Catfish and the Bottlemen are getting a lot of buzz here now. Name sounds American, is actually derived from an Aussie street performer, so naturally they are Welsh.

@arbutus

Yeah – I was slightly stymied by the attack of the bots. Again.

@puroandson

Go tilt at those windmills!

@puroandson

That’s brilliant news – Aussie soccer gets shown over here on BT Sport.

(@arbutus is in full finger-chewing mode as the Blue Jays kick open the door of Last Chance Saloon)

(EDIT: Ooh, sorry – even as I typed, the door slammed shut.)

We bought our boys matching suits for their Aunt’s wedding in Istanbul when they were 11, 9 and 5 years of age. We were in Sweden at the time and the Swedes being very sensible people. (@puroandson One of those rare places where it does seem as though people are getting smarter) don’t dress children in formal wear so had difficulty finding suits…[Read more]

The Indians appear to be doing to the Jays what they did to the Red Sox. Still, at least the Sox’ll get Encarnation next year…

As @pedant indicated, ‘pulling’, as in ‘pulling a pint’ refers, in the strictest sense, to the process by which non-pressurised ale is drawn or syphoned up from the casks to taps at the bar.  This is done by means of a device known as a beer engine which consists essentially of an air-tight piston chamber operated by thos…[Read more]

@arbutus  You are right of course ,it was Rooster Cogburn. Thanks. @puroandson  I do drink a lot of coffee.Way too much , far too much…..but I do love it so.

Just heard that the Jays lost again. (baseball)

@arbutus and @puroandson   The bar I worked in had been a pub for a long time and had a walk-in cooler in the basement where the kegs were kept. but they were the kind that was under pressure. I loved that room on hot days and volunteered to change the kegs or throw up soda or bottled beer.

Katherine Hepburn is also one of my all time f…[Read more]

Ah, the winter of 1962-63, the coldest of the 20th century in the UK, and one of the coldest on record and another landmark in my memory, when in some places even the water mains froze and water had to be brought round in bowsers.  A whisky mac would definitely have been in order.

It was my second term at university in Edinburgh and I…[Read more]

@Puroandson
well….. thanks for that ditty on zombies. I erm, may give the film a miss, but probably my loss.
[ahem]
I’m not a zombies fan if I’m honest, especially the zombies who walk around in the morning on their way to work staring at their phones and not avoiding people as they walk until the last moment (if then).
Mobiles have actually…[Read more]

hey @Arbutus and @Blenkinsopthebrave @puroandson – glad you liked it.
And Arbutus (and anyone else) – you can always ping to my pong.

;¬)

and it turns out I have two superpowers after all – rolling my tongue and burping on cue.
(As you’d imagine, both have taken me far and shaped my life).

And the talk of Spring set me off…[Read more]

Here is a bit of context to @whisht‘s wonderful post.

The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah band was created by a group of art school students in the 60s, with the premise of satirizing (and simultaneously celebrating) pop music. The principal involved was Vivian Stanshall, an amazing artist and self made eccentric, who produced a wonderful body of…[Read more]

I love these few weeks when the year is on the cusp of Autumn, especially when the weather is as perfect as it has been here for the past few days. Last week it was unseasonably hot, with high humidity and temperatures in the high 20s to low 30s C.  Now the weather is calm, with hazy sunshine and t…[Read more]

Hey @Arbutus – nice bit of jazz!

Or should I say niiiiiiiiiiiicccce.

And that was a version of Wheel’s on Fire I hadn’t heard so that was good.

Anyway, some wonderful discussions recently on these threads about Mind Palaces.
And then someone mentioned the Goons.
Obviously, the intersection of those two topics can only be one…[Read more]

@arbutus  “Catch Me” is a good pic, too.  And Ab-Fab is something my husband and I used to watch with delight and quote lines from, as my whole family used to do with the Goon Show!

@arbutus  @ichabod   Poor Donna was robbed of her experiences by a brash ,impulsive Doctor who does the first thing he can think of to save her ,despite her tearful protests. He doesn’t listen to Donna, he knows what is best for her. In his defence he was fighting the clock as Donna’s brain  was already burning up. He still does it and has to dea…[Read more]

@arbutus — I agree that the Donna Solution (! if we can call it that) was awful; on the other hand, look what an excellent stimulus it was to the beauty of “Hell Bent”, how many years later?  The Doctor tries to do a Donna, is rebuked in spades by Clara, and *bang* — right before our eyes, the character of the Doctor grows, because this time he…[Read more]

The trick is, indeed, to foster a wide range of tastes. Life is more interesting when you find yourself unexpectedly absorbed in an off-the-beaten track discovery.

But also, make sure there is room for bubble gum. I will happily watch a bunch of episodes of Gilmore Girls because, despite sparky and quick-fire dialogue…[Read more]

@Arbutus The boys camping trip sounds truely wonderful despite the discomforts and some level of discomfort is essential in all adventures otherwise you would not know you were having an adventure. Good luck with training your rescue cat to be diurnal. Our cat has to be shut in the back of the house at night so he doesn’t disturb us as I got tired…[Read more]
