All you’d need to do is start the piece with something like this:
Some of the less intelligent of you mistakenly took Greatest to mean Best when it obviously means Significant. Now we’ve cleared up that little misunderstanding, let’s have your thoughts on Timelash.
Simples. And no one would dare argue.
Alternatively, can you change the list?
25 May 2013 at 14:01 #10882A tough one that. Bit surprised to see an error in the G though 🙂 You’ll see no spelling mistaeks here.
The only way of keeping the same list (ie including the stinkers) is to change the definition of “Greatest” from “Best” to “Most Significant” – the old Thesaurus Ploy.
Alternatively, timey-wimey the headline away by actually changing “Greatest” to “Noteworthy”
25 May 2013 at 05:04 #10845This is very nicely thought out. Jumps out of the page and into your head. I can imagine this on screen.
I do wonder whether the Valeyard will make an appearance in the 50th. Leaning towards not right now.
The problem with the Doctor’s timeline being accessible is that it – at some point – has to be made inaccessible, otherwise the issues surrounding it remain.
25 May 2013 at 04:49 #10844How’s WhoHar Hall doing now that it’s been sent brick by brick to the Antipodes
Unfortunately, Fortescue has lost the plans and is hiding up one of the hotel chimneys to escape my ire. You just can’t get the staff these days.
25 May 2013 at 04:42 #10843I go with the WC Fields solution – drink more alcohol. Then again, this was the guy who used to inject oranges with gin, so he could imbibe on set.
When asked why he didn’t drink water, Fields famously replied “fish make love”. I guess I’d better clean out the bath.
They’ve been talking about this water shortage for many years now, on-and-off. Seems to get dragged out every now and again. There is a US investor (can’t remember his name) who reckons water will be the commodity of the 21st Century. Whether it should be classed as a commodity at all, well….
25 May 2013 at 04:37 #1084225 May 2013 at 04:29 #10841Thanks for responding to my ramblings earlier on. A bit of the lawyer about your response, in terms of the flow of logic. This is a good thing.
I also like @badwulf‘s suggestion and look forward to your response to that.
25 May 2013 at 04:27 #1084024 May 2013 at 11:44 #10686I was being pedantic
One person’s pedantry is another person’s precision.
This is good though, as it ties in petrichor – just need the Delight bit now.
Ooh, hang on. What if we take @chickenelly‘s definition.
Crimson, eleven, delight, petrichor.
Maybe it refers to the (Hurt / Tennant / Smith) Doctor’s joy at the Tardis finally taking off from somewhere. Just need the Crimson bit now. Red Tardis anyone?
24 May 2013 at 11:39 #10684petrichor is the smell the Tardis leaves when it dematerializes
Yes, I like this alot. I love the fact that the Tardis has a smell.
Hello btw. Seems like ages since we chatted. How’s your, ahem, grandmother?
24 May 2013 at 06:09 #10654He could easily have gone a day, or part of a day, not having seen his face No mirrors in the Tardis? He’s not that superficial?
Yet he changed his clothes.
I’m playing Devil’s advocate a little here – I too think Doc 9 had just regenerated and as a nice tie-in to a meta-reference you may well be correct. I remain unconvinced but open to argument. As I said before, there’s something about that leaf that’s odd.
24 May 2013 at 06:00 #10652I think it may be a portent of Smith’s regeneration: Make like a tree and leave.
(I’m in too much of a rush to even attempt to pick my coat up on the way out)
24 May 2013 at 05:49 #10650So, it’s all about the leaf. :-). OK:
From a completely non-story perspective, I don’t think Moffat would have the Hurt Doctor anywhere else except between 8 & 9, otherwise he makes a huge change to the original story that I think many fans would find unappealing. I’m in two minds about it personally but you can imagine the furore it would cause. This way (ie Hurt = Doc 8.5), he’s only affecting Doc’s 9, 10 & 11.
The other option I guess is that the Hurt character isn’t literally the same as the Doc, either through some Moffatty wordplay or slight of hand, but that would seem like a ma-hoosive cheat. I think Hurt’s character will only be around for the 50th story and I’m just hoping that the way that is resolved actually has consequences, rather than being a reset.
Oh, yeah, now about that leaf…
24 May 2013 at 05:37 #10647The more you write, the more considered it becomes. You should definitely combine all these forum posts into a blog post.
What about this as another option – the Cushing Doctor is human but the TL’s are using him in place of the actual Doctor for some reason eg maybe they don’t want to get caught interfering. (I’ve not thought this through btw).
24 May 2013 at 05:21 #10645It is strongly implied that 9 had just regenerated in Rose, and that is the assumption that I made at the time.
You can make a case though, that it wasn’t done on that actual day.
From what we know of regens, the Doc tends to behave strangely for a while and there was none of that evident in Ecclestone’s take on it, when compared to his later performance.
The question then presents: if it’s not Doc 9’s first day in a new face, why has he never seen it before? Possibly he was incapacitated (too ill) or maybe he was captive. It could be something as prosaic as him being too busy or not being near any reflective surfaces. That last option is particularly interesting given all the talk of mirrors and watery portals (copyright @juniperfish)
24 May 2013 at 05:14 #10644Re: Cracks. It’s a good point, but it only affected the pre-Big Bang universe. Does that then imply that the end of this 3-season arc will loop back to tEH at some point?
Re: Leaf. That scene confused me a little bit, as the leaf the Doc gave to Clara looked like it had been destroyed in tRoA. If it’s not been destroyed, does that therefore mean that the leaf wasn’t ‘given’ to the grandfather? Or perhaps it was given to another grandfather (ie the Doc), or perhaps they are one and the same thing (somehow TBD). My brain began to hurt at this point and so I’ve put it down to some timey-wimeyness for now.
There’s something odd about the whole leaf thing to me – it doesn’t sit quite right somehow – though I wonder if it will become significant or if it is just a bit of Moffatyness. Similarly with the “Run you clever boy and remember (me)” line, which felt a bit forced.
24 May 2013 at 03:29 #10639Petrichor is rain on dust; the smell of the rain after the drought
Fair enough, but I was just being brief by using “dust” and wondering if there was some recent link back to that famous phrase. A bit tenuous.
Petrichor (to my knowledge) was not one of the better known words – at least before tDW. And the whole phrasing of that sentence still needs some context.
The cracks in time are the work of the Doctor
I would love this to be true – a 3+ season arc.
Hurt Doc is in the Doc’s timestream – everywhere and everywhen the Doc has been / is going to be. Shouldn’t cracks be appearing all over if that was the case?
23 May 2013 at 23:49 #10630There were alot of references to dust in this ep, which brings me back to:
crimson eleven delight petrichor
Well, we’ve had Crimson (Horror), Eleven (Hurt / Tennant / Smith), Petrichor (dust) – any mention of Delight?
I keep thinking of Angel Delight but can’t get that into the show (yet).
23 May 2013 at 23:45 #10629@bluesqueakpip @jimthefish @scaryb
Bluntwin Hootwhistle
If that character does appear in the next series of DW, then we’ll deifnitely know the Moff’s been on these boards.
23 May 2013 at 13:43 #10520But, but, but, Bluntwin Hootwhistle, you said.
23 May 2013 at 12:30 #10503Re: post #10472
No pressure – just post if you want to or just lurk. Nice talking to you either way.
23 May 2013 at 07:33 #10470Unless you did something like setting fire to my dog.
Don’t worry, my dog-torching days are long over.
23 May 2013 at 07:30 #10469Good old PBS.
If you feel the urge to expand your thoughts on the “potent cocktail of weirdness”, you could put your thoughts on Faces of the Doctor or the Doctor Who Memories forums.
Welcome, btw.
23 May 2013 at 07:00 #10465Meant to ask: was it the Cushing movies that first got you interested in DW?
23 May 2013 at 06:58 #10464PS: I’m Canadian
Guessed wrong, darn it! Apologies. Again.
When I said working their theories into the show, I didn’t mean actually having them incorporated on screen. As you said, it’s very difficult to break into TV generally and DW even more so, I imagine. Plus, I think if any of us did manage to get anywhere near the DW team, the authorities would be called in.
No, this forum is full of weird and wonderful theories which try to explain what’s happening in DW and what may happen. Usually no-one manages to come up with exactly the correct explanation but it’s mainly the journey that counts. Like you say it’s fun and generates some discussion.
I did Google you and found my way to the ERB site. I’ve not taken a proper look yet – I will do when I get a bit more time. I’m not at all familiar with Lexx but there are some members on here who probably are. Wait until the day shift (ie the UK contingent) arrive.
Don’t let my random musings put you off – it’s a nice site here and I’m sure you’ll find much to enjoy.
BTW if you put the @username in your posts then the associated person receives an email saying they’ve been mentioned.
23 May 2013 at 05:39 #10461Well, you’ll excuse my casual use of idiom
No need – I actually like it a great deal. From what you’ve said (and the time you’ve posted) I would guess you’re from the US. But yes, both those expressions are well known and understood in the UK.
The majority of posters on here try and work their theories into the TV show, so I was approaching it from that angle. My mistake. It wasn’t my intention to belittle what you wrote, so apologies if you thought that the case.
One of the things I like about DW is that it inspires people to be creative. Have you considered expanding this to a full story? I’m sure it would generate interest.
23 May 2013 at 04:29 #10458The whole Silence thing is ripe for such wordplay that I can’t believe Moffat will leave it alone for to much longer.
BTW: your name – you’re not a (Meddling) Monk are you?
23 May 2013 at 04:18 #10457Just run that by me again. 🙂
It’s an interesting theory and it all hangs together pretty well. I don’t think they’ll try and integrate the Cushing movies in with the main show. I could be wrong but it’s confusing enough as it is.
Of course if they do, then, with the new potential Doc, that would putt Matt Smith as the 13th incarnation.
Not sure whether this:
Time Lords are dicks.
or this:
Gallifrey went tits up
is my favourite line though. Be interesting to try and sneak those lines into a script.
23 May 2013 at 01:53 #10454Now we all probably wish Van Gogh was a Realist and not an Impressionist!
Indeed :-). I wonder though, how he came to paint that in the first place.
23 May 2013 at 01:16 #10453Agreed – I think the Trenzalore prophecy has happened. Silence did fall – all the stars in the Universe went out. Pretty quiet after that I think.
Of course, all and any theories are now on the table if we add the “Clara did it” clause. The Moff’s pulled a stroke of genius there in terms of potentially negating any event in the Doc’s history that he personally doesn’t like. I’m not sure he’ll use it to any great degree though. It’s an explanation too for the inconsistencies and…and provides infinite possibilities for us bonkers theorists. If we’re not careful we’ll all end up as mad as a whirlpool bath of fishes.
23 May 2013 at 01:09 #10451The van Gogh painting is open to interpretation – like most good art. My initial impression was as yours is, but now I am not so sure. I’ve not looked at it for a while. 1, 2 or 3 Tardii, colliding or exploding, I just hope there is a reasonable explanation. Although – untill we know – it is grist to the bonkers theory mill.
23 May 2013 at 00:03 #10441Maybe the van Gogh painting isn’t two Tardii colliding, maybe it’s one Tardis splitting into two.
22 May 2013 at 05:29 #10320This is down to personal opinion but I personally don’t think trawling through the entire back catalogue is the best way to go.
Have a look at the Doctor Who Memories forum for further ideas. Specifically from HTPBDET’s post #5101 over there (hope he won’t mind me repeating it here – he is indisposed right now):
When people ask me how to get in to Doctor Who, I always suggest that they watch the very first episode, then The Three Doctors, then Dalek Invasion of Earth, Tomb of the Cybermen, Terror of the Autons, Robots of Death, Talons of Weng-Chiang, Caves of Androzani and Remembrance of the Daleks.
That gives you an overview of the classic series. Once you have seen them, you can then turn to things like Five Doctors, Pirate Planet, City of Death, Kinda, Snakedance, Seeds of Death, The Axtecs, The Romans, The Meddling Monk, Earthshock , Curse of Peladon, Planet of the Spiders and War Games.
Look also at a couple of the blogs on this site for mroe expansive lists. Everyone has their favourites though.
Another option is to buy/download some of the books – Target novels were very popular in the 1970’s and still going up to the 1990’s I believe. Not brilliant in terms of literature but they give you a chance to find out about some of the missing episodes (those the BBC wiped off their tapes – 1st & 2nd Doc stories), as well as dip into some of the other Doc stories.
For background, there is also the BBC Doctor Who site – packed to the rafters with lots of info, pictures, clips etc. YouTube has many of the stories too. You could also try something like Wikipedia which can be helpful in things like titles for the stories, summaries of each of the Doc’s adventures and when they were broadcast.
Sorry if that’s a bit overwhelming but it is a 50 year old show. There’s lots of history but that’s a good thing. Enjoy.
22 May 2013 at 01:00 #10314@shazzbot (I think)
Re: Jenny’s desktop comment. I just took that as being a joke – they were seated around a giant desk.
Oh and hello to the new arrivals. It’s very friendly here so don’t be shy.
21 May 2013 at 13:49 #1019621 May 2013 at 13:47 #10195However I do have to pick you up on your comments about the Tardis though
I was going to put she sounds like a Yale key being scraped up and down a piano wire and then put through a synthesizer but that’s plainly ridiculous.
21 May 2013 at 13:35 #10191Re: the point that Clara-in-Bits is the new hero of the show.
It’s possible that C-i-B was only running interference for the Doc. ie she stopped the GI before he (?) had the chance to prevent the Doc’s good deeds. So the Doc is still the hero as it was his actions that saved the day. C-i-B is just the facilitator.
But we saw the stars go out, Jenny die etc. etc. which implies the GI did his (?) worst. Not necessarily though because, if all time happens at once, then Clara prevented the GI from doing those deeds at the same time. What we saw was on screen was just a way to represent that process to us mere mortals. I think.
TBH we can cut this one up in several different ways – I suspect we won’t know for sure until the 50th. But we should keep on trying on our different bonkers theories for size. And, until 23-11-13, vive la difference mes amis!
21 May 2013 at 13:17 #10184I’d presume that the TARDIS scene was included here to show us that the battles between the GI and Clara changed continuity. It no longer exists; even the continuity of S6 has been changed. We have now seen on-screen continuity be changed.
I’m not convinced that the continuity has been changed in any significant way. In tDW, Sexy said she chose him. How did she do this, exactly – flash him a bit of console or flutter her time rotor perhaps? Doesn’t really work. She could have made some encouraging noises when he went past but really? Have you heard her – she sounds like an asthmatic water buffalo that’s just sat on a thistle. It’s more likely to put him off.
My guess is that Sexy had many suitors in the past – how they find her is not important – but she rejected them all. How? Maybe she doesn’t let them in, or maybe she won’t fire up or let them pilot her. Then, Clara nudges Doc 1 towards her. She thinks “I’ll have a bit of this”, let’s him in, fires up and away they go.
I still think Moffat will use this plotline as a way to address anomalies in the show’s history, rather than retcon the whole show to date. And I’ve said that on here and on the G blog now, so it must be right.
21 May 2013 at 07:48 #10143We never previously saw on screen how Doc 1 chose Old Sexy, so it’s not necessarily a change in canon. But, given Old Sexy said she chose him, that would imply a change from tDW or Clara is linked to the Tardis somehow.
I’d have to go back and look at the G blog again to get the coords but the above summary is pretty good.
21 May 2013 at 04:52 #10138Myself and @mtgradwell (hello, btw) had a detailed discussion on this over on the G blog.
His point was that the stories (as transmitted on tv) remain as they are (ie no change to what we’ve viewed) except Clara was in there somewhere (as she has always been – just we didn’t generally see her). ie the timeline is a closed loop. This was broadly my take too but I suggested, given Moffat’s previously stated views on the subject, that he may take this plotline as an opportunity to explain away some of the inconsistencies in the previous show. Somehow.
20 May 2013 at 10:17 #9979Yes, I don’t really take my own advice. Just been back on the G and it’s unfortunately degenerated into insults (not on my side I hasten to add). Always a sign that the argument, sorry discussion, is lost.
@Shazzbot @bluesqueakpip @everyone
You are right and it’s frustrating. Self restraint is the way to go. I was not having a go at any posts in particular – and they weren’t that bad – but this is a nice space – any destructive arguments are best left at the G IMHO.
20 May 2013 at 09:49 #9974Some great wordplay in this episode:
(In the) Name of the Doctor
The Doctor taking his secret to his grave
The Fall of the Eleventh at Trenzalore – I can’t take credit for this – someone on the G blog (page 7) suggested that this was a description of the Tardis’s landing on the planet.
20 May 2013 at 09:07 #9970ruffle shirts are best left back in the early ’70s
Indeed. Although burgundy velvet jackets are very on-trend (at least I think they are)
@janetteb Bananas?
Well, she can be a little odd at times…;-)
20 May 2013 at 08:37 #9963What a great idea.
I can only think of Wine Gums (TIA?) but feel sure there were a few others mentioned in tEH – “you’re Scottish, fry something” sequence.
Pertwee sips a “good red” in Day of the Daleks.
20 May 2013 at 04:07 #9956Can I just make a teensy request. Can we please avoid talking excessively about posters on the G blog who aren’t posters here. It feels a bit like we’re talking behind their backs. The odd mention is fine but lets leave it to comments about their comments.
Apologies; I don’t want to come across as prescriptive but we’ve set impressively high standards here and I feel it would be a shame to let that slip.
20 May 2013 at 04:00 #9954Bloody terrific episode. Nicely paced and tone was good – the humour worked well and not too jarring. Moffat making fun of himself with the Glasgow scene and the “Bring out your Women and Intellectuals” line.
Not sure if this has already been posted but my thoughts on the John Hurt Doctor: he could be
Pre-1
Pre-9
Post-11 (timey wimey and all that)
The Beast.
The Storm – hmm, wasn’t Doc 9 the Oncoming Storm. Then that would mean John Hurt’s Doc would come between 9 and 10, which can’t make sense. Doc 11 used the Oncoming Storm line in AotD too. Probably a red herring or an abbreviation of that name.
18 May 2013 at 09:26 #9510@everybody
Prob won’t be on now until after the finale airs here (about 13 hours after most of you lucky people).
Hope you all stay spoiler free and enjoy.
For your marketing drive: The DW forum has wit, warmth and wonder. And a caption competition – perfect for whiling away the hours until the 50th
18 May 2013 at 01:32 #9504Thanks for the help re blog formatting. It’s appreciated.
17 May 2013 at 13:49 #9435And I’d like to propose that @miapatrick‘s phrase – bonkers as a bath full of fishes is now adopted as official replacement for mad as a box of frogs as the standard measure for ultimate bonkers-ness

Seconded.
17 May 2013 at 13:45 #9434Yes, I’ve just been on there. Posted this:
This is very naughty of you Dan. An article attempting to drive a wedge between the peaceable folk who come on this board week after week, happily speculating without ever having to use such hackneyed phrases as “Classic Who is better than Nu Who” or “RTD was better than Moffat”, or “Tennant was better than Smith”. Hang your head in shame young man, hang your head in shame.
Oh, hang on, scrap all that. I’ve just realised I’m on the Guardian DW blog.
Couldn’t resist. Am I very bad?
