Happy ‘one year until the 10th anniversary of The Doctor’s return’ birthday 🙂
To celebrate nine years since Doc 9 made his debut, the BBC have release some commemorative wallpapers.
28 March 2014 at 10:50 #26612Bugger – if I’d been around earlier in the week, I could have pointed out that the episode of Cobwebs was repeated on Monday night (midnight).
I’m sure you know it’s available on i-player, but if anyone wants to hear the first episode of the Fifth Doctor BF story Cobwebs, it’s on i-player for a couple more days.
BTW – Adric returns?! I think I’ll put them firmly on the miss-list. I don’t want anything to compromise my fond memories of the end of Earthshock.

29 March 2014 at 13:00 #26626http://www.doctorwhonews.net/2014/03/derek-martinus-1931-2014.html
Derek Martinus has died at the age of 82.
http://www.kasterborous.com/2014/03/doctor-experience-wants-marketing-manager/
30 March 2014 at 12:17 #26660As well as the sad news of Derek Martinus, Kate O’Mara’s agent has now announced her death at the age of 74.
30 March 2014 at 13:06 #26661That is really sad to hear about Kate O’Mara. I know that it is convential wisdom to dismiss both the Rani and Colin Baker’s Doctor, but it is only when the actors who play characters are gone that you realise how much you miss those characters after all. (So hang in there, Colin.) And speaking for myself, Kate O’Mara had a definite sort of (ahem) appeal. And her Rani was just so…deliciously and amorally evil.
I mentioned upstream on the Speculations/Whishlist thread that I hoped S8 might give us a renegade Time Lord as a point of comparison with the Doctor. Well, why not the Rani? I am sure that someone like Lara Pulver would make a great Rani.
30 March 2014 at 15:28 #26662Such sad news about Kate O’Mara. She wasn’t well served with stories but she still made The Rani so fantastically, wickedly watchable. It’s become something of a joke the way every time there’s a female villain brought into Doctor Who the cry goes up that “maybe she’s The Rani!” but Kate’s would be a tough act for anyone to follow.
30 March 2014 at 18:33 #2666431 March 2014 at 15:27 #26669That’s really too bad. I have fond memories of “The Mark of the Rani”. She was such a great counterpoint to the over-the-top Master. He rubbed his hands together and cackled, and she went coolly about her nefarious business; as far as she was concerned, the Master and the Doctor were opposite sides of the same irritating coin. Kate O’Mara played her to perfection.
1 April 2014 at 06:58 #26680Anonymous @Christopher Eccleston to return as The Doctor in the Christmas 2014 episode 😯
http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/doctorwho/articles/christopher-ecclestone-return-to-doctor-who-confirmed
1 April 2014 at 11:33 #26681This is an April Fool’s Day story, surely? (the misspelling of Eccleston in the link is a bit of a giveaway)
1 April 2014 at 12:09 #26682It’s a shout out to the original news story that Christopher Eccleston wouldn’t be returning for Series 2. It broke on April Fool’s Day 2005 – so everyone thought it was a hoax, at first.
🙂

OK, I confess. I was me playing a little April Fool’s joke 😀
I made a discovery a few days ago whereby if you type “http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/doctorwho/articles/” followed by any text, it takes you to a blank page. Try it!
I’d quite forgotten that it was announced on 1st April that Eccles wouldn’t be returning.

Jon Pertwee at the Radiolympia (Radio Olympia) exhibition in 1947.
29 April 2014 at 15:02 #27249DWM #473 is on sale Thursday 1 May 2014, priced £4.99.
29 April 2014 at 16:28 #27254Brilliant Pathe clip of Jon Pertwee at the Radiolympia exhibition. (How do you find all these things?)
One is tempted to wonder whether it had any influence 23 years later when they put him in Bessie in a cloak.
30 April 2014 at 04:36 #27267@blenkinsopthebrave Yes the same thought went through my mind too. Maybe J.P. had some influence in both cases over the costume and the car. He did always like to be behind a wheel and I suspect he was also rather fond of cloaks. (Well who wouldn’t be?)
Cheers

1 May 2014 at 15:43 #272821 May 2014 at 17:27 #27285Anonymous @@blenkinsopthebrave and @janetteb — isn’t the common lore that Pertwee’s costume was largely his own creation and that he attended his interview in cap and frilly shirt that used to belong to his grandfather or summat like that?
@wolfweed — the history of SF sounds interesting. Big question is can I get over my Dominic Sandbrook aversion to sit down and watch it.
Too bad about Craig Ferguson too. Though as the article says maybe he’s being lined up as the new Master. That would be awesome. Particularly if he did it in full Bing Hitler mode…
2 May 2014 at 02:49 #27295@jimthefish I probably should have known that. (hangs head in shame at being found wanting in “Who lore”) 🙂
Cheers
