    Thanks @mudlark

two thoughts on baby jonas – quick google suggests derived from Jonah and meaning dove, so lots to ponder there.

but also jonas as a variant of John … Smith, the kidnap of the baby by the rani calling back to the TC story? Is the baby in fact the Dr?

I’ve always loved an alternative reality episode, lots of antecedents in Who of course, but also the Prisoner, the Truman show, original Star Trek tv series.

I have had a growing feeling thoughout this series that RTD2 is channeling the last twin peaks series. Lots of glitchy moments and odd turns. Central to that was agent cooper being trapped in an alternative reality of domestic and work bliss until he finally ‘wakes up’. If this holds for the final, expect moebius strip contortions and an ambiguous ending that leaves you wondering is this the real life, or is this just fantasy. Cut to credits.

So much to say, so hard to find time to say it.

I think @whohar not only predicted the episode but caused it to be – by virtue of the wish into reality power of the child in the ultimate meta fiction.

    So many links and questions

The cloaked rani with baby call back to ruby and mum

why was the opening on the horse so familiar

what was magic baby’s original name? Anyone catch that?

is there significance that the rani reveal last week was mid credits, as was the fan revival, so we we are in a meta fan world with Susan, rani, omega .. all to be dissolved by some kind of at of thinking or memory or love

flood – rain – rani – rain -river – pond

Also whatever is up it’s been going on since the start of RTD so I’m speculating on Wild Blue Yonder, salt, breach of the walls between our universe and the pocket universe of the Mind Robber.. causing bi-generation, explaining the time time loops in 73 Yards..

but then this is RTD2 so not hopeful.

As Mr Ring-a-Ding ascended, it looked to me like he left behind some tears? Which makes me think there is something definitely going on behind the tears… a flood of tears as it were. Is Mrs Flood stalking the Dr to collect his tears and unleash them on earth in a biblical flood?

@cookgroom now that is interesting;.. made me look up he mind robber and found this (cbr.com)

” When the Second Doctor and his friends encounter this unusual villain, he is attached to a computer known as the Master Brain, which produces the Land of Fiction from the Master Of The Land Of Fiction’s imagination. The Doctor Who baddie composes the scripts for everyone who resides in this fantasy world, pre-determining their actions through the course of the adventure.”

    very reminiscent of AL

did I dream it or in one episode mrs flood was narrating and turning the pages of a fairy tale book?

I feel like a bonkers theory is tantalisingly just out of reach, but something along the lines that the whole series is about role playing and artifice, from the multiple Susan Twist appearances, the divergent Rubies in 73 Yards, the fake friendships of Dot and Bubble and now the cos players… a nagging feeling that something is not right in this universe…excited now for the next two episodes

I was getting distinct Watcher vibes from the mysterious lady..

Great episode, love that much was left unexplained

Thoroughly enjoyable and lots of mysteries for future untangling.

@juniperfish agree about the jewellery, there was a lingering shot of the Doctor’s hand on the bannister which seemed deliberate to show off his rings…

Mrs Flood made me think of River / Pond as did the baby and parent mystery for Ruby but not sure RTD would parallel a Moff storyline so directly. Then again the crack in the wall (well ceiling)!

    Can’t wait for May

Occurs to me that if RTD2 is serious about all previous doctors having bigenerated, that means as well as 14 and 10.5, 10 will also now be knocking around somewhere, leading to the possibility of a triple Tennant episode.

And could the Master have also bigenerated? Could it be the Master as Missy picking up the gold tooth in which another version of the Master is contained.

We may need a flow chart!

Last night’s episode has certainly wormed itself into my brain which can only be a good thing.

It felt like two very different episodes spliced into one (kind of anti bigenerational). Loved the 1925 segments, gothic Victorian horror, very Tom Bakerish.

But the rooftop finale felt just too weird, with the Toymaker just sat around while the Doctor had his intra-doctor chat and then the unconvincing game of catch. Was it the Toymaker or RTD who dropped the ball?

The biregeneration thing was a nice twist as I had avoided spoilers, and I guess I like the message that it’s time to drop the angst ridden doctor and move to a more fun personality.

but there is a paradox I cannot reconcile. The Doctor is an alien not a human, and so the overlaying of human specific constructs of gender sexuality and race and the humanisation therapy prescribed for 14 sit awkwardly. Id like to think, in theory at least, that the doctor could regenerate as a multigendered trisexual lizard creature.

of course course in the context of a human made piece of drama the representational element is welcome and overdue, I just hope the doctor can reclaim their alienness.

On the literary theme, the Magic Toyshop by Angela Carter. Long time since I read but very spooky I recall

For a moment there I thought we were heading for a meta retcon of DW as a tv programme but wasn’t to be… loved the toymaker stuff, still in shock about the denouement..

And last and least some random disjointed observations… body dysmorphia <_> gender transition… 10 and 14 and 14 and his doppelgänger… doctordonna and  donnadoctor

i went to see this about the same time as the episode broadcast- as will be seen from the photos the arms are too long…

the performance was in part about how social media is transforming perceptions of the human body so definitely some weird synchronicity with wild blue yonder..

Explain the brilliance of this episode in five words or less:

    ”my arms are too long”.

A mere 8 years since my last post (a mere blink to a Timelord), and I’ve had to regenerate as I couldn’t access my former @bobbyfat account, but glad to be back.

The episode did exactly what it set out to do, which was to re-engage people like me who had drifted away from the show. Thoroughly enjoyed it!

Loved the reveal about Rose’s shed being a fragmented memory of the Tardis and the cuddly toys based on monsters past. I want one of her Oods for Chanukah.

Wonder if there is a link to Rose making toys to any other Toymakers?

And I wonder if there is something more to the mysterious person who buys her toys in Dubai (or was it Abu Dhabi?)

    The good times are back!
