In fact, I have not been able to even give it a second viewing yet, as a result of my emotional response.
It took me a while as well.
The response to this one was…hmmm….not visceral….fundamental.
Something deep about that story and the people in it, but also about storytelling. I think that may be why I am so a…[Read more]

@DrBen That remains my theory about the “three months” thing, that she’s dying. Bleak to bleaker, I know, but for some reason it feels right. And it definitely adds resonance to the line “Danny and I will be fine.”
It also makes her “You’re the last person who’s ever going to hear me say that” line to Danny that much clearer.

I am unsettled.
As am I. I had almost precisely the same response to all the things you mention. In fact, I have not been able to even give it a second viewing yet, as a result of my emotional response. It was, as you say, unrelentingly bleak. I can only hope that the story will be resolved in the Christmas special in a way that brings…[Read more]

@DrBen Not least of which because I thought the voice sounded like Russell T. Davies, and had a moment’s (bonkers) thought that they were going full meta, and RTD would burst through the doors of the TARDIS, bitching about what a sad mess Moffat has made of his show.
That would have been brilliant! Not because I don’t like Moffat’s work, bu…[Read more]

I can’t recall the number (he has loads) but it is “Go are dark as you dare, put your characters through hell and leave them bereft. But for god’s sake tell a joke at the end”.
(I was more bereft by the other death, since we knew less about him and I suspect the was a truly dark back-story)

Don’t get me wrong, it was an excellent episode. But for me, Moffat’s progression has not been from “Everybody lives” to “Osgood dies” but more like from “Everybody lives” to “NO HAPPY ENDINGS FOR ANYONE”.
That rather begs the question that the story has ended.
(oh and as well as underlining this, given the sombre tone I would say Santa’s…[Read more]

@drben – Of course, there are so many things I want from this episode, it’ll be impossible to get them all into a 44 minute show. Is this one going to be longer?
yes, it’s (at least) an hour…

Ooooh, lots of lovely juicy theories, thanks everyone.
@Lisa and others – Post-it notes
Well obviously Clara has stumbled into Steven Moffat’s workroom by mistake and is faced with massive spoilers of her own life, predestination paradoxes and a sneaky paranoia that she is being watched. And possibly controlled by an unseen presence! 😉

@DrBen You’ve actually hit on the bigger point, which is that, sexism aside, two pregnant companions in a row would just be lazy writing. I’m a woman and a writer, and this sentence makes me laugh! Because, shockingly, I have some sympathy for the notion that it matters not if Moffat is sexist, as long as he can write!
Obviously, it is mor…[Read more]

i just went back to investigate, and the hand on the picture frame is clara’s. as awkward as the angle is, it’s her right hand, and she’s pulling herself around the edge of the picture, as if she had been hiding just to the inside of it (to avoid the exploding dalek, i assume).
That’s unfortunate. I was hoping it was Missy, becau…[Read more]

@DrBen – they’ve had an unmarried couple with baby before in Closing Time. I don’t recall a fuss. So long as they imply that Clara and Danny are committed to each other, there isn’t a real problem.
The main problem Moffat has is that he can’t mention ‘sex’, ‘sleeping together’ or even ‘conception’. ‘Wedding night’ is, however, allowable. :-D…[Read more]

@DrBen Something else just occurred to me. As DW is still ostensibly a family show, there’s no way that Moff could get away with suggesting that Danny and Clara engaged in pre-marital sex.
Why not?

I’m also agin it. There was such a big thing made about the effect of time travel on unborn children. You could argue that it was just conception that was a problem (without using the word ‘conception’, of course). Three months? Three months since we met, three months since we slept together, three months on the TARDIS, three months (as…[Read more]

This one is definitely my fave:
“If the Doctor regenerated into a woman, would he change his name to The Nurse?
No. Because a woman doctor is called ‘a doctor’.”
I like the time loop theories. Just as I like the idea that Clara is already dead. We know something is going on “up-time-stream” already, given that the Doct…[Read more]

@DrBen What is the deal with the sister reappearing in the hydrangeas?
For some reason, the sister reappearing in the hydrangeas as a result of magical action by golden particles in the air reminded me of the nanogene cloud from The Doctor Dances. Perhaps the magical tree spirits are nanogenes “in the wild”, so to speak.

@Lisa – I actually had the same thought!
Basically, if The Master is on Gallifrey, he’ll know that the Doctor was given extra generations.
However, if he plots with the Daleks to escape the Time Lock (and if he managed to escape with Davros but tricked Davros into a Cyberman body… and my god, if they bring back Julian Bleach to play him, that…[Read more] -

Actually, there was a bug in the sheet caused by my trying to cut and paste new categories from my Excel master sheet. The formulas for the Sontaran, Master and Gallifrey sections hadn’t copied properly, so they were just showing the data without doing any calculations.
It is fixed now!

@CathAnnabel I agree with your thoughts on the phone call. I don’t see this as a future Clara, but pretty much what we are shown: Clara trying to open up with Danny (and possibly including some truth that we aren’t privy to, either!)
@Brewski Yes, I was thinking of the security lock on my Toyota Matrix. You can’t start the car without the…[Read more]
