    @jphamlore

    The Doctor has encountered plenty of phenomena that looked like they might be ghosts but from what I recall never blurted out they might be ghosts. What does that actually mean?

    I suspect that this is a deliberate piece of misdirection on the part of the Doctor.  The things have the stock characteristics of ghosts as many people c…[Read more]

    @jphamlore, Aaahhh! Thank you. I understand.

    I’ve not  been here long myself but the people who frequent this forum all seem to be wonderful and their theories are great!

  • JimmytheTulip replied to the topic Under The Lake

    @jphamlore, forgive my ignorance but what exactly is meant by “breaking the fourth wall”? This is the second time I’ve seen that term today…

  • lisa replied to the topic Under The Lake

    @jphamlore Your description of a black hole also reminds me of the episode ’42’
    from the Ten Doc era. As does the writing and its got a similar crew aspect too.
    In that episode the Doctor fought an ultimate evil. Also, the writing in that
    episode allowed the crew to be hacked. hm!

  • FiveFaces replied to the topic Under The Lake

    @mudlark @jphamlore @craig Er yes, that’s rather a lot of examples of the Doctor going back to check on things happening before the current story started. Point taken! I’m rather annoyed at myself for not thinking of City of Death, since that is one of my faves.

    @purofilion Cheers! Your thoughts and kind words are much appreciated. The more I…[Read more]

  • Craig replied to the topic Under The Lake

    @jphamlore @fivefaces Also, more recently, the Matt Smith Doctor did a bit of time travelling in ‘Hide’ to find out what was going on. And in that story it was because it was thought there was a ghost.

    @JPhamlore

    What if none of this was an accident.

    Oh, it’s not an accident. Dounreay, Caithness, was the site of both the UK Atomic Energy Authority’s and the Ministry of Defence’s atomic research stations. The AEA’s plants have been commissioned, and they are indeed seriously considering decommissioning the Naval testing plants as well. They…[Read more]

    @jphamlore  Think of an older Lyell who may have been driven to despair and desperation, due to the death of his longtime companion, to finally explore past the safe limits investigating the artifact.

    Hmm.  Then maybe the Doctor might be back here later, after Clara has — exited, however that comes about?  Just a possible similarity . . .…[Read more]

  • lisa replied to the topic Under The Lake

    @jphamlore I wiki’d Lyell and there was a picture of him that very much
    resembles the ghost with the whiskers. He was a famous geologist. I
    wonder if he was also a Freemason? Usually Scottish intellectuals were.
    I think the philosophers stone is part of the masons mythology as well as
    the Merlin story too.

    the Doctor’s strange comments about ghosts

    They’re not strange: he’s pretty well forced to that explanation. They’re translucent images of dead people which can walk through walls and they only come out at night – what else can you call them? The only question is whether they’re a ‘copy’ like Missy’s digital downloads or the alien h…[Read more]

    @Papermoon

    Yes, I like your thoughts on the Doctor broadcasting re Clara as a warning to Missy to keep her safe as much as to the Daleks. As for the Doctor without hope… “He’ll burn us all”, I just got my copy of the Day of the Doctor and watched if for the first time since the anniversary. Capaldi Doctor’s face appears in there, from the…[Read more]

  • ichabod replied to the topic The Witch’s Familiar

    @jphamlore  . . . Clara is . . .  a plot by Missy to break the Doctor once and for all of his desire to travel with a human companion as opposed to Missy. Missy wants Clara to be the absolute limit in the good sense of what an ordinary human companion can be. Peak Clara and Doctor. And then of its own weight, perhaps not even with Missy’s dire…[Read more]

    @jphamlore How’s this:

    <quote>The initial studio session for City Of Death was held in BBC Television Centre Studio 3 on May 21st and 22nd. The first day was devoted to scenes in the café and in the modern art museum. Since late April, Adams had been in touch with famed comedian John Cleese about appearing as one of the art critics. Cleese and…[Read more]

    I wonder maybe if Mr. Sarff just had some innovative notions in regards
    to his personal life choices?

    Why not?  I guess it would have depended on how they voted – they are a democracy, after all.  I have a feeling, though, that they might have been a wee bit offended by your implied assumption in referring to them as ‘Mr’    🙂

    @jphamlore Hmmm. The ‘Moment’ actually being the Silver Nemesis wearing a hat, and the ‘Hand of Omega’ waiting in the wings to appear in the new series in a different hat is a pretty interesting idea.

    For the record:

    The Hand of Omega is the florid Time Lord name for a stellar manipulating device, about the size and shape of a coffin, which…[Read more]

    Still on the Clara issue, something else which I have noted is that she is dressed very somberly, in muted tones with a shapeless jumper over her dress and thick heals. Not more stilettos. This is essentially a Clara who is still going through the mourning process. She has been through quite a tough emotional journey and has understandably been…[Read more]

    <span class=”useratname”>@jphamlore</span>  Yes, any site that uses the Rider Waite deck is going to be the most classical.   My training was from my mother who believed the Tarot told an ancient story tied to King Arthur, The Fisher King and most of all Christ.  She did not use them as divination, but as scholarly study and a way to use arc…[Read more]

    I think Missy’s characterisation has been consistent since the closing scenes of The Last of the Time Lords; nobody kills the Doctor except Missy! 😉

    I agree that part of it is simply wanting her friend back, but I wonder whether Moffat’s also built on the Master’s discovery that it was Rassillon and the Council of Time Lords who…[Read more]
