humiliated by bad writing.
You keep muttering darkly about the bad writing – and I think we’re all agreed that this was not the best of Russell’s scripts. Actually, I’m wondering if there were worse ones? By Russell, I mean – I think we could come up with worse episodes.
However, there’s a motto about scripts in the entertainment…[Read more]

First and third. Plus cameos in other episodes of both SJA and Doctor Who.
Technically the Slitheen in Series 3 of SJA were the Blatheen, but I’m not even going to attempt to spell the name of their race, rather than their family. 🙂 Russell T. has a love of long, convoluted alien names.
If you want to look for the seriously…[Read more]

Definitely not one of RTD’s best. So far I’ve got through Aliens of London – I’ll comment on World War Three when I have time. I will say that I partly blame this two-parter for my not watching Dalek or The Long Game on broadcast – but the other part was not liking Christopher Eccleston’s Doctor. He’s great at the angst; but he’s not got a very…[Read more]

@TheKrynoidMan @JanetteB I tend to agree on the whole. I’ve followed a few of the links put up by people seeking support for their bids on the site, and while I can see they’ve put some work in, the standard of recognition for the custom figures is small. When it comes to the creatures, the problem only gets worse and that’s a problem for anyone…[Read more]

@janetteB well they all have Ginger hair, so they must be Amy. I ablolutley love Lego but I have to admit these figures look pretty bad. The characters barely even resemble what their supposed to be. The older character options stuff was perfectly fine, why do we even need Lego Doctor Who.
By the way it’s actually @TheKrynoidMan

Bluesqueakpip replied to the topic The End of the World
@TheKrynoidMan – well, I think it did have some element of mystery to it – if you were eight. 😉
That’s what I mean (I think I said it in Rose) about RTD not yet knowing where his audience was. The answer turned out to be ‘everywhere’, but at this point he didn’t know if he was writing primarily for kids, with the adults watching on sufferance.…[Read more]

Bluesqueakpip replied to the topic The End of the World
@TheKrynoidMan – I’d agree with everyone else that the ‘mystery’ was a sub-plot. Doctor Who may sometimes decide to have a bit of a mystery, but this episode was really a ‘save the day’ story. The first three episodes of the new series are introducing us (through Rose) to the world of Doctor Who. Mostly, during the RTD era, this involves the…[Read more]

Great posts, thanks.
@FatManInaBox Thank you for Sean Lennon 😀In further honour of @Purofilion‘s parachute jump (am in complete awe btw, well done you), I was going to post this – Freefallin (Tom Petty)
but that led me to an interesting cover of it by John Mayer which…[Read more] -

@TheKrynoidMan  Can’t argue with that! 🙂
@FaeGrl  That’s a lovely, evocative song. I like the lyrics as much as the singing.
@Purofilion  Sorry to hear about your hospital visit. But I’m glad the dive went well. How brave of you! The view sounds magical, but my stomach is turning flops thinking about the up and down part. I don’t do amusem…[Read more] -

Here’s my song for today, by Eddie Vedder. I love a lot of his songs and his smokey voice:

@blenkinsopthebrave @thekrynoidman
Best wishes for a rapid recovery @blenkinsopthebrave. I share the love of Day of the Triffids (I’d noted your request on the earlier thread @thekrynoidman). I think we’ll feature it soon enough with a few other one-off features and series, but as we’ve just started the RTD retrospective and are about to restart…[Read more]

I remember being torn between admiration for the slick, contemporary look of the opening scenes (the fast edits, the overall energy, the encapsulation of Rose’s life in a few quick scenes) and concern that it might be a case of style over substance. In many ways, I still feel that it was, but I also realize that as a pilot episode, it does its job…[Read more]

@TheKrynoidMan @Whisht  Re: the Dragonheart/Bean connection. You’re right! When the strings enter in the Bean music, they are playing exactly the same melody as the theme of the Dragonheart music. It’s even in the same key, so it really stands out. Even just before that, actually, the piano is sort of playing it as well. How funny. Because yo…[Read more]

y’now @thekrynoidman at first I thought “wha? are you mad?” and then the strings beneath the dumb-fast piano became stronger and I thought “hm, maybe…”
Unfortunately, me being able to hum, and say “hm, maybe” and “yeah the bit where it goes da da te da but then goes down rather than up” is hardly much use to man nor beast.
If any of the more…[Read more]

@TheKrynoidMan  That makes complete sense, as they would have been looking for their audience. Personally, I find it hard not to love a title like “Duck, You Sucker”, but I’m a bit quirky that way. I can imagine that American fans of “tough guy” westerns, especially back in the day, would have had a harder time with it! I saw a few of those L…[Read more]

@TheKrynoidMan I am familiar with “A Fistful of Dynamite”, but was not aware of the “Duck, You Sucker” alternative name… I think I prefer that one! 🙂 Great bit of scoring.
@MonochromeDimension  Now, that’s just fun! It makes a nice tribute to the importance of good scoring (continuing with the theme above) and also the unsung editor!

@TheKrynoidMan – John* Duttine??!!? I remember that!
I should head over to the TV Shows thread to post something about To Serve Them All My Days but all I can remember is a complete feeling of crushing sorrow/ yearning/ ache/ regret that that programme gave me.
It was brilliant, but all I remember is the feeling, like a musty…[Read more]
