suits definitely have a blind spot when it comes to the show. Tom Baker must have shagged Michael Grade’s hamster at some point.

This is an odd one, so I’ll pop it here and ask if anyone knows what it’s for. I’m guessing it’s some kind of viral marketing for something (maybe the appearance by Tom Baker at the 50th) in which case I’m doing what I’m expected to and spreading it around. What a fool I am.

It’s official BBC Worldwide with no description. Just #fourth, and comprising dialogue from the Baker era over pictures of companions and stuff. It seems tailor made for speculation though, with the lingering “Don’t forget about me”. Strange.

@phaseshift – actually, it’s ‘Don’t you forget me’.  … Where did you find that clip?  Is there to be a release (re-release?) of the Fourth Doctor’s reign?  Or is this some sort of left-field teaser that Tom Baker will have a pertinent part to play in this the 50th anniversary year?

@scaryb – When I joined in April, I was member 87.  And three months later, we’re over 400.  @craig has certainly done his work on SEO (search engine optimisation) but of course we can’t forget our resident Marketing Whore @phaseshift who tirelessly inserts links to this site from the Guardian.  🙂
