No theory,  because it’s a new era. No big song and dance number to lead it out. And I loved it. This entire series has led me, as an adult viewer, to contemplate, to care about the real world. The Doctor doesn’t feel out of reach, or out of touch. It feels relatable and immanent.

Hats and bow ties off to the new direction. I’m on board.

@bluesqueakpip That was my take, as well.  I was actively looking for the troll, and other fairytale characters.  Even the rope, or bread crumbs, to get you back home!

I also think this ep is foreshadowing for Ryan’s dad to make an appearance.

Yea, I’m an utter fan girl now. I loved that episode! Just …so much YES! It was touching, weird, human, real.

I just had the biggest fan girl rant about the brilliant storytelling this season.  We can’t change the past, our hands are tied, but we can act in the present.  We need not fear the power of “kings or queens” when we act together.  There is no magic wand to wave.  It’s up to us, together, to act against racism, xenophobia, sexism, and blind hate.  It’s hard, and there is no guarantee, but in the end it’s the cure for that feeling of helplessness that seeps into our souls and fills us with dread.

Also, don’t cut down the lone white thorn in the field.  We all know what lives in the hollow hill.

Don’t pop the bubble wrap at crimbo.

and please, please have a rethink about the tooth fairy.

I wept like a baby. This Doctor, with her make-it-herself attitude, science lessons, trust in her companions, and love – yet, by golly, still fierce in protection, I’m hooked.

I’ve got nothing to add, except to say I am thoroughly enjoying this new era.  I like the storytelling and focus on relationships, each story offers learning opportunities,  and portrays problem solving through team-work.  It might lack the excessively complex inner show referencing of the Moffat era, which lent itself to theorizing, but I end each show with a smile on my face and a silly text to my daughter (the other Whovian in the house), so that’s a big plus in my book.

Yea, I’m sold.  I have enjoyed every one of the new episodes.  This one was scary, emotional, sciency, and funny.  I really like that the Doctor got explicit consent from the companions about coming along (and the TARDIS even watched for and observed this with that big blue geometric shape).  I was overjoyed to see bubble wrap in the time vortex at the beginning (one of my early memories of Who was a green bubble wrap monster).  I also rather like that the bad guys simply leave at the end, because that’s life.  We persist, we stand as best we can for what we believe, yet the bad guys aren’t tidily disposed of.  So yea, really enjoying this new Who.

@rob and @miapatrick I also thought Graham was going to drive the bus.  His utter despair standing there at the end was gut wrenching.  And Ryan, such a good hearted kid, being spoken to like that…. my heart hurt. I cried multiple times during this one.

I am really enjoying the humanity of these episodes.

Better and better! Ryan reminds me of my son, I just love him.  When he was going to take out the aliens like the video game and then ran back screaming – perfect pitch of innocent little boy.  I wept when the TARDIS found her!  and she said she loved her!! :squee:  The theme of people working together, oh how we need that in our world right now.  The hint of deeper arcs with the “Timeless Child” – hidden from her, the outcast, abandoned,  and unknown, said to music that sounded like…  a lullaby?  I was thrilled with the ride. Again, please?

Joining the chorus to say I loved it.   I enjoyed getting to know the future reluctant companions early on with the Doctor nowhere in sight.  I really cared about them. I liked seeing the Doctor from the point-of-view of the humans. That was a breath of fresh air, and really lent a bit of strangeness to the Doctor.  Seeing the Doctor off in the distance watching Ryan try to ride that bike at the end and fail each time was just as emotional as when Nan fell to earth and died.  I like that the humans are accidental companions and the whole bunch are now adventuring in space alone, without the Tardis.  I got a bit of the Doctor’s incomprehension of human loss at the end when they were all talking after the funeral service.  Oh, and the Doctor making her own sonic!  I watched this with my aerospace engineer daughter and she “whooped” out loud at that point.  Every young woman needs her own workshop!  Yea, I really liked it!  Welcome back Doctor!

    ardaraith @replies

I was chatting to my daughter tonight and she proposed the most bonkers theory of all…….

    ready?

    Clara is the TARDIS!!

Clara was able to go to Gallifrey, even though its time-locked and outside the universe.  Clara wears an infinity loop on her cardi.  She went into the Doctor’s time-stream inside the TARDIS.  There have been several recent references to when she will die, but she doesn’t really – Clara lives forever (claricles, etc).  She has a unique relationship with the TARDIS and recently made a comment about how embarrassing it is to meet yourself, but she never has? We don’t know how the beings that the Time Lords constrain to ‘be’ TARDIS are created or where they’re from, but perhaps it’s “jumping into a time-stream”, like the untempered schism?  (has more been said elsewhere about the origin of these beings?)  Perhaps that is why it’s so terrifying to look into it?

Perhaps Clara is a TARDIS being born?

Clara is the impossible girl, born to save the Doctor.  The TARDIS is always with the Doctor, and always takes him where he needs to go.

may be reaching, but it sure was fun!

I absolutely enjoyed that! It was creepy, scary, clever, and surprising.  If I were a child, I wouldn’t be able to sleep alone for ages! (Ok, maybe as an adult, too :gulp:)

The little girl at school who gives Clara trouble, and Danny seems connected to (can’t recall her name), appears destined for significance. She reminded me of a mouthy River. So many possible threads!

The theory that the Doctor–or Clara–sneak back later, hide under the blanket and return the soldier, is entirely….possible.

    What a fantastic episode!

There were no babies or cot in sight, but I enjoyed it anyway. I loved how Matt played the regeneration. It was exuberant, which is how his time has always felt to me. I do wonder about that Papal ‘mainframe’ – is this a River connection?

It really is a brand spanking new start: new set of regenerations, Time Lords that would come in “peace”, and a Doctor who may not ‘remember’ all those past lines.

That trailer seems quite spoofy to me; very over-the-top (or does it just remind me of an American ‘action’ film?). I will keep my hope in Moffat.  After the deliciousness that was the 50th, my fingers (and bow-ties) are crossed that the Christmas Special will be just as happy-making.

I have a BG question. Which episode featured the Master and an evil Time Lady? I watched this some time ago, and only have a vague memory that they hid their TARDIS in a cave, and that the Time Lady hinted that she and the Doctor had been married/partnered/close in the past. Help?

speaking of bonkers theories!!  @PennyInTheAir proposed *this* nugget months ago:

But ‘my’ version of bonkers theorizing did segue to River (because of her psychic link with Clara in TNoTD, and she did follow her all the way to Trenzalore) that maybe I could be wrong. And maybe blood is calling to blood. When Clara jumped into the doctor’s timestream, maybe River (still psychically linked, followed right along with her. Keeping her company (or should I say, the claracles), as her/their Mom. (haven’t quite figured out how to make her corporeal) But I do think it’s very feasible for her to still be connected to Clara within the time stream.

    ardaraith @replies

Oh, hey!  The cot is in play!  @Juniperfish, I may need to live dangerously and join the wager!

Smith regenerates into Capaldi and Clara gasps “grand-father”?

Talk about catching my breath!  What a perfect little bow (tie).  But Who is in the cot??

I don’t think we are done with River’s story.  She may not be present anymore, but Moffat loved her character too much.  He wove her into so much of his storytelling, that I would be flabbergasted if her influence has well and truly played out.  It makes me wonder…. has our current Doctor, under Moffat’s hand, mentioned his family (child(ren)/granddaughter) more than other regenerations?

As we have discussed before, River’s line about the psychic link with Clara, followed by ‘spoilers’, is too blatant to simply be cheeky commentary as she finally ‘dies’.  She is hinting, letting the Doctor know, maybe for the last time, that there is more to this story.

Who was it that questioned whether this Clara is actually the original, or whether she is also a Claricle? If we have not met the real ‘child’ yet, that would explain why the TARDIS is iffy about her: she isn’t natural (beg pardon, that is someone else’s well thought theory, but I don’t recall who).  What IF……WHAT if…..the Claricle we see now is about to be the perfect Nanny for Clara, River’s daughter??

@curvedspace – That article is cherry picking elements to build a case around.  They are completely discounting many examples, as mentioned brilliantly above.

I have a bonkers theory to toss in the pot.  🙂

As I said on the DotD thread, I believe they are still in the Doctor’s time stream.  I think he is struggling to remember, and get Clara to remember, in order to bring them out.  In the same way Amy had to remember in order to bring him out of the alternate universe, and to “find” Rory again.  He continually asked Clara in DotD if she remembered.  Also, on 4th watch, they do several close-ups of Matt’s eyes in key scenes where he is “remembering”.

In the time stream, they are limited to visiting times and places the Doctor already has or will.  It still makes changing his mind about the Time War significant, because he is acting on his own time stream in the same way the GI or the Claricles do.  We have no idea what impact this change will have once he is out of his time stream.  But that does not help him at Trenzalore.  As @dickiegarvey mentioned on the DotD thread, I believe telling Tennant about the grave at Trenzalore will set-up the solution, much as the sonic/wood, mutli-Doc/Gallifrey solution played out.

First, the War Doctor says of himself in DotD that he caused Silence to fall in the universe.  The mantra of the religious order bent on killing the Doctor is, “Silence must fall”.  The Doctor has changed his time stream, the Time Lords no longer fall, and the universe is not silenced.  Could they have developed because of the change the Doctor made, and the return of the Time Lords?

Secondly, in NotD we are told his time stream is collapsing in on itself, much like a collapsing star.  Is his death going to create a big bang, of sorts?  Will it re-set the Doctor?  What does anyone know about the mythology of the Time Lords?  I don’t know much about it, but my bonkers theory is that the Doctor always goes to Trenzalore, and Gallifrey always has a Time War so the Doctor can freeze it in pocket universe and search for it.  In essence, the universe always collapses (his death) and is reborn (the parallel universe).  It sets Capaldi up to be the beginning, just like Hartnell, trying to return home.

I admit, the threads of this made much more sense late last night, after watching for the 4th time and theorising when I should have been sleeping.

    #21471
    ardaraith @replies

Theory:  Does anyone else think they are still in the Doctor’s Time Stream?  Clara was very familiar with the TARDIS, snapping her fingers for the door to close; she said the Doctor “always” talks about the Time War (since when?); and the Doctor was reading advanced quantum mechanics.  I propose they have not figured a way out of the Time Stream, and in going back into Tennant’s stream, telling him about Trenzalore, it enables the Doctor to find a solution.  Does that even make sense??

Clara was also using language that I’ve heard River use, such as “I always know” and noticing the young age in Hurt’s eyes.  hmmm

@pedant I also heartily apologise  for using the royal “we”.  My kingdom barely extends past my front door, and even that is questionable.  However, electronic interference in translating rogue to rouge could be the result of Clara sending a message….the Doctor is a woman!  (or a cool cross-dresser)

At the beginning of the special, when the Doctor and Clara see the painting, he says, “There is a man who commits a crime that will silence the universe.”  Silence Must Fall.  Could the Silence be a reaction against his interference in his own time stream? more to make me go, “hmmm.”

    #21372
    ardaraith @replies

@denvaldron – I believe the Doctor was ON the High Council.  There was a cartoon released (where was that?) that showed a member of the High Council referring to the Doctor as having gone rouge.  We do know that the war has been going on a very long time, long enough for the 9th (?? can we refer to the War Doctor as the 9th?) to know about the travesties unleashed by the Time Lords.  We know many entire planets were destroyed during the war.  In fact, they indicate in the special that the first planet destroyed was that of the Zygons. If the Doctor made the choice to engage with the Time War, they certainly would have made him part of the High Council.  After all, he was once Lord President! 🙂

    #21367
    ardaraith @replies

@juniperfish – great review!! I think some on here should be writing the public reviews!  Have you read the drivel out there?

An important update to your excellent ideas.  You say, “The High Council in the “Day of the Doctor” seemed more bewildered than intent on becoming non-corporeal entities. This made Hurt Doctor’s choice grittier of course, because he was not faced with a mad President intent on the annihilation of everything, but with children running through burning streets.”

Yet there is one small line, at 9:52 that ties all we already know together with what we are seeing.  First, a few moments before, the single soldier with the gun radios to the High Council with the ominous report, “Priority Omega”.  Then, at 9:52, we see a commander and his team, with the caption: Gallifrey, the War Room.

Soldier: The High Council is in emergency session.  They have plans of their own.

Commander: To hell with the High Council.

We see here that the scenes shown to us compliment what we already know is happening with the High Council, and also inform us that the regular folks of Gallifrey don’t know what the High Council is deciding, at that very moment–but the Doctor does.

I adored this special.  It was full of Awesome!

@phaseshift – Ah!!  Yes.  I am still very confused about that particular prophesy.  They refer to themselves ‘as’ the silence, yet the prophesy is related to the Doctor falling at Trenzilore.  It doesn’t make sense to me.  Why are they on earth? HTPBDET Imagine, though, that McGann does appear

I recently saw McGann here in Dublin.  He was / is performing at The Abbey.  On an interview for Irish radio, he was questioned about his role as The Doctor, and how he gets roles, in general.  He replied that, “one never knows until the Eleventh Hour.”  (emphasis mine)  I immediately thought – he IS in the 50th!!

@fatmaninabox @scaryb , et al. I am LOVING the theory about River as Clara’s mum, and especially the ‘morning sickness’ foreshadowing.  I always thought River was her parent, and with the new Doctor…. um, yea…… loving it!!
