@The Krynoid Man – Its no secret that Led Sep was deeply influenced by the blues and also went on to
influence many major current music makers — I think in all the arts there is always massive borrowing.
But what they did with their music was a revelation — 4 musicians that instinctually took the music to
a new place !

I discovered the Allah-Las recently – they are derivative of seventies garage sound and the lyrics of this one are rather retrograde too, but I love that guitar sound (they’re no Led Zep, but retro-pleasant…)

@lisa  oooh I love a puzzle!! I know some movies appeared a few times but out of all the clips I missed 13. Yay!  The two in blury close up kissin’ -no idea. I’m pretty proud of myself. Also, one Western -no idea and one of the very early B&W was too quick though I recognised….something. My hind-brain perked up and then went into hiding.

@thekrynoidman  I was humming. I bought the DVD of this for young Ilion when he was 5 and even though I loved it as a kid? He got nightmares. I had to give it away!

At our work’s New Year Party (we don’t have Christmas ones) we always have ‘skit and music’ time. We did this mash-up, though we added more ‘classical’ Pava-the-rotta and skipped others out. Also, we cheated: had five musicians with me on keyboard/ back up vocals. Someone gonged us off at about 5 mins 20  (in imitation of Red): I thought we did pretty well.

The lead singer had undies on his head. I think this lowered the tone, personally.

@Purofilion – So I’m not sure about which frame you are talking about but the minutes you gave
are a Cowboy on a horse and that might be Holden but at the very end of the vid I think that’s
John Wayne in the doorway. If you watch it on You Tube and if you look at the ‘more info’ part
underneath it tells all the movie answers. Glad you had fun with it! I like the way this guy
tried to match up the scenes somewhat to the music too. Plus he chose some ‘choice’ scenes.
Would like to see him make another!

Is also, for some reason, one of Metallica’s favourites. They play it as their intro at every show now.

But this is my favourite version – Ennio Morricone live (saw him a few years ago and it was amazing – found a new respect for the French horn).

@thekrynoidman I love that film from first frame to last and that final scene is groundbreaking, Morricone’s music lifting it, almost, to perfection. Leone builds on work he’d done in ‘For a Few Dollars More’ and takes the quick draw cliché out of the two-dimentional American western street, one man in front of the other, and puts it in the circular, three dimensional, Italian gladitorial arena once again. It was groundbreaking. Only his work on ‘Once Upon a Time in The West’ is better.

In terms of Leone, I think we’ve posted before on his stuff and have to agree with Craig on the marvelousness of Once Upon a Time in The West.

So, where were we? Oh yes, @barbaralefty mentioned Elbow and that reminded me of Guy Garvey’s appearance on Desert Island Discs.
I’ll admit I really like Guy Garvey. His “I’m a normal guy, me” shtick may be well rehearsed now but I believe it.
and I like most of their music.

Anyway, he also nailed why this is such a great song. He was talking (if memory serves) about artists who get to the stage where they can write a simple great song.

Its romantic (Valentines coming soon and in case I don’t get to post before then), and its got Tom Waits.

I don’t know if any of you remember a little gem called Antz. It came out around the same time as A Bugs Life, but I think it’s actually better.This is for several reasons. Firstly, the main character is voiced by Woody Allen which makes it comedic gold in my eyes. Secondly the story is much darker and adult, having themes of war, individuality and totalitarianism. The third reason is the soundtrack, particularly the music from the opening credits

So…. I was thinking of putting something here for @pedant who it seems is going through the hell of moving.

So obviously I thought of Professor Longhair but realised it wasn’t as good as I’d remembered (memories huh?).

But it made me think of Jools Holland who introduced me to Professor Longhair through a casual mention in a programme I had taped on a VHS. Mine was as dodgy after multiple re-watching as this guy’s (though thank the gods he uploaded it!).
The first snippet has a great bit of boogie woogie followed by more…

anyway, this has nothing to do with moving, nor anything for pedant. So, instead of Houses in Motion or anything I thought of Home by LCD Soundsystem – a band I had completely ignored until @craig made me think I should listen.

oh, and btw puro – the “what 3 songs would you like to listen to right now?” was my rather-better-version-of-me’s better question to the standard (and crap) “what’s your top 5 songs?”.

I only vaguely remember mentioning it, so staggered that you do! Not sure what 3 songs I thought of back then (and now I’m too scared to choose 3 in case they’re the same 3!)

but I really should choose something….. so…. erm….. well I read this today and chuckled.
And here are the described performances. Not sure which he was on for which.

I love the description of how they finally captured/mixed the carnage they were trying to get (especially as production at the time seemed to want to clean up the sound) but tbh at the time I just loved the energy (which I now realise had a lot to do with the driving bass, though I didn’t know it at the time!)

and just to have something to embed, here’s the video (god it starts brightly – like Roxy Music*, songs that just start after the intro is jettisoned!)

@whisht a great song -in every possible way. This is one I used to demo how ‘songs work’. Yep, that driving bass, minimal change in time signature, change of pace, energetic voices, smashin’ sax and just the right amount of time without repetition.

@whisht that was a …weird video! But I do love the song. Do you remember the clunky phone message machines where you’d leave your own: “hallo, you’ve reached ______please leave your number and then piss off” type o’ thing? Well, I never said anything, I just played edited bits of “Hallo my darlin’s”, which a friend thought was so strange that he contacted a talk show and my ‘story’ ended up on local ABC radio as one of the best personal message set-ups -or something. I had it there for years and then the machine broke down and the phone with it. Shame.

If you do that kind of thing now, the interference from electrical wavelengths causes massive distortion. Also, people tend to think you’re nuts, so I leave the pre-set American dialogue: “hallo, you’ve reached blabla bla and they are un-able. To. Take. Your. Phone-Call” Tedious much.

No room for the funnies anymore, man.

Peter Whylie (spelt wrong I’m sure) was an original member of Teardrop and later formed Wah!  Hilarious. What a total disjunction. Cope = nutter,  but a good nutter, although gold standard insane!

Listened to any classical music lately? 🙂 Any more medieval music? You could consider another blog -part 2 of…something….coz it was awesome.

@whisht yeah, memory so good I confuse sax with the bloody trumpet. It sounded like a sax to me back then and trumpets were rarely used in similar era bands in Oz -that’s my excuse & I’m stickin’ to it.

Thanks so much for the feedback! Yes, we try to put our own spin on stuff so it can sometime sound quite removed from the original artist. We did a version of Gnarls Barkleys ‘Crazy’ which ended up sounding more like Johnny Cash!

Further attempts to get caught up with all I’ve been missing around here! Random bits of music occur to me during the day. Earlier today I had reason to think about the phrygian mode (that’s the one that always sounds as if it’s ending on mi instead of do). I don’t think it gets nearly enough love- what do you think, @purofilion? So here as a belated happy birthday to @whisht (just because you might think it’s cool), are two versions of a renaissance chanson usually attributed to Josquin des Pres, in phrygian mode: the lovely ensemble led by Jordi Savall, and a gorgeous cornetto version by Bruce Dickey.

That description of Phrygian as “ending on the mi” is great for people like me who’ve never studied music. I really appreciate that.

I really enjoyed the music but must admit I prefer the sung version.
But it happily reminded me experiencing the Hilliard Ensemble’s Officium with Garbarek last year, which was amazing.
I’d gone off the album after hearing it a few times when I first came across it. It just was a bit… cold or something. But when I heard that the Hilliard were retiring and this was the last concert, I forlornly went to buy tickets and was surprised that there were some left!!

Live it was an incredible experience. The difference between a recorded and a live experience was vast.

As for Tina – well that was my track for Amy so yes yes yes!
I really should try again to get people to nominate songs for other companions!!

So – its Mother’s Day.
Which is a bit like that sign on the London Underground above the seat near the doors that says “This seat is for people who may need it more than you [ie pregnant women/ older people/ people with crutches]” because… we need reminding of that. And just the one seat, mind.

Or could it be just commerce seeing an opportunity… but rather than get distracted about the commercialisation of emotions, I’ll play ball and use the opportunity for a couple of songs for Mothers!

First I’ll try Mother of Pearl by Roxy Music – which also seems to be about finding love which isn’t all “love and glory/ its a pantomime”.

And Requiem for My Mother – Durutti Column (because its beautiful and poignant).

But I’ll be deliberately tangential (moi??) and link to this wonderful album I seem to have misplaced.
Delicate, Scandinavian, all little bits and twiddlings.
Probably best on headphones, but what the hell – blast it out of some good speakers!
