Have been looking at the wonderful images of the Daleks from the 50th (many thanks indeed @wolfweed) and agree with @janetteb that this is Gallifrey, and this is the Time War. And as I think about it more and more, I wonder (just like Asylum of the Daleks when Jenna Coleman’s appearance was a complete surprise to everyone) whether they have managed to keep another appearance totally under wraps.

If so, who might it be? Well, it now seems increasingly obvious that the Hurt Doctor is the the Doctor (who is not allowed to bear the name of Doctor) who followed…Oh dear…

POTENTIAL SPOILER (for the handful of people on the planet reading this blog who haven’t been, well…reading this blog)

…Paul McGann’s Doctor. If so, how do you (as a scriptwriter) locate Hurt to the audience without showing where he came from? And by the audience, I do not mean enthusiasts like us who know just about everything to do with Who lore, but to Who fans who know some Who lore, but only some? Or to the wider audience? Well, perhaps by SHOWING where the Hurt Doctor came from. Which means (after a long, long, ramble) might there be a chance that we will finally see Paul McGann’s Doctor actually integrated into the show?

Maybe not, but…they did manage to keep Jenna Coleman’s appearance in Asylum as a total surprise….

Some great interviews – loved the Matt/Jenna/Moff (oops – he gets spikey when it’s Matt, Jenna and… not Steven!) one (from Sat I think). Some great banter.  I also loved how COMPLETELY poker faced Moffat is when interviewed on his own re 50th, new Dr etc

Nice spot on the possible Gallifrey setting @janetteb (Those dalek pics look great, don’t they. You can’t grudge them daleks for the 50th. Can feel a bonkers theory or 2 coming on!!)

PS For anyone worried that the dalek pics are spoilery – they’re everywhere – you could only avoid them by staying off the net

@blenkinsopthebrave and @scaryb – this is speculation, not spoilers. When I was checking out the convention appearances of the ‘older’ Doctors for availability during filming dates, Paul McGann wasn’t attending precisely the same conventions as Sylvester and Colin. He missed one out.

Would love to see McGann regenerate. I think he (the actor) deserves an appearance in “Who proper” after all the work he has done on Big Finish productions and the convention circuits. Fingers crossed @blenkinsopthebrave and @bluesqueakpip are right.

@scaryb. agreed the images are not spoilery. When I first saw the pic on the Guardian this morning I felt as though I already knew that there would be Daleks. We could hardly have expected a Dr Who fiftieth without the most iconic enemy.

Re Paul McGann. Let’s hope so. Its much easier for them to keep the secret when there is no outside studio shooting. They have been pretty good at keeping these secrets after all. They would have known that John Hurt was going to be seen on location in advance so it was an easy secret to give away. Whilst Steven Moffat has made it clear that we have no hope in seeing and pre-David Tennant Doctor we also no he’s been lying his teeth off for ages. Anything remains possible on that front if it remains improbable.

So there I was, happily working my through @wolfweed‘s Comic con clips, and thinking “that’s a pretty major thing for our wee Dr Who to be making what looks like a pretty big impact at” and feeling kinda proud (not to mention being excited about the pics and the propect of seeing the trailer (hopefully sooner rather than later 😉 but basically excited that things seem to be coming together, and only another month to wait  till the BBC’s campaign really starts to kick ass (stupid to launch anything in July/Aug))… and then I clicked on @jimthefish‘s Radio Times link – the comments are even worse! ARSE fans on the rampage.

Yeah – it does a bit.

I can’t get over-excited about 2000 fans seeing a trailer in America for an event that will be broadcast first in the UK. I can easily understand why Worldwide want to promote the show in the US – it has crested an wave of interest in the last few years that is unheard of really, and they are throwing a lot of money at it themselves, which doesn’t derive from the licence fee. As co-funders I can see the argument that they should a least have a couple of exclusives (and this is very exclusive people wise) in their own territory.

I’m with @scaryb in that you’d think that fans would be delighted that over a three day event with lots of major shows in attendance, and with massive films (Superman v Batman) being announced, the most internet column inches written and a major source of excitement would be their favourite show. They seem to prefer it small, provincial, and probably doomed to failure.

A big “HELLO” to all. This is my first official post (I did post a brief reminder about the proms but I’m not counting that!).

Re: the “Radio Times” article, I thought most of the comments were extremely ARSEy, however some of the commentators did make a fair point about DW being funded by the British taxpayer via the licence fee so it only seems fair that the British viewers got to see the trailer first or at least the Beeb could’ve put it on their website the following day.

“Adventures In Time And Space” won’t be shown until November and it seems that the TV broadcast of the Proms probably won’t be until November either. Would it have hurt the BBC that much to show us something in this (so far) very ‘dry’ anniversary year? It seems that in America, Australia and other parts of the world they’ve had oodles of Who related material but all we’ve had is the Prom (which, admittedly, I enjoyed (in fact I’m listening to it again as I type))  and three (impressive) Dalek photos.

 I admit, I did have a chuckle when Stephen Kelly (the RT article’s writer) made mention of “angry sense of entitlement”. Not quite the term used here but it made me wonder if he reads these comments.

I hope I haven’t come across as being too ARSEy myself but if I have please trust me, I’m not! I see myself as being just an ordinary, if frustrated, fan.

Finally, ScaryB’s quite right, we should all be proud that America (and in fact the rest of the world) love this “wee little” show as much as we do.

Patience everyone! As @phaseshift says, it’s not like anyone gets to see the actual show before us 😉  Yes they could have put it on the web the next day, but who knows – maybe there’s an exclusivity clause in the CC contract. Maybe they want to do build the UK public campaign properly from September. (I’m back to being positve for now)

Meanwhile Time Magazine listed our fav show as the no 2 highlight at ComicCon (along with Hunger Games and after Superman v Batman).  That’s pretty good for a 50 yr old UK TV show. Who’d’ve predicted that in 1990?! 😀

@fatmaninabox — welcome… I can kind of see the licence fee argument. But Who these days does also get funding from BBC America and Worldwide takes a hefty interest as well, so I’m not sure it’s all as simple as that.

I do share your slight frustration at just how low-key this anniversary year is but would echo @scaryb‘s point. The show just stepped up to the plate with the major league players and more than held its own. We should all be damn proud of that…

The trailers will come. I’d be surprised if we don’t see some movement on that score in the next week or so…

I think the people complaining don’t get the point of Comic Con – while I don’t know if it’s in the contract, I know everyone there has something new and exciting to announce or show at their panel. The Who production team sensibly went for an exciting trailer. When the ruddy trailer gets shown in the UK is up to the BBC, not BBC Worldwide.

As to one of the RT commentators saying that every other film/show releases the trailer on the web the day after – really? Because we certainly didn’t get to see The Hobbit footage for ages after Comic Con 2012. In fact, I think I had to go and watch the film 😀

@MadScientist72 – I’m retracting my little rant (#14313). I’d read about all these wonderful events on various other sites, sites which I’ve since realised are the hunting grounds for trolls, ARSEs and FAN(tasists?). I don’t think I’ll be making that mistake again 😳

@thommck, Your eleven year old might enjoy the cosplay. Mine love “fancy dress” but then so do both their parents, 🙂 I didn’t know the BBC had studios at Elstree. I lived just down the road many years ago. I would have been dalek hunting had I known. One of my youthful ambitions was to be a dalek operator.

The TV series they are piloting sounds rather interesting.

Further to was it worth doing SD Comic Con discussions (assuming the beneefit is raising profile etc), this is a video clip by SDCC of “the best cosplayers over the weekend” which includes 3 Doctors at 2.14 (-2.15, LOL). And has been viewed over 400,000 times. I recommend turning down the sound, but some of the costumes are seriously impressive. And will no doubt keep the macho boys (and some of the girls) amongst us happy 😉

@thommmck Grab your 11 yo, some glue and some paint (or whatever it takes to make a costume!) and get down there, LOL. The official Dr Who site has masks you can download and print out if that helps. Although he may want his face showing if he’s going ot be on TV; but it’d be a good place to start for inspiration. (Re the video in my last post – some serious cosplay going on there, but the Doctor can be done really simply, and is still instantly recognisable)

Oh, I’m completely with you on it’s STILL MONTHS till November and I’ve been known to have a rant or two about the lack of things so far this year (see @wolfweed‘s Celebration blog). But for now I’m being positive, and hoping for a lot more stuff (on TV) from Sept on. I also think it’s important to think of the BBC and the DW production team as separate, tho connected, entities (like stern parents and brilliant but slightly wayward child), re pointing fingers.

The BBC are selling the Doctor 4 scarf which makes his costume easy to replicate. I was going to do a Doctor costume for my youngest last year but was too lazy to knit the scarf.  Now I don’t have to. 🙂 I do love merchandising.  Tennant or Smith are both easy to do. If you eleven year old is of a female persuasion, (I jsut tend to think boys because I have three of them) an Amy or Clara costume. The later is perhaps more appropriate for an eleven year old however there were several “Amys” at the junior school book week costume parade a few years ago.

But, joking aside, I wonder how many people have a vision of Comic Con attendees as sad lonely middle-aged single guys for whom this weekend is their annual time out of their mother’s basement.  It was great to see so many couples, and people of all ages.

That guy with the massive wingspan certainly put a lot into his costume.  Lucky for him the ceilings were so high.

I think some of those, ahem, fronts are part of the costume rather than being real or surgically enhanced. It’s quite an easy trick to pull off if the costume also has a neck band of some sort, and helps create a more realistic (or unrealistic, depending on your point of view) comic book / anime heroine look.

Now, how did we get to discussing breasts on this forum? 😕
