@lula – Ah, yup. We are east of the city, outside Midleton. Suffering through 15 months of winter!! It was spring just the other day, at least..I thought it was. Today is baltic again, with hail! oh, the joys of it all. What brought you here?

Random pondering that may or may not make sense. Blame it on the faux Mexican food. I need to give up and realise Cork can not offer me true TexMex. 🙁

The Medusa Cascade. It’s a time rift that is somehow connected to Gallifrey. The Daleks pulled the 27 planets there when they wanted to send a blast that would destroy the timelock – or am I getting those confused. Regardless, it is a rift in time and space. It was inside that rift that Ten decided he didn’t want to regenerate and the meta-crisis Doctor came into being – which technically made the hand the 11th Doctor, right? But what else can happen when you send out regenerative energy in a time rift? I don’t know, but could it be Clara?

I watched Matt’s intro to JttCotT today (before the faux mex) and he says something rather curious: that the TARDIS is more powerful than all of us…with a mind of its own and a soul of its own and ideas of its own… How are new TARDIS born? TARDIS coral?

@phileasf  not finished with your list yet, but when you mentioned milk….The Doctor poured himself, and then drank without spitting, a glass of whiskey in Snowmen (dont think it was Brandy??) Clara makes a pointed comment about whiskey in Hide, “11th worst thing”

@bluesqueakpip – After re-watching the Snowmen, I was inclined to believe, as others have expressed as well, that we are viewing the encounters with Clara out of order. Which makes your theory about the “Young Doctor learning about her past” very appealing! It could also help explain why it seems the Doctor has forgotten the GI, yes?

I’m still not a supporter of the ‘Clara as Daughter’ theory, but I concede its merits. My personal preference about their relationship aside, I do love the idea of new – NU – Time Lords…or whatever they might be! The image @lula grabbed confirming the dual hearts leaves all sorts of possibilities!

My question to those with more Who knowledge: could River have visited Gallifrey?

    ardaraith @replies

I am more inclined to see Clara as a version of River, or … I don’t know. I just can’t imagine they would have included the big kiss in Snowmen if it was a familial relationship. What I can imagine; however, is Professor Song finding a timey wimey way to regenerate.

@haveyoufedthefish and @lula – Regarding american accent for actors. We are taught to use Standard American, which is unaccented and hyper-articulated. “Standard speech” as it is also known, is spoken nowhere. Most American film actors do not come from a theatre background, so you hear their regional dialect. Whereas presenters and actors with theatre training use SA / SS. It’s the same concept as RP.

an addendum to my own rambling:

First, I admit to being woefully ignorant of Classic Who lore.  I have gone back and watched several of the stories, and all of season 26. But thinking of the Doctor’s name as a formula has me pondering….  I normally expect the Doctor to behave in a human way.  In a sense, I have anthropomorphised him.  Gallifreyan culture and world view must be very different from our own.  In human fairy and folk tales, names are often ‘function’ based.  As has been discussed here on another board, there is a fun mingling of science and magic on Doctor Who.  As a social scientist, I find the ‘hard’ sciences moving ever closer to magic in their discoveries!  If the Doctor’s name is functional, perhaps his chosen moniker — The Doctor — describes the function, somewhat:  a formula that heals.

    @bluesqueakpip @htpbdet @whisht @whohar

I heard that the Doctor’s name is stated as a mathematical formula in one of the Classic Who series.  If that is the case, his name is functional.  What if….. his ‘formula’ is used to create / harness a TARDIS – or at least build the mechanism capable of containing them ?  There have been many instances recently of the TARDIS behaving strangely, even exploding.  The image for the series finale shows a broken TARDIS window.  What if the TARDIS dies, or needs to regenerate, and the Doctor must use his name (the formula) to construct a new one?

@htpbdet –  My logic about 10 possibly thinking River a Time Lord was tied to the notion of his name being a key to undue the time lock.  Who else would be around to witness that, but another Time Lord.  It was a long shot.  I am intrigued now with a different line of thinking, namely this discovery that the Doctor’s name is a forumla.

    ardaraith @replies

@htpbdet and @juniperfish – Be still my heart!!! I knew from the tone of the Doctor’s voice, and the words he chose in SitL when speaking to River about her knowledge of his name, “there’s only one time I could,” that it was a weighty and non-celebratory event, as mentioned above, “why the name should or should not be evoked.”  If he used his name to seal the time lock, to make the Moment….. then uttering it would be a significant event!  And if undoing the time lock is the event – which could potentially lead to the end of the universe (as the Time Lords were about to do that, in order to save themselves), I can see why the Silence would want the Doctor to remain Silent!  Also, it would mean that Doctor 10 thought River could potentially have been a Time Lord – another reason to give her the burial he did?  (didn’t Time Lords on Gallifrey get uploaded into the Matrix?)

Either way, this new possibility as a use of the name is terribly exciting!

Clara as Mary Poppins. While watching Snowmen I automatically connected the two. When BoSJ finally aired, I was eager to look for this connection in her more ‘modern’ portrayal but got sidetracked. I’m back now to considering this. It’s interesting to note that the Mary Poppins adventures took place over a total of eight books. There are eight episodes in 7.b, with the thoroughly modern Clara.

Someone else here (sorry, am not finding the reference) already mentioned the carpet bad that is bigger on the inside.

@scaryb has noted the umbrella connection.

Chronologically, the books are ‘out of order.’ Adventures that happened during the time of books 2 & 3, are written about in book 4.

She arrives with the East wind, and departs with the West…but only after the children have learned their lesson.

She is utterly unexplained. In other words – Impossible. (in addition to being pert, witty, vain [hello TARDIS reference, “the only image you would esteem”], and high energy)

@bluesqueakpip – That’s a wonderful description of how important Clara is for a re-boot, and the Doctor finally (?) looking toward the future – or at least, being present and putting his past behind him.

So, this new theory (redshift and blueshift doppler effect) is a NEW way of viewing the blue / red theory, isn’t it?

@juniperfish likened the red bow-tie to “good” Doctor, who travels with companions who keep him ‘in check;’ while the blue bow-tie Doctor is icy, unfeeling and travels with no companions. According to this theory, the significance of the Doctor deflating the blue balloon in Hide foreshadows his growing darkness.

According to this new “blueshift’ theory, the blue represents the present or the future (possibilities), while the red represents retreating objects, or the past.

    Do these theories harmonise?

    #6363
    ardaraith @replies

Hold the Horses…or the wagons, or whatever that saying is. If Clara is the show AND the producers / writers, and the 50th year is paying homage, as it were, to the past while looking ahead to the future, then it’s Clara, not the Doctor, who dies again – and very soon! Where are we with Hide? Number 4 ? This theory could support the blue / red colour theory, as proposed by @juniperfish . The future death (again) of Clara brings us firmly into the realm of blue bow-tie Doctor! Though we know she comes back, because the show did…in 2005.

OH!! and what happens metaphorically when the show goes silent..or dorment…. The Time War. And that is when our Doctor goes full on BLUE.

@badwolf99 – I’m kinda liking your theory. It was mentioned several times in this ep that paradoxes, by and large, resolve themselves. What if that is exactly ‘what’ Clara is (hence the Doctor not asking ‘who’): an unresolved paradox. Simple as that.

eep!! Plagiary! My career as a Doctor Who Theoriser may be over! I failed to cite my source on that pic. It was not my eagle eye, or my eye heavily influenced by chocolate martinis (alas), that spotted the mention of ‘rose’ – which, by the way…”roses are red, violets are blue.” Any sign of violets in the eps?? But @Feralcast noticed that “our” universe was represented by the blue balloon in the Doctor’s demonstration to Emma. That’s not good. That means that, presently, in “our” universe, ice in the Doctor’s heart is coming.

Also of note, in reference to the colour red: the item used by the Doctor to tie the first, or outside door, of the house closed, when he and the time traveler were running from the Crooked Man, was a RED cord of some sort.  The camera stayed on it for a moment too long to be insignificant.

What if Clara is not connected to River at all? Well, other than perhaps River knowing who Clara is because she was present at ‘the only time [the doctor]could’ say his name.  I am going to throw a completely different idea out.  What if Clara is someone from Gallifrey – but not Susan?  Is it conceivable that ‘love’ split itself through time and space to reach the Doctor – the ‘monster’ who needs a companion?

The TARDIS shows Clara her own image because it is the only one that Clara would ‘esteem.’ That is a great little slap – but also a sort of test.  Sexy then explains that she will die if she travels to the pocket universe, which means Clara would, too.  But Clara doesn’t hesitate – she is still following her Mother’s memory, and the promise to ‘always find’ her (which was said in Cross’ RoA).

    So many delightful parallels.

All the mentions of love.  We know that so many love and have loved the Doctor, but who does the Doctor love?  Are his hearts capable of feeling that emotion anymore?  In each of these episodes where love has been discussed, what I see in the Doctor’s reaction is an intellectualization.  And the mention in this week’s ep to a sliver of ice…. his heart is ice – not easily touched.  It’s time for the Doctor to let himself feel again.

Oh, my!  What a great show! It had bits of everything, in addition to be fast paced and exciting.  Was that seriously the eye of harmony??? And I absolutely didn’t expect the psychic to warn Clara about THE DOCTOR!!! and did anyone else pick up that bit about LOVE being able to send out a call across time and space, so that it emerges in different times (I need to go back and see exactly what those lines were)?  I couldn’t help but think that Clara IS the Doctor’s call for help – or someone who loves him very much (like River), sending out a call across time and space!!

@Shazzbot – Regarding Clara’s POV…. that is a really interesting idea.  What about a new crazy theory!  Could all these “storybook” or “action film” episodes actually be Clara’s dream?  I was initially convinced the Doctor was dreaming these “adventures” while being held by the Silence, but I’m losing my resolve.

The story points that stand-out to me:

    1. the Doctor’s coldness/distance toward Clara after the initial rush to find her in his Monk garb  (to me, his behavior reads as distrusting and keeping at a distance)

    2. the distinctly ‘fictional’ tone to the episodes.

    3. the generally inpersonal tone of the eps – at least between the Doctor and Clara

Overall, I am excited beyond belief about the upcoming episodes.  Promotional art and news are being released in such a way as to make the whole thing feel ‘epic’ and much larger than an episodic.

On the Cold War thread, someone (who I won’t tag here, in case they don’t want to read spoilers) mentioned again how the strange shot with Clara regaining consciousness on the sub indicated POV.  What if all these episodes are really her dream? That none of these adventures are actually happening, and *that’s* what we discover in the finale?  It is certainly a rather impossible idea.

I just saw the new batch of posters for the upcoming eps, and I continue to be struck with their fictional quality.  They feel like ‘stories.’ I recently watched The Mind Robber, and it featured an ‘intelligence’ who enjoyed putting people into ‘stories.’   Regardless of the current plot or story arc, the feeling evoked from each one of these episodes so far is that I’m watching the Doctor and Clara in a ‘story.’  The reviews have even mentioned the nod to various films….
