    @TheKrynoidMan

    I’m no expert on the guitar, and don’t always feel a strong connection to it, but I love a good hook, and you’ve included some fabulous ones. I do think that there is a quality to the electric guitar that allows a player to make a riff into something special, which I think is part of what makes the Kinks so fabulous. My favou…[Read more]

    ah @TheKrynoidMan – they are indubitably great riffs.

    Hopefully someone (other than my osteopath) can explain why my head rocks back on the Peter Green/Fleetwood Mac track. Every other one my head rocks forward on to hit the beat but that one my head rocks back.
    Maybe just a thing tonight…

    ooh best guitar riff of all time this week – excellent!

    Well it is great. No denying.

    I’ve already linked to Roxette by Dr Feelgood so won’t embed again (though it is a great hook – less is more?!?).
    Also I’m always slightly scared that the lead singer will actually beat me up. (eg I’ve heard no stories that they never got paid).

    Interestingly…[Read more]

    Oh, no. It’s been a tough couple of weeks in the music world. Thanks for that, @TheKrynoidMan. Here’s some of the kind of thing I was listening to when I first became familiar with Winter, back in the early eighties. I was just diving headfirst into all kinds of vintage blues, listening to indie radio blues shows late at night, and this kind of…[Read more]

  • Ah … parting is such sweet sorrow. Still, we have a lot of fun getting to the end. Trapped on board the doomed stunt ship, it’s great to see the team learning to cope with inevitable death, while Zaphod continues to demonstrate that tact is a concept entirely alien to him.

    weren’t they the aliens that RTD2 said would be bigger than the Daleks?

    I remember it well, it was on the sofa of BBC Breakfast, and said with the booming laugh and “nod and a wink” attitude of a man versed in irony who was excavating his cheek with his tongue.

    It may have been reported in print in a different way, but anyone w…[Read more]

  • @fosterferris I have to confess that I agree with you as well. (But like @TheKrynoidMan, only in certain respects…actually the same respects). I think you are absolutely correct about the fact that there was only a problem when you combined Tennant with RTD. All the Tennant episodes I responded to were by other writers. And while I love RTD for…[Read more]

    I probably need one of Bluesqueakpip’s wonderful diagrams, but its just occurred to me that they didn’t have to run.
    As long as they were successful, they had all the time in the world. But then again it would’ve been less fun (for us and them!).

    Must admit I liked this one. I also liked the digs at the Art world – both low (the pompous critics)…[Read more]

    @janetteB

    inspired by a genre of film which I really dislike.

    I used to be really bemused as to why these films were so popular, because you saw one, you effectively saw them all. Just different scenarios and different hazards. Growing up, Christmas wasn’t complete without one though (as far as TV land was concerned). As a teenager, I d…[Read more]

    @TheKrynoidman – excellent!
    Spirit in the Sky – muscular boogie with sweet vocals and harmony – a pure glam classic.
    Glam wasn’t effete and I think this is a great example (‘brickies with glitter’ but can’t remember who’s quote).
    I first heard this song as a cover by Doctor and the Medics and instantly dismissed it as fluff.

  • OK – I enjoyed much of Sound of Drums. The idea of the Master doing a timey wimey in the background of series 2 was an interesting thought. Again in a finale we have the idea of the Doctors past actions (often flippant) can come back to bite him on the ass. In 2, he and Rose inadvertantly inspired the formation of Torchwood, which separated t…[Read more]

    I think the way the Master is presented here is probably not my preference. I think you could say that the Third Doctor (summoning Holmes) had his Moriarty, the Tenth Doctor (summoning Batman) had his Joker. An over-the-top homicidal prankster. It seems a very post-millennial thing, but its roots are firmly in those…[Read more]
