The Trailer – Discuss it here

by

The trailer for The Day of The Doctor is now on the official BBC site. So it no longer counts as a spoiler, although some people may still not want to see it.

Let’s try and keep discussion of it here if possible.

  1. Well, to get this started then:

Alright, I watched it. Will be spectacular in 3D
The thing that stands out most for me is Clara using a Vortex manipulater on her own??

    Cheers,

    Timeloop

  2. I posted on the Spoilers thread, where it first appeared, that I thought it was definitely all about the Time War and The Moment. Then I had a second watch and realised that Rose saying “The moment has come” then cutting to a big red button is probably Moffat trying a massive misdirect.

And, yes, @Timeloop I also noticed Clara using the vortex manipulator and thought it really stood out. Just like River Song…?

  3. @Craig Exactly! Just like River Song…. I have to get around making that list with their similarities. Preferebly before the movie hits.

I am with you with the Moment. Could be it, could be wrong. But that is no button. It is a a gem – a rubin.

  4. Ooh… from that Wikipedia page. Nothing to do with the trailer, but I like it.

Because of this potential doomsday use, Cold-War-era fiction often featured a BRB as the final trigger for a self-destruct process. It could also represent a “nuclear” or radical solution to a problem, much like “cutting the Gordian knot”, and likely lead to the BRB’s use as a reset button.

  5. Oh My!

Ooooo, squeeing all over the place!

    ::Ahem!::

Apologies to @Timeloop – they’re certainly flagging “The Moment”.ย  Although I still wouldn’t be surprised if as @Craig says, it’s a masive misdirect and it’s just “the moment”

First thoughts – and apologies if any of this has been covered – I had a quick scan throught the spoilers page Craig linked to –

The TARDIS in the first shot – very, very battered, and whose footsteps are leading away from it?

    Poor Gallifrey

John Hurt is amazing! Check out that tiny twitch just after Matt says “…one life I’ve tried to forget”

    Smith and Tennant together ๐Ÿ˜€

The Zygons look stunning – that rubber suit image they released yonks ago was a massive tease. Amazing what you can do with good lighting, a bit of shadow and a good camera angle.

Rose in Bad Wolf mode (as mentioned) – love the eyes

And yes, Clara with a vortex manipulator and a very knowing smile (1 thing I’m sure re Moffat’s writing – there are no coincidences – if we’re seeing connections/thematic links or whatever between Clara and River that’s cos they’re in there on purpose)

Who’s the period-dress woman with the red hair? Elizabeth (see below)?

And the very short teaser they released yesterday –

The painitng!! Burning Gallifrey! (And good spot on the Medusa painting @JimtheFish )

Elizabeth’s credentials? Any connection with “Liz, I’m the bloody queen, mate” from Beast Below?

Wow, there’s a lot packed into less than a minute (both trailers combined)

Did someone say there’s another trailer to come…? Spoiled (in a good way) isn’t the word!

  6. @Craig Good spot on the horse – yup, looks like Tennant (or a stuntman looking like him) – looks like his shoes – don’t look like boots.ย  (And Girl in the Fireplace is a Moffat story – yay! for our retrospective. May just be a gag ref to that story)

Hurt is associated with a lot of red buttons – his sonic has red tip too (@Shazzbot – behave!!! ๐Ÿ˜‰ )

The TARDIS in flight halfway through looks very much like it’s spinning out of control

Matt hanging out of it in the next scene – flying over London – is that a callback to his regeneration entrance, way back in Eleventh Hour?

2 scenes with 10 and 11 – in one they both have glasses and Matt has a fez – in the other they don’t. Significant? Esp with Zygons about.

  7. More thoughts later but lots of squeee at the moment. Looks as if I’ll certainly have to be eating a bit of @Timeloop‘s humble pie re. The Moment.

Like the look of Hurt’s TARDIS. Looking forward to seeing more of it. Looks like it’s a hybrid of McGann’s and Eccleston’s — much like his costume. Also three TARDISes reminds me of the conversation we were having a while back about Vincent’s painting. Is some sort of chrono-collision going to be the cause of the explosion that causes the rips in time — something which I’m sure is going to be revisited here. (Also pretty convinced these days that that ‘silence will fall’ in the TARDIS in The Pandorica Opens was Hurt’s voice.)

Lots of call-outs to the AG past — Bad Wolf, the white horse. Like the idea that the Trafalgar Sq shenanigans might mean that we’re looking at something that’s going to tie into the Eleventh Hour too.

    So I say again, squeeeeee

  8. Is it just me, or is the shot of Matt as per the video’s start (what is that called, the picture/image which you see before starting the video to ‘play’?) showing some grey hair in his sideburns?

Also, fez … Amy’s glasses … has 11 just left Central Park?

  9. @JimtheFish – I may have to sharing that pie with you!

And agree with you re Hurt’s TARDIS.ย  I’d forgotten about the 3-TARDIS discussion – good point. I called it on Matt over London as Eleventh Hour too.

@Shazzbot – you’re right re it being Matt’s Central Park get-up – the fez jumps out too; but ti’s 2 Doctors with noticeable accessories (unlike the previous scene). Their chemistry looks great.

General thought – I’ve not chucked out the theory that the real Big Bad of the last 3 series could turn out to be the Doctor himself.ย  I know we’ve discussed this (at length haha) before but it always got knocked out on the grounds that it’s just too dark a place to go for teatime TV, and too much change to put on the character of the Doctor (he isn’t meant to develop that much, in many ways he is its (and our) anchor. But with Hurt in the frame, ie an alternative not-quite Doctor they can go as dark as they want. It also makes sense of all the mirroring/duplicate/alt universes refs and all the hints of doubles that have been scattered about (@Juniperfish Where the hell are you when we need you??!)ย  The Ultimate Foe?

@JimtheFish Don’t think it’s actually Hurt’s voice in the TARDIS but I agree that it could very well be his character (I got poopooed when I suggested that on the G thread for NotD. HA! we’ll show those of little faith).ย  That scene is definitely a Loose End that’s not been picked up on (as opposed to just a speculation loose end)

  10. @Shazzbot

Is it just me, or is the shot of Matt as per the video’s start (what is that called, the picture/image which you see before starting the video to ‘play’?) showing some grey hair in his sideburns?

I think that’s just what 3 years of being the Doctor does for you.ย  And he has aged about 3 centuries in this form ๐Ÿ˜‰

  11. @Timeloop – congratulations on ‘the moment’ btw. Even if it turns out to be misdirection, you were right that it might be re-used.

I have to get around making that list with their similarities.

To start you off, I made a list in post #17733, when I was trying to work out if Clara might be River and the Doctor’s daughter.

  12. @ScaryB I think, given the battered look, lack of St. John’s badge, and the style of boot treads in the sand, that’s Hurt Doctor’s TARDIS at the start. He’s landed and is heading for the little shack you see later. He’s on a mission, with his pack on his back, to find the big red button.

Which brings me to The Moment. Would something so powerful be kept in a shack where anyone could come along and press it? Unless it’s somewhere that no one could ever get to, or want to go to, (bubble Universe of some sort perhaps) except The Doctor.

  13. @Craig Took you to literally then.

If it is the Moment maybe it kills him to use it? And becomes (the new) 10?

@ScaryB “The TARDIS in the first shot โ€“ very, very battered, and whose footsteps are leading away from it?” My money is on the Hurt Doctor who has fought many fights and is tired of war.

“2 scenes with 10 and 11 โ€“ in one they both have glasses and Matt has a fez โ€“ in the other they don’t. Significant? Esp with Zygons about.” My guess is that they bump into each other there and tried to be “incognito”? Maybe they said at the same time that they are the Doctor to that off-screen character.

“General thought โ€“ I’ve not chucked out the theory that the real Big Bad of the last 3 series could turn out to be the Doctor himself.ย  I know we’ve discussed this (at length haha) before but it always got knocked out on the grounds that it’s just too dark a place to go for teatime TV, and too much change to put on the character of the Doctor (he isn’t meant to develop that much, in many ways he is its (and our) anchor. So he would be fighting his future selves? But his regenerations would always know what his plan is and therefore could always stop it.

@JimTheFish I’m not so squee-y right now. That trailer eliminates a lot of theories, doesn’t it?

  14. Anyway, Clara and the time vortex bracelet. That’s clearly meant to position Clara with River – but there’s several vortex manipulators wandering around the Whoniverse. UNIT might easily have got hold of one.

So I reckon it’s a bit of a tease. Whoever else Clara might be, she isn’t River. The TARDIS thinks the sun shines out of her little baby’s well-proportioned bottom, but Clara – Clara’s her No.1 Practical Joke Target.

  15. @Timeloop

So he would be fighting his future selves? But his regenerations would always know what his plan is and therefore could always stop it.

    Not necessarily.ย  You’re assuming

1 HurtDr is in the direct line of regenerations – he could be a branch line

2 HurtDr comes before the Doctors we’ve seen to date – what if he’s after Eleven (there’s been a lot of discussion about that)

As he exists simultaneously (no doubt timeywimeyily) with Ten and Eleven, then he presumably has independent and separate life

I’m not so squee-y right now. That trailer eliminates a lot of theories, doesn’t it?

Now you see, that is exactly the problem with bonkers theorising.ย  Take the advice of the wise @Bluesqueakpip – forget ALL theories when entering the real world of the Doctor, otherwise you won’t be able to enjoy the real thing when it’s shown – which would be a shame cos I think it looks amazing.ย  (I don’t care that it’s killed a zillion of my fave theories in the process)

  16. @ScaryB

    The Ultimate Foe?

Now โ€“ letโ€™s not sully this beautiful moment with talk of Trial of a Time Lord shall we?

Iโ€™ll come back with some proper thoughts later, but that was aces. I think there are supposed to be two this weekend? Iโ€™ll wait to watch it on the big screen tonight before posting some proper thoughts.

But – Vortex manipulator?! Need that rewatch of Name of the Doctor for River’s enigmatic line about her being mentally linked to Clara when she went into the Time Line.

  17. Just to echo as well, this really does look amazing. I was really happy knowing it was going to be Nick Hurran directing this. Doing the retrospectives, I think his episodes for Who (The Girl Who Waited, God Complex, Asylum of the Daleks & Angels Take Manhatten) show a really good eye for the material with a lot of imaginative flourishes.

  18. @Phaseshift I was teasing (as you know (wish I hadn’t thought of it actually ๐Ÿ˜‰ )); but his dark side would be a worthy opponent for our Doctor (what he would do with no moral brakes).

The mental link betwen River and Clara (in NotD) is explained in episode as being due to the conference call lines not being closed properly. However, it doesn’t explain why the Doctor is included in that – he “could always see” River. :sniff:

I find the image showing state of Gallifrey quite shocking – not that I have any love for the TimeLords, but the suggestion that the Daleks have that much power and are now in control is v scary.

Incidentally – presumably any additional knowledge Clara now has about anything can be explained by her having been in the Doctor’s timestream?

  19. @ScaryB “There is one live I have tried very hard to forget.” In Matts voice. Definitely before 11/12, don’t you think?

I don’t think I am in danger of ARSE (yet). Right now I am just really focused on banging out more details before we get to see it. But might as well lean back for a moment and enjoy the thrill of anticipation. Take a step back, so to say.

  20. OMG anyone though about Clara being a timelord in one of her incarnations? To give the Doctor the hint for the right TARDIS? What if that is why she has that Vortex Manipulater and knows how to use it?

  21. Finally seen it on a screen bigger than my phone on the train last night. Actually, it gives away very little. All the explodey bits.

A couple of things: Rose is with the Hurt Doctor (but will meet 9 for the first time?) Timey wimey.

No shots of Rose and 10 together. Maybe they won’t actually be together in the show (we have just assumed they will be). Perhaps she is only with the Hurt Doctor for Bad Wolf reasons.

Am hoping that the trailer tonight is a different, longer trailer. As I am languishing in Canada, and seeing the trailer on the BBC will be difficult (impossible),ย I am desperately hoping @wolfweed will be in full-scale upload mode!

  22. @Blenkinsopthebrave As it’s out there, I think they’ll probably be showing this trailer tonight even if it was originally intended for Sunday, and we’ll get the one that hasn’t leaked on Sunday. But perhaps not.

  23. great trailer

if matt smiths doctor is the doctors last regeneration

Then it would make sence that hurts doctor 8-9 , who holds the moment ,then has to activate that red key and end it all , becouse there are no regenerations left , when he uses his all regenerations , then he has to pull the triger

The ancient battle reaches its devastating conclusion , so hurt will activate the rassilion key , and then the 10th and 11th doctor will have to try to fix things .

its now obvious , ย the link between clara and river and rose

  24. @Craig – anyone could be a Zygon. David Cameron could be a … no hang on, forget that last. It’s all too likely. ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

I’m guessing that the Tennant Doctor’s adventure is Zygons trying to replace Queen Elizabeth I?

Or assassinate her? Ooh, yes. An assassination plot for the 50th – but not Kennedy.

  25. @Bluesqueakpip – it’s interesting that the fleeting shot we have of Joanna as Good Queen Bess in the trailer, is of her being chased – when her interview was all about freezing her arse off, and getting chapped hands, in a lap-lying grape-feeding session with Tennant.

But liking your assassination theory.ย  Ties into the original Nov 1963 broadcast issues nicely.

  26. Multiple Claras – quite likely when you’ve got the Impossible Girl who was split into hundreds of pieces throughout time/space. And, as mentioned, Zygons. (just saying again – don’t they look amazing?)

And I agree with @Blenkinsopthebrave‘s comment that actually – the trailer doesn’t tell us very much. It confirms lots of things we already knew – Hurt, Tennant, Rose, Zygons, Daleks, Gallifrey, TimeWar – and fulfils lots of hopes and dreams about how they would/will look. ย  But it could very easily be incorporated into 5 mins before the main titles – a recap of how we’ve got to wherever we end up before the title credits, and the main story.

So Elizabeth is Elizabeth I? (I missed that – of course, was Tennant not a “pal” of hers?).ย  Assassination plot by the Zygons – like it. (Oh goody – a whole new theory strand to consider ๐Ÿ˜ˆ )

Who’s the cosplaying* fangirl in the mini-trailer? And is that her again in the scene with Kate Stewart(s)? (see Wolfweed’s link to BlogtorWho scene breakdown)

Final thought for now – I love how it’s got a big grown up film look to it ๐Ÿ˜€

*I have learned SO much in this Forum. Inc so many new words – cosplay, shipping, fanfic, squeeee, BRB… hoe to include past, present and future tenses in one sentence that (sort of) makes sense!ย  Thank you all ::deep bow::

  27. One thing I haven’t learned though, is that blog posts don’t have post-post edit function ๐Ÿ™ (Apologies for first draft spellings and typos)

  28. @ScaryB

So Elizabeth is Elizabeth I? (I missed that โ€“ of course, was Tennant not a “pal” of hers?).

Of course, 10 in his elongated good-bye to the viewers, mentioned to the Ood that he’d made ‘Good Queen Bess’ well, … erm … not quite so good.ย  ๐Ÿ˜€

  29. But on a more serious note, that places the Tennant Doctor with Queen Elizabeth right at the end of his incarnation; so while Rose is in the story, it doesn’t seem to be from a period when she was travelling with the Doctor.

Hmmm… have they brought in the Eccleston Doctor by default? He doesn’t appear, but as @Blenkinsopthebrave suggests, Rose is brought in via Bad Wolf.

Okay, that would make a theme. The Tennant Doctor – at the end of his incarnation. The Eccleston Doctor – at the end of his incarnation. And the Smith Doctor – at the end of his incarnation.

  30. Wow…just wow! I cannot wait until the day of the doctor comes out!!

there are two people who are heavily connected to the use of a vortex manipulator; river song and of course our resident immortal jack harkness. Clara must have a connection to one of these…or maybe she is the doctors daughter.

i am leaning towards her having a major connection to river though because of the way she smiled just as she used it…. Hmm anyone got any thoughts?

  31. @Tennantmarsters2013 re vortex manipulators and who’s got one – there’s also the 51st century Dorium Maldovar, the man who can acquire your wildest dreams – which is where River got hers.

    Hmm anyone got any thoughts?

Er… yes quite a few!ย  Have a wee read at the board above your post. (Inc @Bluesqueakpip‘s link to River-Clara-Pond similarities #17733 )

  32. @Craig

Re the TARDIS at the start (and yes, I agree it’s likely to be Hurt’s)

    lack of St. John’s badge

    – niceย  ref to his non-Doctor status

  33. After….er….everybody with the humble pie*.

So, what percentage of the trailer do we think will be shown in the episode BEFORE the main credits run?
