Oh!! He had twine in his pocket!! In The Mind Rober, the Doctor finds a roll of twine in the cave.  He says it is an invitation: a classical way of getting through a maze.  Could this be a clue? Has Sindy appeared in any shows before?

@janetteb I’ve been pondering Clara’s responses in this ep, and it seems they are actually rather realistic.  For instance,  the trauma Clara experiences after seeing death.  What she may have envisioned as a fun adventure – and her way of finally seeing her “101 places” –  has suddenly become a bit more serious.  The Professor recognizes the signs of shock and insistently asks questions about her life back home.  She is unable to answer because she is in shock, so he persists by trying new techniques.  Likewise with the singing at the end.  She is scared, perhaps more scared than before because the IW is no longer there to reason with.

In RoA, when she doesn’t know where she wants to go …. My gosh, I would probably be the same!  How can you ask for something specific when you have no idea what’s out there.  Same applies to checking-in about her performance.  I think it reveals a character who is eager for adventure, and experience, but has not had much of either.   Sadly, I think I’m back to looking at Clara as a genuine mystery.

In Classic Who, the Time Lords seemed able to exercise significant control over the Doctor, even determining his regeneration.  Is this correct (I’m only a minnow)?  I wonder what their connection is to the use of the Doctor’s name.  Regardless, knowing that his future self entrusted River to be present for the revelation of his name, or to be his support when he ‘had’ to reveal his name / utter his name / ask the question, is what prompts 10 to trust her in the moment.

@htpbdet , yea, the connection with Susan’s supposed Gallifreyan name isn’t cannon, but it was such a lovely rabbit hole. I’m not a fan of the Bad Wolf idea, as I’m not a fan of Rose.  Besides, what better red herring than Clara wearing Red!

This from the RadioTimes, “…each episode is now touching on a different Doctor’s era for this 50th anniversary mini-season. The Rings of Akhaten had a shade of the first Doctor when the 11th said he’d visited before with his (rarely mentioned) granddaughter, and later he even faced a foe called “Grandfather”. Cold War honours Troughton, as discussed. And the next episode, Hide, touches on third Doctor Jon Pertwee’s territory. It’s set in 1974 and features… ah, but that would be telling…”

What the heck is going on with the wolf references?  If I remember, Rose *became* the wolf, right?  After taking the time vortex into herself.  Was she then the wolf all along, or is the wolf the time vortex itself?

@haveyoufedthefish , I think it’s significant, as well.  Having watched prop makers at work, I know they don’t usually put such detail into a piece.  lol.  OH.  Maybe somewhere in there are the fields of Trenzalore ?? 

Also, I had been interpreting the “fall of the eleventh” as a downfall, but it’s really Fall, as in the American version of Autumn, isn’t it??  The autumn of one’s life…coming to terms with one’s age. Perhaps this is why, in ROA, he finally mentions his granddaughter.

Slightly off-topic, but I watched a portion of SITL last night and found the Doctor’s phrasing in the line about his name more than a little odd. He tells River, “there’s only one reason I would ever tell anyone my name.  there’s only one time I could.”

When I originally viewed this ep, I thought the line just referred to a marriage tradition, or something.  Like, maybe on Gallifrey given names are formal and only used for a particular ceremony.  But watching this segment last night it seemed much more ominous!  There is only 1 time the Doctor can, or is able, to share his name with anyone.  And maybe this is why River apologises so profusely.  By revealing to the Doctor that he shared his name, it gives him foreknowledge that this dreaded event does indeed happen sometime in his near future.

I found this screen shot of the painting used in the ep.  It seems to have loads of numbers on it!  I can’t verify whether this is actually the painting….. Anyone here know anything about these numbers?

@besd1 – you are right!  This is the first TARDIS since the 63 version to feature the St. John Ambulance…  He’s a Doctor?  Receives calls for help?  returning to his roots?

Good grief.  I just re-watched AOTD and the catch phrases are littered throughout the entire ep.  As soon as the Doctor, and crew, are on board the Dalek ship, Rory asks how much trouble they are in.  The Doctor responds, “Out of 10?  11!”  Then he tells Amy to, “make them remember you.”  Why would Amy need to make the Dalek’s ‘remember’ her?  When the music starts playing, the Doctor does this strange thing (which could easily just be the use of humour to buy him time)…He says, “It’s me. … I got buried in the mix.”  This was in response to the Dalek’s asking what or who was responsible for the music.  Later on the planet, the Doctor tells Amy that the nanocloud converts you by transforming, “your feelings, your memories.”

Of course, poor Oswin has the catch-phrases of her ‘first time out’ and “show me the stars.”

Have the Daleks converted the Doctor?  and are there discussions on this forum regarding that episode?? 🙂

@phileasf – That was beautiful storytelling.

@thommck – The fruit bit stuck out to me, as well.  As did the Doctor using his sonic to ‘test’ it.  Since when did he start testing things, unless River was around to chastise him?  Could he have gone back for the piece Clara bit into, and taken it into the TARDIS for more testing – which is why the door was properly locked?

Holy Moly – could it be that something DID change places with him during the sun / planet / parasite thing and that’s why he suddenly gets a new sonic AND makes changes (that I hear are sort of battle changes) to the TARDIS??

Also, I think I posted a spoiler on the 50th thread by mistake!! A pic from the filming yesterday morning showed the Doctor hanging from under the TARDIS, with Clara inside.  It appears Sexy is taking off without him.  Has this happened before?  Is there a precedence for the TARDIS leaving him behind intentionally?

The filming at Trafalgar Square showed the Doctor hanging from the bottom of the TARDIS, with Clara inside.  Has the TARDIS ever left the Doctor before??

@nekko, thank you for sharing the bit about (os)Wald being the German for forest.  It is yet another connection to River;  I rather like the theory that Clara is connected, via CAL, to River.   Which doesn’t really fit with Sexy locking her out, but there have been too many references to leaves, forests, paper, books, etc.

I have also been wondering whether the Doctor is the one sleeping.  Is the Doctor we are witnessing in the episodes really  his double encountering crafty stories of remembrance woven into the tale–namely, by River.  This was prompted by the repetition of the Clara-code “RYCBAR.”  I know several here promote the doppelgänger theory, and I wonder whether those of you thinking that way envision a scenario like Amy, where her actual ‘self’ was kept asleep in some other location, while her double moved about in time and space?

Since I have now dipped my toe in (as it were), can I say how delighted I am to read the theories and brainstorming here!  So pleased to have found these forums via the Guardian.
