Ta for that @scaryb. Managed to miss that gallery. I took delivery just yesterday of my Dave McKean variant cover of Sandman Overture #1 signed by Dave McKean himself. To say I’m pleased at getting my hands on this entirely fails to do justice to the smug grin plastered on my features. I’m more pleased than the Doctor after being told that his fez is looking particularly cool today.

Do we think that perhaps the 50th anniversary special may end up undoing the events of the Time War to save the soul of the Doctor who cannot name himself Doctor? A full return of the Timelords and the Dalek Empire? Just throwing that one out there. Goodnight, all. Happy musings.
18 May 2013 at 23:14 #9662@juniperfish Someone on the Guardian blog pointed out that if Clara was present on Gallifrey to point the Doctor towards the ‘right’ TARDIS to steal, then it would suggest there’s a Timelord version of Clara. Which would be interesting, as she’d presumably have the ability to reincarnate. I’m not so sure about the idea of Clara being a creation of the TARDIS and River. If so, why would the TARDIS be so apparently antagonistic towards her? Why would it stop the Doctor landing at Trenzalore if it already knew it had created Clara to save him and, indeed, to point him towards stealing it in the first place? I think the mystery of Clara is what we’ve seen tonight. I think her various versions in history know what to do to point the Doctor in the right direction based on her exposure to his timestream. I’m not sure there’s anything more to it. I think we’ve now moved on to the mystery of the Doctor himself. Which is how it should be for the 50th anniversary.

18 May 2013 at 22:41 #9650Just finished watching again. The GI talks of ‘the slaughterer of the ten billion’. I assume that this is the John Hurt incarnation, and I’d be surprised if the Timelords had let one of their own responsible for this level of genocide simply adopt a new name and roam around time and space. I’m therefore swinging away from the Zero Doctor theory and back toward him being the Time War or the pre-Valeyard incartion. We don’t know anything, do we? My brain hurts.

The Great Time War may pale into insignificance if we decide to go head to head on the great battle grounds of the Pennines in a bid for world domination. Perhaps some sort of treaty is in order 😉

18 May 2013 at 21:13 #9612@bluesqueakpip @miapatrick Hmm, coming round to the idea of John Hurt being the Zero incarnation, the one whose actions first caused him to flee Gallifrey and assume the name of Doctor. That would certainly be an easier concept for non Who obssessives (I know! Apprently there are some, though) in the casual viewing audience to get their heads around for the 50th anniversary special than needing a detailed knowledge of the events of Trial of a Timelord. Which blows my 12th incarnation, pre -Valeyard theory out of the water. Right, I’m going to have to go and watch it again. Right now.

I’m guessing John Hurt might be the Time War incarnation since the Doctor’s reaction seems to be about crimes past. Which has me tremendously excited. What was so terrible about his acts during that conflict (above and beyond what we already know?) that mean he is not even allowed to be considered The Doctor? Mind you, the Eleventh seemed to know all about Trenzalore. And perhaps even more than he was letting on about the Battle of Trenzalore. So maybe it is a future incarnation after all (there’s no reason a time traveller like the Doctor wouldn’t have knowledge of his own future). Perhaps the one prior to the Valeyard. A Dark Doctor whose existence was then distilled into that of the Valeyard (who I seem to recall is meant to exist around or just after the twelth incarnation).

@phaseshift I took your suggestion of Saturday night on board and have written a few words on Sandman for Who bloggers. I can post them here, somewhere else, or email them to you to see what you think.
Incidentally, did you see the news last year that Gaiman’s writing a prequel to Preludes and Nocturnes?
11 May 2013 at 21:49 #8609@miapatrick I did wonder, when the Emperor made his speech about feeling sorry for the person that pressed the button that condemned a galaxy to death to defeat the Cybermen, whether he wasn’t sure who’d actually pressed that button and whether it was, in fact, the Doctor. The Doctor’s actions may be about to catch up with him.

11 May 2013 at 20:54 #8581@phaseshift Good spot on the echo of Gaiman’s August story. Didn’t occur to me while viewing the episode, but spot on. And of course, the entire Sandman epic revolves around the idea of the all powerful entity who, while appearing to be assured in his position, secretly questions his own existence and recognises change is no bad thing. Makes you wonder whether Gaiman would be the perfect person to take over from Moffat when he calls it a day. Honestly, to any bloggers who haven’t read it, I couldn’t recommend Sandman highly enough.
On that note, I thought the Emporer’s speech about feeling more sorry for the person who pressed the button and destroyed a galaxy to end a war was a reference to what we’re about to find out about the Doctor on the fields of Trenzalor as much as to the emporer’s own past.
Absolutely loved, loved, loved the brief Tomb of the Cybermen sequence. I actually clapped at that. Yes, I know. I’m not proud.
So, the big question. The Doctor’s mental block regarding Clara. Self imposed? Or something more interesting/sinister? She’s perfect for him. Is this why the TARDIS dislikes her? Perhaps the TARDIS already knows who she is.
Oh, and Cybermen so unrelenting that people have to blow up planets or even entire galaxies to stop them the moment one appears? Yeah, that’s nasty enough for me. Well done, Neil.

I genuinely hadn’t thought of this. I’m so obsessed by his role in the Time War that it hadn’t occured to me that maybe his reticence to have his name revealed relates to something rather further in Gallifreyan past.
27 April 2013 at 21:15 #6924@zaphod You’re quite correct. Doctor Who and the Krikkitmen was a script proposed by Douglas Adams but rejected in the late Seventies. In that version, the Krikkitmen had been stuck in a temporal prison by the Timelords.

I still don’t think we’re actually going to hear it. I think it’s what its revealing will say about his role in the Time War. So, can things learned be truly unlearned? Clara is the Impossible Girl who keeps reappearing in time. Will resetting time back one day really undo what she’s learned? At the end, she says ‘I’m exhausted’. The Doctor replies something like ‘well we have just lived through two days in one’. This implies that echoes of their time in the TARDIS’ innards remains. Why would you be physically exhausted if you haven’t actually been through that extra time?
So we now have two people , Clara and River, who, at some point in possible timelines, know the Doctor’s true name and who will be there for the season closer. So who will reveal it? Will they even reveal it, or is The Name of the Doctor a big tease? Why, exactly, is it such an important secret (this, more than any other, is the question that has me thinking about this far more than is healthly). The ‘Silence will fall’ line about the revealing of the Doctor’s name makes me think that perhaps they had a role in the Time War. Something instigated by the Doctor, and this is why the revealing of the Doctor’s name is so bound up with their fate.

Could I ask a really stupid question? How do you do the @username with the embedded link to their profile business? I’m afraid I’ve been rather mollycoddled by the Guardian comments system. I’m going to try it in the next line but suspect there’s a really easy way I’m just not getting.
Anyway, @jimthefish, on the subject of Masterchef I’ve thought for a while that Michelle Roux Jr looks like the very epitome of a Who villain. He looks like he should be dressed head to toe in black, having just sold his people into slavery in a misguided deal with the Daleks.

The idea that the Doctor ganger is still loose is an interesting one. Mainly because of the promise of the end of season closer. The answer to ‘The Doctor’s Name’ could be ‘not the real one’.

Anway, as I hinted on the Guardian blog, thought the most interesting part of that episode was Clara’s reaction to the Doctor’s rather dispassionate take on watching all of human history from start to finish. When she asked him ‘So is that what we are to you? Ghosts?’, he didn’t reply about that question. He only said that she was the most interesting mystery worth solving. This Doctor is more and more alien, and in some ways seems more and more disassociated from us. How does he really view us humans? In times past, the Doctor has had a close afinity with the people of Earth. Perhaps it’s just me, but this Doctor really does seem to view us as a curiosity. I’m not suggesting this is a bad thing. I’m rather enjoying it.
