“shareholder value”
I think the key here is whether the shareholder value is short term (effectively asset stripping) or long term which is more aligned with a sustainable business and employee interests.
Sadly neo liberal bullshit means 95% of companies are run for the short term
30 October 2013 at 11:47 #19572An interesting discussion. In terms of getting the truth out there you would think t’internet would be an enabler. However it seems to be going the other way because:
a) there is so much shit out there that people revert to what they know eg BBC, Guardian…
b) The opportunity to spout shit is increased exponentially so disinformation abounds.
c) Google is ubiqitous and – because it tracks and profiles – it limits your choices30 October 2013 at 11:11 #19571I’m a piping hot mess. Apart from that, I got nothing.
29 October 2013 at 11:16 #19513Just logged on from here in Aus and read about @htpbdet ‘s passing.
His writing about DW and other matters was always so personal and so full of wisdom and knowledge that it was a joy to read.
I remarked to him once that a post he once made about the loss of his sibling and how his Grandmother used Patrick Troughton’s regeneration to help him come to terms with what had happened affected me on an emotional level. I said at the time that a virtual handshake would have to suffice in place of the real thing. I had hoped one day to meet for real.
His posts inspired me in a very real way and I am rather cack-handedly writing a screenplay in part based upon his posts. I had planned to send it to him for his undoubted incisive comment
To his family I of course offer my condolences. You will have read by now many posts from members of this board and how they hold @htpbdet in very high esteem. I imagine it is still very painful to read these posts but please know this: he brought and still brings out the best in people on this forum and that is a very rare and Doctor-like quality.

29 October 2013 at 02:06 #19504And I’ll also have the minor issue of getting there for around 6:30am.
Count yourselves lucky.
29 October 2013 at 02:03 #1950329 October 2013 at 01:39 #19502@scaryb (got the “y” in this time, sorry)
@wolfweed Nice screengrab – it’s really difficult to work it out, with the distortion on the globe, but it’s not Clara and it doesn’t look like SJ. And it does look a bit like CAF
But does it look like the actor who plays Susan in Adventures in Space and Time? Now that would be interesting and would point to the “drumroll…..return of Susan”
28 October 2013 at 01:48 #19440Those TL’s with their head in their hands always reminded me – by their pose – of Weeping Angels. Given that the WA feed off time, I had a bonkers notion that Moffat was planning to reveal that TL’s (or some of them) had transformed into Angels (somehow).
It would be nice but there are enough strange theories and loose ends around as it is.
28 October 2013 at 01:42 #19439@ScarB
and I agree with most of what you say
What do you mean, most 🙂
28 October 2013 at 01:38 #19438Presumably, as D11 has already witnessed these events once (when still D10) and remembers, he will somehow alter them, breaking out of the loop.
In the past when there have been mutli-Doctor stories, the TL’s have been there to help and avoid any paradoxes. They are not there now so this could all become very messy: D11 should have all the memories of D10 and D10 should have known – in advance – who he would regenerate into. However, there has been no indication of this in-show to date.
Also if D10 alters the future then D11 wouldn’t need to go and find him (presumably) which means that D10 doesn’t then alter the future which means that D11 then does have to go and find him (presumably) etc. etc.
Then again, time isn’t a strict progression of cause and effect, is it?
25 October 2013 at 03:08 #19263Well, this has turned into a bit of a mutual appreciation society. If this is what you guys are like sober, goodness knows how you’ll be when you all meet up and get leathered. 🙂
I can almost hear it now: ” I love you Craig, your my favourite Emperor, honeshhht.” (only jealous ’cause I can’t be there 🙁 )
25 October 2013 at 02:55 #19262Moffat has played the proverbial blinder in having the episode immediately pre-the 50th have a (disrupted) version of the Doc’s entire timestream / life / lives and by also introducing the Hurt Doctor character.
It means he can basically do anything he wants for the 50th, including killing off Matt. Add in Capaldi’s announcement as the next Doctor and you could even throw in an early surprise regeneration.
Why is this genius? Well it give us lot almost unlimited scope for bonkers theories, obv.
I don’t think Moffat will destroy 50 years of the show by doing some kind of major retcon (sorry @blenkinsopthebrave – and no 4th wall, I think). Although as I have said before, his tinkering with the Doc’s timestream could help explain away any anomalies in the BG show (eg Unit dating conundrum).
I like @bluesqueakpip ‘s 50 years in one day idea, as that wouldn’t minimise the previous adventures, just allow us to look at them in a different way. Although it could border on the “it was all a dream” trope if done badly.
There has been alot of emphasis on the previous Docs, both in tNofD and also the trailer; I can’t believe this is anything but deliberate – Moffat priming the AG Who fans about the BG Docs. To what end though?
I suspect Moffat has a huge arc planned out and will resolve / explain some of the many things that people have mentioned many times on this Forum. The Van Gogh two/three Tardises/ Tardii painting will be significant – I can feel it in my water. Either multi Tardii crashing or multi Tardii being produced / born.
My feeling about the oft-quoted Susan is that she (possibly in another form) may make an appearance in the 50th but maybe won’t be revealed fully until the more Grandfatherly Capaldi takes over.
Apologies for the long post – things, chest, off, getting – please rearrange. Hopefully my ramblings have passed grammar muster and there are enough paragraphs to ensure the slightly-less-lexic among us have no difficulties. 🙂
18 October 2013 at 03:22 #18668For an especially surreal experience, watch it dubbed into Spanish

18 October 2013 at 03:07 #18667And now this:

It’s all coming together, I tell you.
18 October 2013 at 02:52 #18665Hurt as Doctor Zero* means we’re at Valeyard stage already
Are you saying Matt is the Valeyard?! I confess to not seeing anything of the original Valeyard but that would be an interesting twist.
And this:
you mean he’s Hurtnell…?!
Oi! Appalling puns are my territory.
It’s good to see the bonkers theories are still going strong and that @pedant hasn’t mellowed.
@janetteB
Melbourne it is.
17 October 2013 at 02:50 #18611Plus something @phaseshift has previosuly brought up, some fans don’t consider the first two changes to be regenerations as such as the term was never used at the time.
Unless it’s the old “Brain of Morbius’ problem again.
17 October 2013 at 02:47 #18610Another good post.
Options for Hurt Doc are:
1. Pre Doc 1
2. Between Docs 2 & 3
3. Between Docs 8 & 9
The clothing that Hurt wears would suggest 3. but I still think it will be 1. I think you are right that Moffat will not dwell on the Time War but go elsewhere, which effectively eliminates 3 I suggest. Actually I would really like it to be 2. but the redemption part of the Hurt Doc would have to involve Pertwee somehow, so it seems unlikely to me.
As regards the extra regenerations, wasn’t Tennant’s regen into the meta-crisis Doc specifically mentioned as not being a proper regeneration, in show?
But 12 Regens = 13 Docs, so Capaldi is the last, which doesn’t quite fit in with his plans for Doctor Who 2063 does it? Unless he’s going to address the regen issue in the 50th.
Moffat is a dear, isn’t he? Always messing with the fans.
17 October 2013 at 02:36 #18609@janette @scaryb, @phaseshift
Many thanks for the info on the 50th, and the kind words – good to be back.
I’m a bit north of Tasmania, on the mainland. Have you actually moved to Canada permanently? I’ve been to Vancouver a few times and really liked it. Your first winter is going to be a bit of a shock I think. Good luck though.
15 October 2013 at 03:33 #18533I too thought about Day of the Doctor = Day of the Daleks (btw the Special Edition is worth purchasing, especially if you like to see Jo grant flashing her pants!). Does this mean the return of the Blinovitch Limitation Effect? It would be good to see the Ogrons return.
I do think Moffat will try and “reset the clock” for the 50th and the alternate history plot in Day of the Daleks
*******SPOILER ALERT (KIND OF) *******************
(which is changed when Doc 3 realises how the guerrillas cause the very future they are trying to prevent)
*********SPOILER ALERT (KIND OF) ENDS ************
would be right up Moffat’s street.
However, i can’t see him ripping the plot off directly, but he may allude to it somehow. Given Eleven’s penchant for new outfits, I fully expect to see Matt in a burgundy velvet jacket, drinking copious amounts of wine. I wonder if he’ll improve on Pertwee’s fine wine line though. Something like “That’s a most good-humoured wine. A touch sardonic, perhaps, but not cynical” They don’t, err, write them like that anymore.
15 October 2013 at 03:15 #18532@blenkinsopthebrave (or anyone else)
Any news on how the 50th is to be broadcast in the colonies. I heard there is going to be a simulcast of the 50th over 75 countries, which I guess would mean a Sunday morning viewing down here. Presumably that means a TV show rather than a cinema release too.
Apologies if this has already been covered but I’ve been caught up in non-DW stuff, unfortunately and I really can’t be arsed looking through 10 pages of comments. Thanks in advance.
15 October 2013 at 02:53 #18531Bloody hell. I’m away for a few weeks and we have a new Doc, some recovered Troughton eps and, if all that wasn’t enough, a new look website. It looks really good, so well done you.
Mad busy with the usual detritus of life type stuff but will surely be back on this new look forum to post my usual blend of ill-informed comments and self-deprecating crap.
4 June 2013 at 02:57 #11816As we’ve already had mention of Tom Cruise – out of the others on the various lists, who wouldn’t you like to see as the Doc? Personally, I wouldn’t be in favour of Stephen Fry – nothing against him, it’s just I can’t see him in that role. Would still like to see him write an ep though.
4 June 2013 at 02:56 #11815We also have a several people who just post banal nonsense….but I’m keeping an eye on them
I’d better watch my step then 🙂
3 June 2013 at 05:03 #11734Given his recent (alleged) comments, it would be hilarious if the BBC offered the part to John Simm.
They could do a DW version of Face/Off.
3 June 2013 at 04:51 #11733Incidentally, I searched for his tweets on Twitter and if you do that, be careful as there’s obviously a gay porn actor with the same name. Not only did I see the tweets about Doctor Who, I saw a few pictures that I wasn’t expecting..
Apologies for laughing at your misfortune, but that made me roar.
3 June 2013 at 04:43 #11730what if season 8 involves multiple regenerations, perhaps even one a week, because of some timey-wimey problem?
I like this. The BBC could use it as a kind of live audition and try out all different kinds of actors: black/white/old/young/male/female etc. The internet would give them their weekly approval ratings instantly.
I wonder how long Moffat is going to stick around for now. Another season for sure but then? It wouldn’t surprise me if the next Doctor is only in place for a season which would allow for greater risk taking in casting the lead. The showrunner and next Doctor could leave at the same time.
I have to say, as much as I enjoy Matt Smith’s performance, I’m not unhappy there is going to be a change. Dramatically it feels right and I think the show needs to refresh periodically: 3-4 years seems about right too.
3 June 2013 at 04:22 #11728Just one thing – I don’t think it’s fair to count the Abzorbaloff in this list: an imaginative child came up with that. Who are we to squash the imagination of children, to stamp out the thrill of childhood success?
It’s a fair point, although I think it was the execution rather than the idea that is the problem. Didn’t I read somewhere (on these very boards perhaps), that the young creator of the Abzorbaloff had imagined his monster to be 30 feet tall and not Peter Kay.
I suspect @danmartinuk‘s pitch may have been overtaken by events.
3 June 2013 at 04:03 #11727If it wasn’t him it would have been someone else. I’m not excusing his blabbing but I think the real blame should lie with whoever at the BBC sent the mysterious email. First the DVD fiasco and now this – I wonder if Caroline Skinner is out for revenge.
BTW I concur with @bluesqueakpip, @pedant and @jimthefish – the new Doc is already decided and there will be a regeneration in the 50th Anniversary special. Any other talk from the BBC / Moffat reeks of damage limitation.
3 June 2013 at 00:54 #11722Sipping burgundy while wearing a burgundy velvet jacket – now that’s class – if you can pull it off.
31 May 2013 at 02:38 #11428Any suggestions from the realm of Doc’s 1 or 2?
I’m only seen a few episodes, so not best placed to comment on them. The Krotons come to mind as looking a bit daft but I don’t know if they were easily defeatable or not.
31 May 2013 at 02:33 #11427@PennyInThe Air
I like this, although with Moffat’s predilection for cause-and-effect type plots, I can easily see Clara / Doc causing the leaf to fall out of the timestream at the exact point where it hits her Dad-to-be in the face.
31 May 2013 at 01:44 #11424Adolf in Let’s Kill Hitler.
31 May 2013 at 01:42 #1142331 May 2013 at 01:31 #11419First of all, I’d love to see a 4 parter in the next season.
The Slitheen were pretty bad and the maggots in the Green Death were pretty feeble. The ‘minotaur’ in Nimon. The Abzorbaloff, ’nuff said.
31 May 2013 at 01:16 #11416Thinking about @craig and @curvedspace‘s discussion on the kitsch aspects of Flash Gordon set me wondering. Is there a movie that you like / love that you really shouldn’t. You know, it’s poorly written or acted, dodgy production values but, but you just can’t help it. A guilty pleasure if you will.
I’ll start. Two words. Hudson Hawk.
Bruce Willis as a singing cat burglar, Danny Aiello as his assistant, Andi Macdowell as a nun, James Coburn as head of the CIA, Richard E Grant and Sandra Bernhard as villains, characters called Kit Kat and Snickers and a mythical Leonardo da Vinci alchemy machine. What’s not to love? Plenty, it turns out. What can I say? I’m bearing my soul here people.
29 May 2013 at 01:54 #1127329 May 2013 at 01:41 #11272the Doctor nearly faints when close to the paradox of his own time-line
but Clara didn’t. Does this kibosh your Clara as Doctor theory?
29 May 2013 at 01:26 #112712 of these (female Time Lords) did not agree with what was happening and had to cover there faces
I always thought that those Time Lords looked distinctly Weeping Angel-ish. Just sayin’
28 May 2013 at 07:14 #11186Hello and welcome.
Good catch on the Hide “blood calling to blood” line.
My take was that River was still linked to Clara because of the teleconference, but the Spoilers comment would tend to disprove that. Unless the teleconference psychic link wouldn’t be expected to work once Clara had entered the Doc’s timestream. In that case, what would work? A blood line, or some other means TBD.
Moffat does tend to foreshadow a bit, so possibly Clara is biologically linked to River some way. I hope not, as it’s a bit of a repeat of the Amy-River story. The other option of course is that River is somehow in the Doc’s timestream herself.
Alternatively – and in a vain attempt to answer your initial question – perhaps Clara’s mum is also in the timestream and River is linked to her. Assuming the blood link holds, that would make Clara River’s granddaughter. Ahh.
28 May 2013 at 04:02 #1118321 regenerations would kick the problem down the road until the 100th Anniversary I should think.
28 May 2013 at 04:01 #11182you have yet to get the hang of colonial humour
No, I’m just a bit stupid sometimes. But, no smileys? Come on.
I just think that he will do something in the 50th in a narrative way, that will make it impossible for future showrunners to run with the show without reference to what he has done
And it’s our job to work out what he is going to do!
28 May 2013 at 02:56 #11179I hope they don’t bring that back in.
I think Moffat is all about leaving the past behind but doing it in a sympathetic way, so as to preserve the history. He’s a fan after all. But, from what I’ve read about him, it wouldn’t surprise me if he does something audacious to the story going forwards. The 50th would be an ideal platform for that. I’m not convinced both him and Matt Smith will stick around much after that, maybe just for another half season.
28 May 2013 at 02:43 #11177Moffat has wanted to have the last word on Doctor Who
Apparently he’s going to regenerate JFK.
28 May 2013 at 02:40 #11176@blenkinsothebrave
So many threads, so little time. So what was your conclusion?
28 May 2013 at 01:49 #11170Yes, that makes more sense and gives us one less thing to theorise about which, in this case, is a good thing.
28 May 2013 at 01:11 #11165Anyone out there with experience of collapsing timestreams, LOL?
I did / will have.
Clara says: “I saw all of you – 11 faces
Yes, this backs up your theory. It resonated with me when she said it as it heavily implies either:
a) Doc 11 is the last one.
b) There is no more future, somehow.
The explanation to this conundrum will be explaned in the 50th show (confidence level = high), along with all the other loose ends (confidence level = low-medium)
28 May 2013 at 01:01 #11163Now here’s a thing.
The last line on the G piece that Moffat did
http://www.guardian.co.uk/tv-and-radio/tvandradioblog/2013/may/18/steven-moffat-fans-saved-doctor-who-finale
said this:
Ten plus 11 gives you …
The obvious answer is 21 but with Moffat, rarely are things obvious.
It’s a tease for the 50th but what could it mean?
Let’s go with the easiest option: 21 regenerations.
River gave the Doc her remaining regenerations in LKH. So 11 Doc (including the Hurt Doc regen we’ve not seen) + 10 River (assumed) = 21.
Any other ideas?
The thing that strikes me immediately about the quote is the phrasing: “Ten plus 11”, rather than 10+11. from which I infer that perhaps “Ten” is a noun rather than a number. This of course answers nothing but I’m just putting it out there.
It could just be Moffat messin’ with our minds.
Oh and FWIW, I think John Hurt’s character will only appear in the 50th, although there may be an opportunity for a guest spot in future eps.
28 May 2013 at 00:48 #11161More fish!
Shouldn’t all you guys be on the “Goodbye Mr Chips” message board
(joke copyright @whohar from the G blog aeons ago)
28 May 2013 at 00:38 #11160Yes, this is a good point. If the Doc has been in his own timestream – it implies both he and Clara now know the Doc’s future.
Unless he somehow didn’t look. I guess you can make a case for Clara only going into the Doc’s past as, presumably, that was what the GI was altering. Possibly the Doc was only in his own timestream at the point where he rescued Clara, although it would be a massive coincidence. I’m not sure the physics of the thing has been fully thought out and there are probably inconvenient implications. I’ll mull it over but if anyone’s got any ideas…
25 May 2013 at 14:34 #10893Evil Doctor Who Journalism Gays
Well then, finish the 20 Greatest list with the, er 20 greatest eps. and then start a top 20 “Doctor Who Episodes with a Gay Sub-Text” list. The original list gets completed, you remain employed until November, you get your own mwahaha list and the resultant fallout causes the Internet to explode. Everybody
