Re: remedial school idea

Is there any scope in hooking our remedial watching to the episodes which the BFI were/are showing?  I realise they’ve probably done most of them, but as the Q&A’s with the cast/production crew are available online it might add another dimension.

Of course those of you who remember BG will have watched them, but some of us (ie me) may not have.

@bluesqueakpip I expected that. There’s a lot to be gained just from Moffat’s now familiar tropes of repetition (from “I want my Mummy” to “I don’t know where I am”) and “Everybody lives” and will look forward to it.

So do we do a BG Who and an AG Who each Saturday? Could be interesting… and not too taxing.

OOOh, am all excited again. And yes of course there’s still lots of extreme detail we’ll have missed 😈 eg Moff says he always leaves threads dangling here and there so he’s got options to pick up in case eg a) Matt leaves or b) Matt doesn’t leave. So we can at least keep an eye out for potential dangling bits aka plot holes if you’re a G-troll 😉

And a big yes from me to Sat night viewings – that sounds just right (tho I may have to get an absence note from my mum for most of Aug. But I’m sure there will be plenty of others around to comment!)

Also like @chickenelly‘s idea re linking in with the BFI screenings of BG Who, although any special requests/suggestions equally good (eg if @htpbdet has any starter suggestions).

And further to the piracy  comments – I’m all for respecting copyright but @craig is absolutely correct when he says the biggest illegal downloaders have been proven in several studies (never widely publicised) to be also the ones who spend most on buying CDs, DVDs etc and spreading the word amongst friends. They should be treated like gold-dust by record companies but funnily enough they don’t recognise it – there again those cos have their very large percentages to protect. (oooh! sore point 🙂 )

I like the idea of doing a selection of  both BG and AG series. Focussing on Moffat’s stories makes sense and in general they stand out as amongst the best of AG. Talons would be a good story to cover from the first series but I’d be happy with whichever story is picked, (Just as long as it isn’t a C.B. one.) We recently started watching the later 3rd Doctor stories and were up to “Robot” when our eldest distracted us with B.5. We are almost done with that and about to return to the Doctor.

In Oz we used to have an episode a night wedged between The Goodies and the 7.00 pm news. Each new series was quickly followed by months of repeats. In 2005 ABC repeated every extant complete story of Doctor Who. It took about two years. (Naturally a lot of recording was done.) Now new episodes are screened on Sundays, which is all irrelevant to the discussion.

I just noticed the next one he intends to feature is Talons of Weng Chiang, so it kind of works if we went with that as the first BG episode (although at an ep a week, his review will be up well before we finish!).

I also think it would be good because there are a couple of references people may pick up on if we are watching Empty Child/Doctor Dances. As for other BG episodes, it would be good to pick ones that may have relevence to Moffat era/anniversaries. Certainly as we approach the 50th it would be good to jontly watch Unearthly Child if possible.

Just got my A150 module result back today- 74% for the exam- context: when I took the exam, I made a major boo-boo on the first question, let’s just say I originally wrote an answer on a text taken from a 20th century poet’s reworking of an ancient Greek text as though it was in fact a translation of the (definitive written version of) the ancient Greek text and only realised my mistake a quarter of an hour before the end of the exam. Fortunately I was using a computer, and now I have the result, I’m glad I didn’t request extra time, because it was sloppy of me to make that mistake, and I think I can feel pleased with myself for the result, without feeling that I had too many allowances made.

(86% on assignments as well. So: happy.)

oh re: BG doctor- I have recently felt a real hankering to watch some pre-reboot who, and would personally really welcome some guidance as to which are the best to watch, as well as discussions on it. I can’t believe the BBC aren’t saturating late night BBC 3/4 + iplayer with it, frankly, I would have done that since the reboot, personally, so I would also appreciate advice as to the (ahem) cheapest way of finding these episodes.

As for unofficial postings, I won’t go there – not just because of copyright naughtiness, but that would make them more likely to be pulled. There are plenty of illicit postings on youtube. Start by typing story titles. Others are more cleverly hidden.

I’ve been through about 5 replies to your post in my head, and while all of them are true, none of them really capture the answer.

(neither does this one, but here goes)

I do tell nervous jokes.  I don’t mean to offend, but jokes are always on a razor edge.

Also one of the 2 posts, it actually goes with a comment, and I can’t remember the source, I think it was from a documentary about Not the Nine O’Clock News, about the way humour gobbled up ideas in a way that other genres don’t.

I do more than nervous jokes, but not always at short notice.

Yeah, I get that on a Whovian website you do get people that take the piss.

@scaryb– I’m 34! dropped out of university after one year, way back. But since I’ve spent the last few years not working because I’m a carer, and since the OU doesn’t involve living with a bunch of students (was never keen) decided to get a degree now. At some point I will be able to/have to work.

@bluesqueakpip– thank you. actually did an ok patch up job on that question, but lost marks on the other two because of time issues. I defiantly think not bad for my first exam for a decade and a half.

Hi. I’m not too sure about what the friendship funxtion actually does in all honesty, but you don’t need to be friends to send a PM (you contacted me once yourself ages ago on another issue, if you remember).

Quick question if you don’t mind. On one of your articles earlier in the year I seem to remember you mentioning rumours that the BBC had unearthed some old episodes. I hadn’t heard those at the time, but rumours seem to be all over the place at the moment.

I just wondered if this was what you were talking about? I absolutely love the idea this has happened and therefore don’t believe it for a second. Some of the serials mentioned (Evil of the Daleks being one), weren’t even sold in Africa to my knowledge.

As one who feels like he has been recovered from the lost forever pile, I think I can safely say that you should maybe start believing…

Not sure that Evil of the Daleks will be screened – but my spies tell me – and I really thought I had mentioned this before but maybe I didn’t? – that pretty much everything missing has been found, although not all of that which has been found is, so far, safely at the BBC.

Even though Africa and Asia did not buy a lot of Doctor Who it appears that a lot of episodes were hawked around there for viewings by salesfolk. Or, at least, so I am told.

I gather, though, that there was an idea that the opening and closing story of each Doctor would be played in the lead up to the 50th Anniversary Special….which would be quite exciting…

As I understand it, only Dalek Masterplan, Savages, Smugglers, Ice Warriors and Wheel in Space remain incomplete…

But no doubt @danmartinuk will know more…

I think maintaining my sense of disbelief is more healthy considering how many of these rumours I’ve read over the years. It’s far better to be pleasantly surprised by being proved wrong. 😉

Regarding the missing ep rumours, I have to say I think I’ll still feel a bit ‘meh’ even if they turn out to be true. I’ll be very glad if  the show finally has a fully comprehensive back catalogue (although I suspect it will delight BBC Worldwide more than anyone else). It’s not like they’ll be likely to putting too many of them on air, I suspect.

And I just don’t think that it would exonerate the Beeb in the slightest for their annoyingly and pretty inexcusably underachieving anniversary year. As Moffatt himself said, it should be about the show’s future rather than its past.
