Your friend Debby is an idiot who can’t be bothered to do research.
Here is a proper analysis of the floods, with particular reference to the role of dredging.
The immediate causes of which were:
- A month’s rain in about three days (which accumulated, since such incidents are getting more common thanks to climate change);
- The failure of…

What your friend is talking about is river dredging. There are indeed people who think that dredging rivers would have avoided or eased the effects of the big floods of 2014 and, to a lesser extend, of December 2015.
However, there are also quite a lot of people opposing this view, our Environment Agency among them. I refer you to this…[Read more]

Yes, I’ve certainly heard that argument: I’m not qualified to know whether there’s any basis in fact. The EU itself has flatly denied it and stated that the cause of recent serious floods is the record rainfall. It certainly seems reasonable that record rainfall might cause floods.
However, the local argument is that they’ve had flood…[Read more]

we’re still better off than the UK which is not designed for large scale farming -hence owner farmers voting Remain in large majority (because the EU protected them)
Not quite. *Tenant* farmers voted Leave – they object to all those environmental regulations but have no stake in the underlying value of the business. Owner-farmers m…[Read more]

@lisa @pedant Speaking from a Canadian point of view, I would have thought that it isn’t so much a case of other countries being completely unwilling to do business with Britain, but more an acceptance (or not) of geographic and economic reality. Canada spent a number of years trying to diversify trade after running into problems deali…[Read more]

That would be the Mediterranean countries, not one of which wants to leave the EU?
You (manifestly) know nothing about the UK economy.

@ichabod @puroandson @lisa Thank you, it’s been a mess. My bank is doing a good job going after the group, but still a hassle which drove me to comfort eating and wine, the later being more severe for a ballet dancer and displays the depth of my stress. The company that stole it has a legitimate looking front, but turns out to be a group that s…[Read more]

Well, given that one of them is Germany they clearly aren’t (for every Germany there is a France). And anybody who does not realise that Germany is very keen to grab its share of London’s capital markets and all of our insurance trade (ie Lloyd’s of London) is tragically ill-informed. Or, as is the case with Murdoch-owned Dow…[Read more]

I’m just saying you shouldn’t let the EU
We have no cards to play(1).
Also,the EU has/is syphoning huge sums of money out of the UK and then giving it almost all away in the form of grants to multi national companies to move out of the UK for cheaper labor.
This is complete nonsense.
The EU rebuilt Manchester after the devastation of an…[Read more]

I think the UK wants to just control the free movement more. Why shouldn’t that happen?
Free movement of labour is a condition of access to the Single Market (AS IS acceptence to competition law AND paying for access). If we end up in either the European Economic Area or The European Free Trade Association we will have to abide by these…[Read more]

@Mersey — @XA24 is based in the UK and so is very much directly involved/affected by the omnishambles that is Brexit. And no, @lisa, I don’t remotely think that the EU will be inclined to offer England a deal. The prevailing attitude seems to be ‘go and go now’. And you can’t blame them on top of the Brexit vote you have Farage trotting off to…[Read more]

There’s nothing incendiary in my comment. As CNBC is an american television channel and the only american politician who supports Brexit is Donald Trump and the article linked by @lisa is in favour of Brexit I assumed that it’s author shares some beliefs with Donald Trump.
I read the article and shared my reservations. That’s far…[Read more]

@lisa My point was that it’s irrelevant for EU if GB is or isn’t the part of NATO. If you think that such issues as free movement and other EU rules can be negotiable why they are not for Norway and Switzerland? Rules are rules. If they make any concessions to GB other countries will ask for more for them. And you forget that other EU members want…[Read more]

@lisa I bet the author supports Donald Trump. It’s completely irrelevant that GB is the member of NATO. Turkey has the second after USA army in NATO and it’s not a mamber of EU. Today Angela Merkel said that there will bo no single market access without free movement and EU regulations in GB.

Hi @Lisa – apologies for late reply (well, its 1am for me!).
A really good question on your part.
We probably do put in more than we take out. That’s kind of the slightly-Socialist sensibility that the EU is set up for (ie the strong look after the weak when necessary).
That’s massively simplistic on my part, and I’m sure I’ve said it clumsily.…[Read more] -

@lisa Thanks!
I wonder if hardcore punk fans would argue that the Clash is not punk enough, because people like me like them? 🙂
That’s a great Bowie/Pop track, (I love the movie clips). Something about the quality of Bowie’s voice marries amazingly well with Iggy’s edgy sound. Thanks for posting!
