Just thinking, this might have been mentioned but throwing it out anyway on why The Fisher King as the name for the bad guy – Ravens are considered psychopomps and Bran (I remember the connection between Bran the Blessed and The Fisher King has been discussed) means ‘raven’.

Also, the mural is interesting as it clearly depicts The Fisher King as a serpent which makes me think of Mayan mythology around the feathered serpent Quetzalcoatl. It’s also not the first serpent we’ve seen this year and serpents are associated with rebirth – something else we’ve also seen.

Anyway, just semi-random musings…

@craig I’d have thought three and a half would have been young enough not to have an emotional attachment! I think it was the scarf I was attached given that I probably didn’t have a clue what was going on. Certainly from my simultaneously hazy and clear memory of Castrovalva I really didn’t understand anything that was happening – which is one of the fun things about rewatching old episodes, the things that suddenly make sense, the references I get now that went over my head then.

@purofilion must admit I loved Tennant, but I’m not a fan of Rose or the romance. Or quite a few of the stories. Of his companions I liked Donna best – no romance, no unrequited love, no mooning about, plus I actually did like her despite thinking I wouldn’t because I’m not a fan of Catherine Tate.

Hope the Boy Ilion is enjoying his trip to Middle Earth. First book I ever read to my little boy was Tolkien, but he was only a few weeks old at the time!

@purofilion Yes, there were rules but to a greater or lesser extent, but some you had to go very far (or just get on the wrong side of certain people) to get banned, some would involve a lot of bitchy bickering that would get very wearing or would be really unwelcoming to newcomers.

The tarot forum despite being huge was generally a very friendly place and there is a gaming forum which sort of spun off from another gaming forum and which is a small, cosy place (although get’s angsty about that sometimes and wonders how to get more people in) with people my husband, and I to a lesser extent, have been chatting to online for years.

Yes, I’m a huge Tolkien fan 😀 I tend to mostly avoid related forums though – used to post on the Tolkien Newsgroups in the time before forums. Got a bit singed in some flame wars then driven out by the complete negativity surrounding the films and hostility to anyone who dared say they liked them in any way.

Here seems more… civilised? than a lot of places online. From what I’ve seen people disagree with each other and it’s ok. Reasons are given, points debated but ultimately it’s ok to dislike (or like) something.

I loved the whole of last season overall – of course there were episodes I liked more than others, and I’m not a fan of Robot of Sherwood though even that had bits that I liked (the spoon fight!) – but I enjoyed it more than any season since it came back. This year is shaping up to be the same. Part of it must be that I absolutely love Capaldi as the Doctor, and haven’t had the problems that some others have had with his version – I never felt that he was cold, callous, uncaring etc. or un-Doctorlike. He is about as Doctorish as it’s possible to get for me and just seemed right straight away. I keep saying it in the hope that it’s true – but I think he might really be the Doctor 😀

To paraphrase what the Doctor said in this episode, he’s talking to Clara when he’s seen her dead on a slab. He’s seeing her as a ghost. That actually ties in with Hide, when Clara points out that everyone is a ghost to the Doctor, because he’s time-travelled past all their lifetimes.

@bluesqueakpip and with The Magicians Apprentice where despite the big deal made over the Doctor’s last day when Clara said ‘which one of us is dying’ and the Doctor hugged my immediate thought was ‘Clara is’.

@blenkinsopthebrave  I’m hoping that ends up as being a clue of some kind. Didn’t it look like a woman (or at least somebody in a dress/skirt) in the serpents mouth? So could be something to do with Clara’s fate.

@purofilion it’s supposed to be my real name translated into elvish. I use it occasionally when I’m bored of the usual online name I use, ilweran, which is also elvish and means ‘rainbow’.

I only lurked for a couple of weeks and mainly because this forum is quite different to other forums I’ve posted on – mainly videogame, Tolkien or tarot related and much more of a free for all than here!

I was brought up on Tolkien, Douglas Adams, and first of all Doctor Who – I don’t remember a time before Doctor Who, though my earliest Doctor Who related memory is just a man with curly hair and a long scarf. I was upset when he died and needed to be reassured that this new bloke was really still the Doctor. I was about three and a half.

Castrovalva is the first story I remember, though having re-watched it a couple of years ago I found I had managed to completely forget about the existence of Adric. I know some would argue that’s no bad thing…

After that it’s Snakedance. Scared the life out of me. Never mind Daleks – talking snake skulls and a possessed Tegan kept me awake at night.

Picks up a bit then until Caves of Androzani and The Twin Dilemma which we had recorded and my sister and I watched them over and over and over…. knowing now of the general negative view of The Twin Dilemma I think it’s possible I’ve seen it more times than anyone else on the planet.

Didn’t mind Colin Baker, loved McCoy. Could have done without Mel and her screaming, and wished she’d been finished off with that toasting fork in Paradise Towers (did I imagine complaints about that scene on Points of View?). Loved Ace.

New series, I loved Tennant though thought he was let down with some of his stories.

Absolutely adore Capaldi. He is so good I strongly suspect he might really be the Doctor 😀 I was overjoyed this year to finally stumble across some filming – I’m Welsh.  A bit of Amy’s Choice was filmed up the road from my parents, the cafe scene in Death in Heaven was filmed minutes from where I work on a day I don’t work. And so on. It was getting embarrassing. – if finding them filming in the centre of Cardiff counts as stumbling upon something. Capaldi will be wearing a very nice jacket later in the series and I went back to work and squeed (is that a word?) a lot and got a Pertwee era fan joining in as well. We both really liked the jacket.

@arbutus My poor husband has had to put up with enough Tolkien related rants (he does insist on playing video games set in Middle earth where they just make stuff up) and long detailed explanations of obscure bits of the mythology, that with Doctor Who I restrain myself to just asking if he’s enjoyed the episode – a discussion comparing 10s actions in Waters of Mars and 12s in Kill the Moon might be unfair 🙂 I have checked out the Kill the Moon thread and was pleased it had been mentioned there, not sure I need to add anything but might do, perhaps after a rewatch.

Welcome, @winston and @mirime! I too was a long time lurker, only breaking silence after the 50th anniversary, when a particularly impressive post impelled me to give it a like. I had never posted on a fan site before (still don’t, except here), but this one is fun as people are very clever and funny, as well as being polite to one another! I feel as if I have made some nice friends here.

Thank you @arbutus, it certainly seems likes one of the nicer corners of the internet here and I do try and stay in the friendlier bits these days. I have posted on forums (and newsgroups back in the 90’s) on other things I’m a fan of, but never Doctor Who – except for the Guardian. I’ve been watching Doctor Who all my life, my parents are fans so I got indoctrinated early, but since last year there has been so much to talk about and think about and nobody in real life to wave my arms at and go ‘but, but, but….’ or discuss my theory that all the Clara’s are Claricles (that’s what you call them here, right?), or comparisons between Waters of Mars and Kill the Moon and so on.

Hello *waves* another new person here, though I have already posted twice so not completely new.

Got pointed in this direction by The Guardian blog where I post as ilweran – I recognise some people from there, I decided to have a different name here as I was bored of being ilweran. Both names are Tolkien related in case anyone is wondering – I have a major Tolkien obsession.

I think I must be one of the ‘missing millions’ that I’ve seen brought up when people over there have been talking about ratings as I have a little boy who is two and a half now who generally prevents me from watching ‘live’ – very frustrating given how good Doctor Who is at the moment (IMO of course 😉 ) and how much there is to think about and discuss.

Loving the discussion on tarot related stuff, though I’m more of a collector than a reader and I seem to have erased a lot of what I did know to make room for baby stuff – or it could have something to do with the sleep deprivation and lack of time.

Good to meet you all, looking forward to reading more bonkers theories – and maybe contributing 🙂

If the Doctor’s ghost was a hologram, how did it interact with matter (opening the Faraday cage)- possibly it didn’t, and rather the sonic sent a message for the cage to be opened at that time? But then, why did he program it to open the cage and let out the ghosts, it wasn’t required for his plan was it? I guess it made his ghost more believable and realistic, but it’s a bit of a risk…

@Supernumerary – The Doctor programmed it to open the cage because he saw that it opened the cage.

The outcome of opening the cage was that Clara and the other two went in the Faraday cage and were protected from O’Donnell’s ghost when it showed up.

@Supernumerary re. programming the hologram.  The Doctor said it was the sonic sunglasses and that they connected to the bases wifi when the stasis pod thing was brought in.
