    Amazing episode… Totally mind blowing!

One thing with Clara tho, did I just totally miss that or did they not explain why the Tardis doesn’t like Clara?

Because of the way Clara was created I think,  tardis doesn’t like hey timey-whimey nature. She is like a wild-card (joker) in every event she enters.

Hey that was an amazing episode, really pleased with the writing in that 🙂    Clara flashbacks such as getting the first doctor to pick the correct tardis was simply inspired 🙂

Oh and I was in-the-ballpark with Clara on my theory,( she was key), and though not exactly a paradox it was a similar set-up that her future action had already determined that she had to continue to exist (exactly as I predicted!!), so she is very paradoxical in nature!! I couldn’t foresee that the Doctors complete timeline (as a portal)  would scatter Clara across all points of his history but this did give her the power to save him and change events as predicted and that she demonstrated a few times 🙂

    Moffet very well done!!!

So quick questions for next season.

How did the prisoner know where the doctor was buried?

Who is the dark doctor revealed as John Hurt?

How will the doctor and Clara escape the doctors timestream?

Will Clara still be his companion when/if they escape?

And is the 50th anniversary theme going to center on the doctor being trapped in his on past timestream? setting up many possibilities to interact with past doctors and companions.

Oh one more, I now predict the doctor will at some point have to fight (himself) in another incarnation  !!!  You heard it here first.

Aaaaand another inconsistency this episode raises: How could the Eye of Harmony – an inherently non renewable power source, actually inside and powering the Tardis – possibly square with the Tardis being completely drained of power in Rise of the Cybermen (and gradually recharging, sparked off by the Doctor) and indeed with it needing to be recharged by the Rift in Cardiff in BoomTown?

Neither of these is consistent with a super-massive black hole trapped in stasis providing power

For the sake of continuity Im going to suggest the eye isnt uncharged (ever) but that there is more than one type of energy the tardis relies on for power. Maybe the Eye mainly supports the dimension the tardis exists in  since I believe its in its own pocket dimension. It may be that some other energy is also needed at times to boost the Eye to achieve actual time travel which probaly requires immense energy.  We dont know the actual mix of energy so we cant assume the Eye can power everything the tardis uses. If that pocket dimension the Eye creates/supports is infinite in theory, I could see limitations in it being the only flow of energy  needed to also power travel.

Im sticking with my theory that Clara is impossible and she causes something impossible each episode and that will in time reveal her true nature.  My best guess is a living human paradox which has the effect of a (modern Mary Poppins) thus she is like magic in nature. Something the doctor is struggling to understand but I think hes starting to.

Therefore its not a paradox and although it’s not impossible Clara willed a remote into being, that’s not necessary for the plot to work.

Technically that means every iteration of the loop creates an extra remote on the console room floor. Since they’re not awash with them, they can only have gone around the loop once before @scaryb

The Key that sets up the paradox (The Phrase Clara says, Isnt there a Big Friendly Button) Once she suggests that then its locked that that will save them! Everything revolves around those words 🙂

Then events  must occur that cause the existence of the device all at the right time and for the right use, what are the odds that they are random at that point ? (Its sort of becomes self-fulling then)

The events in the episode after that can be said to have occured  based on her  ability (subtle yet immense power). In this case just the suggestion as to what will happen. A button will be found to exist.

And most compelling and important 🙂    Her hand and the device even reads–(Big Friendly Button)

Exactly what she uttered —-too much of a coincidence for this viewer.

Oh and let me take this a bit further—Clara (isnt there a big friendly button)

And sure enough, There existed a big friendly button—

Would it have been there if she hadnt willed it.     I think not.

Once again the idea for the ultimate solution was a gentle push from Clara: she was the one to first mention the need for a big red button. She planted the idea in the Doctor’s mind and the TARDIS and the Dr ran with it.

    Exactly (from first post)

Um, hmmm, Did she really accidently pick up the button cannister?  Or did she know to do it.  Watch her face closely as she goes to get it.

Really loved first 50 min!!! Resolution as a re-set of events, well thats common for the 11th.  So a tad of a been-there-done-that feeling.  But still the story was fresh and enjoyed it 🙂

Clara saves the day theme  continues.

Well, Since we are talking shows (and I feel the same as Lula, tv is so good who needs movies?) , I confess here and now. I havnt watched Madmen or Breaking Bad 🙁   YET        I forgot my whole family loves Merlin, also forgot Sherlock.  I do like The following pretty well and am a big Dexter fan :), granted we are getting into some violent stuff but its TV.  Elementary is decent also I think.  Primeval/Torchwood  2 others we watched 🙂 on the BBC side.

As to Lost, Well I just think they could have balanced the explanation better instead of a straight (purg.) ending.  The  show was so good at putting in some twisty time travel/freaky science stuff I didnt get the total walk away from that except they couldnt finish and explain alot.  Even some of the cast didnt get the ending 🙁    It was still a very good show and amazing cast that you dont see often.

Central Theme, Alot of cool posts. Well it keeps coming back to this for me. ( Clara can do impossible things :)

Someone ponted out it she is like Mary Poppins :) , very astute and accurate as well. A sci-fy version of her.

I think its setting up a resolution where (in the same fashion as Amy) , she has this magical moment to save the doctor and restore everything to normal. And like Amy it will take alot of backtracking and thought to figure out the how/why. While there will be some attempt to explain it in a timey/whimy fashion there may very well be some parts left to our imaginations to work-out. Sort-of like , well, she just can, because she is who she is, something like that. Regardless its a fun enough ride, good stories, though this year more then most I do think the plotlines are more similar to a few stories we have already seen. I think of Matt Smiths first three of seasons (very original stuff for the most part), this year aside from the Clara plot, not as much new stuff.

Wonted to reprint this here as to what Im thinking, Yes Im a dumbed Down American, lol

There is a general level of twattery on the Guardian blog now which is disappointing.

I too am very anti the anti-American comments which I find to be quite offensive and ignorant. Most of those posters prob never been to the US let alone lived there (I have btw, loved it) so are not commenting from a position of authority IMHO. They would be known here as “tossers” (“dickwads” perhaps in US terms).

(As  American will chime in.  Its interesting that many of us Americans have the exact opposite attitude towards England. We pretty much hold a high esteem and regard for the people overall and high quality tv productions. Im watching Doctor Who/Ripper Street/Copper/Orphan Black and like them all alot.  To the degree that a person is aware and appreciates good production values ,we really appreciate the style and writing of British shows and as far as I know, mostly those are not being changed , just because at some point they will reach our shores 🙂   Its because the style is different that makes us appreciate them.  Its hard to agree with the Americanized view with Doctor Who in mainly this respect.  Each episode causes an outburst of theories as to exactly what (did we just watch) and what does it all mean?  You dont see much of that in our TV.  Lost was our closest version and it ended badly.  If I have one suggested thing to say, it would be that I dont wont the ending to be (its done by magic 🙂 and a quick explanation about love ect… Hopefully we will end with some , at least,  good sounding  science in the mix.  You do have different levels of society here, like everywhere, but many do appreciate high quality writing 🙂

@badwolf99 I think that’s a very interesting idea that the universe has recreated her three times. If the universe recreated her, that would explain how she has such complete backstories and how she can have such an effect on events.

I’m really liking these new theories on Clara. They seem to make quite a bit of sense from what we’ve seen.

Wow Ive have alot of posts to catch up on.  Will be back on later 🙂   Yeah the re-creation theory seems to fit what we see happen, just a complete new background/life but her abililty  to fix/solve impossible problems with impossible solutions is at the heart of it. She is like an empath who (once emotional enough) has immense power to create solutions.  Im sure being Doctor Who,  human love is part of it but hopefully some science (paradox or otherwise) is in the mix.  The really great part in the posts is that we are seeing her importance/power now in the stories 🙂

Shazzbot,  Well we know her abilities are real.   When she dies (more like a displacement for her) ,  I think the universe recreates her complete with a background, and the Doctor has investigated her current background, doesnt mean she doesnt have other backgrounds in her other timelines.  Example when she was converted to a  Dalek, different timelime, different background, but upon death the universe had to account for her and thus a new complete history with parents and all.  Universe is vast and so are possible timelines for her. Her power to create (happy outcomes so far 🙂 rebirths along with her, thus she is like a empty- child each time.  Existing because she has to, but the universe does have some leeway in age/time ect.

I like the point (Have-you-fed-my fish) made.  We may not find out why?, like the universe, She might be  a mystery as to why. Just apart of the mystery of all things.   The paradox of cause/effect in human form. She causes events/timelines and so she must exist. If so she is the most remarkable companion the doctor has encountered in his history.

Cause and effect (also written as cause-effect or cause/effect or cause and consequence) refers to the philosophical concept of causality, in which an action or event will produce a certain response to the action in the form of another event.

Yep Bluesqueak, Her power is real and my original desire to open debate on  ;), why and how, thats going to be open to debate, a paradox, a storyteller, memories of the doctor manifesting in her,  some subset all connected?  Time will tell us.

You get it perfectly 🙂   Exactly, wonderfully perfect!!!! Thx,  Yeah Im thinking, thats another thing really worrying the Doctor, A Paradox that cant die or be fixed because the universe wont let it. Well its Doctor Who, they will come up with something  to normalize things or make it work  out 🙂  Probaly something thats turns her into a normal human, lol.

Yes interesting points to bring up, Clara is like an Empty-child, so maybe that ties in, I think she is the hero (so far) and its her ability to cause impossible things to happen that is scaring and amazing the doctor.  Im not sure how they will explain it all but the key is for us is to see what she can do.  It is like if she wrote a book of adventures with the doctor and then she just decides, ok I will end this chapter like-this and so it must happen.

Maybe, If so she is a very unique paradox. Im thinking of Capt. Jack being a fixed point in time, and so, he couldnt die. She may be many fixed points (a nexus as it were) with the added ability that she can determine the outcome of each timeline, which she has, often in a way that ignores normal limits of time and space, seemingly like magic. The doctor thinks, paradoxes usually fix themselves, but hes never seen a (blackhole) type like this one. Each time she appears she alters/rewrites time, understandably the tardis would be afraid of containing that :) And even her traveling in the tardis will create problems. Well this is guessing at this point but her abililties to create outcomes beyond normal reality is real and proven several times :)

Added as a reply on another thread of interest here also.

I will add that I think maybe, because she has this unique ability, that the ability itself brings her back into existence, its like a ongoing paradox, where as, because she changes and shapes time , its impossible for the universe to not to have her around to change and shape time because they depend on each other, but that is more of a guess.

ok I felt forced after all these theories to add this. Central theme, imo, is Clara herself and her rather subtle, yet amazing ablity, to write history as she wonts to. In each episode (except 1 I think) she has done something immensely powerfull that the doctor has witnessed. Tap into the Daleks programming and rewrite, check, cause a being of immense power to fill up on her future possibilities, check , sing a song to quell the bloodlust of the icewarriors ( and save the earth) check, fly the tardis into a pocket universe (when the doctor said it couldnt be done) check, cry tears that defeats the Great I, check. She did these things with no effort, immense power.

When the Doctor says, (Im the doctor and Im afraid) hes talking about Clara. He senses she is taking action yet again. The monster/sideshow was likely a test to see her power again. He fears her power to simply decide the outcome of time/events something he doesnt even have. How can a human do this? Of course she could be an immense crafted weapen. She could decide he shouldnt exist. She seems to be able to create any outcome she wonts. She also seems to slowly becoming aware (but not yet) of her abilities. The doctor is trying to guide her, make her aware of the importance and implications of these choices and decisions and at the same time he really wonts to find out where this power is coming from. He also fears her full awareness (lets say growing up). Thus the cat-and-mouse games, he has to be very carefull not to anger but at the same time get infomation and be carefull what he reveals to her. Remember this validation she seeks, and how eager to please, and he had to say (You did great). She is getting an education, quickly, and the Doctor is afraid of her growing abilities and what she might become. There are few, maybe none he has encountered that has that much power, Amy had a instance of it (because of the crack in time) Clara is a walking time-writing typewriter as it were and the Doctor doesnt know how to stop it, so in effect he is keeping her busy and trying to see what she does with it
