I certainly am sending best thoughts and wishes. @htpbdet‘s contributions here are much missed. I hope he is recovering well.

20 September 2013 at 09:49 #1745120 September 2013 at 16:21 #17458On the trailer front, it’s actually unusual for the BBC to go outside their guidelines of promoting a show outside of a month of televising it, except for an “event” (which I think this would count as).
I can’t help thinking that the replacement for Merlin – Atlantis is shown on Sat 28 Sep at 20:25. A canny controller may wish to promote the show with a well publicised showing of a trailer people are baying for beforehand?
Wait and see I guess.
20 September 2013 at 16:30 #17459It was Fifty Years Ago Today…
… that the cast met, put on their costumes, and did Doctor Who’s First Official Photo Shoot. I’m sure they didn’t imagine that – fifty years later – actors male and female would still be dutifully putting on their costumes for the latest Doctor Who photo shoot. Or that still other actors would be playing them…
According to the BBC’s Twitter feed, the first scene filmed was fifty years ago yesterday. It was of the TARDIS exterior.
20 September 2013 at 17:51 #17461Re non-appearance of trailers – they’re not shy about promoting everything else (other than actual programmes!) about the show! <note to self: stay caaaalm, breeeathe slowly>
Those first session photos are great Bluesqueakpip, Hartnell looks right in character, even so early on.

21 September 2013 at 05:45 #17472It might not be the BBC that is withholding the trailor but Steven Moffat. It would appear that the trailer contains spoilers or at least gives some infomation or clues about the 50th that he wishes to withhold from the general viewing public for as long as possible, to be finally shown maybe in conjunction with something else. If this is the case however I don’t really know why a second trailer can’t be made that reveals nothing. It wouldn’t be hard.
Cheers

21 September 2013 at 09:46 #17474@janetteb – this may be stupid of me, but I’d always thought that the BBC made the BBC trailers, not the production team. In which case, part of the problem may be that the number of recent leaks means Moffat is extremely unwilling to let them see the 50th Anniversary episode too early, for fear of spoilers.
21 September 2013 at 10:38 #17475Anonymous @
The BBC do indeed make the trailers but, from what I’ve been led to believe, a production team can hold back any footage that they don’t want included in any trailers.
Now I may be getting a little confused here but I thought a trailer for the 50th was shown at ComicCon in July. It must have been relatively spoiler free else t’interweb would have gone into meltdown.
There was an article (in the Radio Times I think) detailing exactly what was shown in the trailer and from what I remember, there was nothing in it that hasn’t already been announced on the Beeb’s Dr Who site (guest stars, villains etc.).
I can’t see any (legitimate) reason for them not to broadcast it, to be honest.

@wolfweed — nice to actually see some new Who. Even if it was just a bit daft. But was that Stuart Fell as one of the guards? If it was that was a nice touch…

26 September 2013 at 09:49 #17580@wolfweed – great finds as ever, thanks for posting. Laughed at the DVD extra with River, loved the dalek getting a tow (imagine coming across that unexpectedly in real life – good job the roads are quiet, haha). And I’m in Who-heaven with the Tardis set-drawings, they’re just wonderful 😆
@xad4 Thanks for the RT listings – looking forward to watching the old episodes. Shame they picked Battlefield for McCoy, but yay! for Vengeance on Varos (the return of Sil woohoo!). And Earthshock… well at least it’s controversial 🙂
26 September 2013 at 10:53 #17583For those who didn’t manage to get tickets to the Doctor Who Celebration – they now have a few tickets available. Because of the insane demand last time, they’ll be holding a ballot for them.
The ballot is now open, and will be open until 10am 30th Sept.

There are petitions to turn the Empire State Building blue and build a replica TARDIS on the lawn of the White House to celebrate the 50th.
Maybe we should start a petition to have hordes of Daleks and Cybermen march through London or get a spaceship to hit Big Ben and then crash into the Thames 🙂
26 September 2013 at 19:40 #17588THANKS @wolfweed ! I wish Moffat could have done something more meaningful though. Love to see them both nevertheless

DVD Minisode Inforarium
27 September 2013 at 05:59 #17592Loved the mini clips. Much thanks @wolfweed. You have won back the crown.. It is always nice to get little snippets like these. They broaden the frame of the story and give the character a life outside the screen. And right now even “the little crumbs of Moffat’s table” are welcome.
I thought Carol Ann Ford sounded quite bitter in that mini interview. It seems as though she blames Dr Who for her career disapointments.
Cheers

27 September 2013 at 17:28 #1760150 years ago today, Doctor Who’s principal cast, including William Hartnell, began filming their very first scenes for the pilot episode.

27 September 2013 at 18:33 #17609Anonymous @
@wolfweed — thanks for the minisodes. Definitely gasping at any new Who like a, er, fish in a desert at the moment.
But is it just me but are they just a bit … meh … compared to the ones in Series 5 and Pond Life? Plus the TARDIS one is just more or less a complete copy of one of the Series 5 ones. Grumble. Grumble. (Does my Arse look big in this?)
27 September 2013 at 18:52 #17610@jimthefish – there’s a sneaky little question hidden in the TARDIS one.
Does Clara speak TARDIS?
27 September 2013 at 18:55 #17611Anonymous @
@bluesqueakpip — ooo, that’s a good point. As far as I can remember, the only other companion capable of holding a dialogue with the TARDIS was Leela…
27 September 2013 at 22:46 #17612@jimthefish I agree on the meh bit. Also feels off for the Doctor to make his infomation memory-proof. To use something from the silence is just odd.
@Clara-issue I think she should at least get along now. Mabe the two of them even teaming up? Although River must have been able to talk to her. In LKH she said “she [the TARDIS] showed me how [to fly her]. She taught me!”
27 September 2013 at 22:52 #17613re Does Clara speak TARDIS – good point. She also spoke TARDIS in Hide.
I’m loving all the Hartnell stuff that’s coming out now – thanks for keeping us up to date with the anniversaries. Poor WH – he had no idea just what he was kick-starting. Just another acting job, OK it’s a kids show, but it would fill 40+ weeks/year, and then the fear of being typecast 😉 It’ll be interesting to see how Matt does once he leaves, but Tennant seems to be managing to keep a credible acting career going while still being happy to be recognised as the Dr. (Smiled at the clip of Moffat accepting the TV Award from Davison, with DT (and comment about PM criticising Ten’s TARDIS parking))
Re the production schedules of the first few series – you have to be impressed with what they turned out then. A new planet, monsters, costumes, story every few weeks and strict studio time limits. Even soaps have it easy compared to that.

Actually, Carole Ann Ford in her Guardian interview (I linked to it over in the Companions thread) says that William Hartnell told her back in the day that this show would run forever. That struck an odd note with me – if anyone might have had that idea, surely it would be Troughton, once the whole regeneration thing had been established?
28 September 2013 at 10:19 #17618@Shazzbot – it might be that Hartnell was thinking along the lines of someone else playing The Doctor, without actually thinking ‘regeneration’. Robin Hood’s been played by an awful lot of different actors.
28 September 2013 at 11:09 #17619Anonymous @
Robin Hood’s been played by an awful lot of different actors.
Sure, so has Sherlock Holmes, etc. But how often was the actor who played Robin Hood changed within the same movie or TV series? It’s not an analogy worthy of you.
I’ll have to watch CAF’s interview again, but I got the distinct impression she was talking about Hartnell while he was still playing the Doctor. Why would Hartnell proclaim that the series would go on and on forever? He might have been thinking about leaving, and aware that the BBC would not axe the show but would hire another actor for the role. But he seems quite alone at the time for believing the show ‘had legs’, if CAF is quoting him correctly.
CAF does admit she’s a bit weary of providing the same answers to the same questions for such a long, long time, so perhaps she’s just getting a little creative with her patter? 🙂
28 September 2013 at 12:14 #17620@Shazzbot – she could be misremembering something Bill Hartnell said later as something he said at the time, yes. But as for the analogy not being worthy of me – firstly, there’s Robin of Sherwood. Yes, they made ‘Robin Hood’ into a title, but he was played by two entirely different actors within the same series.
Secondly, there’s Quatermass in the 1950’s. Bernard Quatermass was first played by Reginald Tate – who died. Then, in the second Quatermass serial, he was played by John Robinson after Tate’s early death. They didn’t like Robinson’s performance (to be fair, neither did Robinson) and he was unavailable during filming dates anyway – so Andre Morrell then took over for Quatermass and the Pit.
Same character, three actors. I’m pretty sure Billy Hartnell would know Quatermass; Doctor Who drew from Quatermass, after all. So he might have thought from the start that another actor could take over the role in later years.

@bluesqueakpip – you beat me to it! I was just about to mention Robin of Sherwood (Michael Praed replaced by Jason Connery).
Sherlock Holmes with Jeremy Brett as Holmes (sorry Cumberbatch fans, JB was the best) had Watson played by David Burke who was replaced by Edward Hardwicke after DB joined the RSC.
And then there’s Corrie’s ‘Tracy Barlow’. Kate Ford is the 4th actress to play the role!

Pat Higgins on Doctor Who’s 50th Anniversary Show Should Ignore the Fans
28 September 2013 at 12:29 #17625@shazzbot
Is it “worthy” to point out that Hartnell was the only Doctor to have someone (the rather more high profile Peter Cushing) playing another interpretation of his character in films at the time? He may simply have felt that the concept was strong enough to carry on in whatever form, and he had first hand experience that no-one is irreplaceable.
28 September 2013 at 13:04 #17626@phaseshift – quite right, of course. I’d forgotten that the Dalek films were made when Hartnell was still in the role.
28 September 2013 at 13:15 #17627Okay, gang, @phaseshift‘s idea that the BBC might use Atlantis to kick-start the build up to the Who 50th was spot on.
The trailer is apparently still in post production, but there will be ‘stings’.
28 September 2013 at 13:24 #17628No trailer, but someone has cloned the musician Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner…..

Have I Got News for You Doctor Who Trailer Sketch
28 September 2013 at 14:22 #17632Anonymous @
Yep, looks like ‘stings’ before and after Atlantis. Makes sense, I suppose. Nice way to get more people tuning into Atlantis and an insurance policy that its not a ratings disaster right from the off. Personally, I was going to watch anyway and not sure that the promise of 5sec teasers each side of the show would have really been an added impetus.
Trailer in post sounds suspiciously like they were starting to get the general message of disgruntlement and have quickly cobbled one together…
