@wolfweed – my visual name-sake sounds a bit sad in that snippet.
I have white hair now, but a lot of it, and I’m still very glamorous and so I won’t disappoint, I hope! I’ll still be wearing the tight leather trousers and high-heel boots, regardless of what age!
I want to snark but at the same time, good on her. Seventy-four and wearing high-heel boots and tight leather trousers.
If you put a much older woman in Doctor Who, they can identify with it. I think it’s quite an interesting concept and if you remember things like Grimm’s Fairytales, the older woman is often the villainess, often the terrifying figure – why I do not know, but often she is. I think it’s an idea to be exploited
Yeah, that’s a bit depressing. ‘Older women’ are to be scared of. She’s not wrong in that assessment, which is why Helen Mirren as the Doctor would have been an amazing, ground-breaking casting choice.
4 October 2013 at 15:00 #17838@wolfweed @Shazzbot
Re Kate O’Mara – I was with her up till this point – “That’s what the fans are expecting, so that’s what you’ve got to give them”
Sorry, Kate, that’s exactly the reason to give them something different! And I agree with Shazz re casting older women in the “witch” role too often.
Wasn’t a huge fan of Kate O’Mara, which might be down to the direction as much as anything – tho she did do a great Mel impersonation 😈
4 October 2013 at 23:11 #17850After the announcement that plans to show the 50th special in cinemas were confirmed in general, this might be of interest to anyone who is actively seeking to watch the spectacle surrounded by people you don’t know, with colds you’ll inevitably get, munching loudly on popcorn, and with annoying mobile phone ring tones (which sums up my last experience of cinema, oh so many years ago).
It’s an article about a celebration day at Cineworld in Crawley, which features a guest appearance by Dorium (probably with body – 3D special effects aren’t that good).
Interesting though is this line:
On November 23 – 50 years to the day since the show was launched – Cineworld cinemas across the country are expected to be showing the BBC’s anniversary episode in 3D simulcast.
Apparently details to be finalised in the next couple of weeks. So check your Cineworld availability now. I have one in nearby Wakefield, but I will make do with my TV and other vital ingredients such as booze.
4 October 2013 at 23:23 #17851@phaseshift – fairly easy for those of us in London for the Celebration: central Cineworlds are in Shaftesbury Avenue and Haymarket, the one nearest the Excel Centre is West India Quay in Canary Wharf.
4 October 2013 at 23:47 #17852I should have guessed Cineworld because they have a track record of showing niche stuff like the occasional Bollywood picture and BBC/C4 Films. If you are all in the mood, it might be worth keeping an eye on.
There was a rumour (for anyone in or near Bradford) that Pictureville, which is associated with the Media Museum was in negotiation for it as well. That would tie in with their “fan” anniversary celebration mentioned previously on this thread and this recently announced “Family half term” Doctor Who event.
5 October 2013 at 13:05 #178735 October 2013 at 13:21 #178755 October 2013 at 23:25 #179016 October 2013 at 11:27 #17908Anonymous @OH MY GOSH!
I was second-time lucky in the latest draw for Doctor Who Celebrations tickets.
I can purchase up to 4 tickets in the Ice Warrior category for Friday 22nd November.
Now, I can’t go myself, but I’m happy to buy tickets for anyone else here. BUT – they have to be bought by NOON TOMORROW (Monday 7th October). So be quick, and let me know if you want me to buy them.
@phaseshift @whisht @pedant – are you interested? @craig – can this be put on the Home Page so more people might see it?
6 October 2013 at 12:00 #17909@shazzbot
Many thanks for the generous offer, but unfortuantely (and with more than a little regret) I’ll have to decline. To arrange my weekend I had to agree to take on a pretty fixed appointment on Friday morning.
I hope others who are interested will see this though. An amazing opportunity.
6 October 2013 at 12:02 #17910Well now….
http://www.mirror.co.uk/tv/tv-news/106-doctor-who-episodes-uncovered-2343474
(I am sceptical)
6 October 2013 at 12:05 #17912Anonymous @@pedant – but do you want to go to the Excel on Friday 22nd?
6 October 2013 at 12:06 #17913Anonymous @@phaseshift – oh, darn. I got so worried by the wording in the email I received (which actually arrived last Thursday, but in a dormant account I never use so I didn’t see it until today) that I went ahead and scooped up all 4. The email implied that it wasn’t certain that tickets would actually be available unless one acted fast.
Hopefully there are other Forum members who want to go …
6 October 2013 at 12:13 #17915@Shazzbot – alas not in a position to make a commitment (financial or otherwise) for a variety of complex reasons, but thx v much for offer.
6 October 2013 at 12:21 #17916@pedant I’ve been following that story (without getting too excited).
From what I can tell there really have been some episodes discovered in Africa but the person who has found them is negotiating with the BBC (the BBC is currently denying this). So whether we see them or not depends on the money.
Which makes me sick.
Can I do my rant about commercialism again?
I don’t do this for money. I will never have advertising on this site. This has never been, and never will be, about money. I do it for the joy it brings me and the joy it brings others. This site is based on open source software built by people who didn’t do it for money but for the love of it. For the joy of solving problems. For the joy it would give to others. The contributions here are not done for profit but for the joy of sharing.
Shame on anybody who holds the BBC to ransom over found episodes.
6 October 2013 at 13:05 #17919@shazzbot
Ah…If you have the tickets, and get no takers here, there are other forums which we can direct you to.
6 October 2013 at 13:18 #17920Yeah – it’s the same story we discussed on an earlier Sofa. I tend to disbelieve it because it’s just too good to be true – Anniversary year, all the missing episodes returned, etc.
The earlier rumours just said “Aftica” and this names Ethiopia. Ethiopean TV channel ETS did have access to early Hartnell (up to the Chase, If I remember from the book Wiped! (link to Amazon)) but no Troughton, so I doubt that detail even more.
Apparently this Stuart Kelly “announced” this at the Wigtown Book Festival so I can’t help thinking a bit of self promotion is probably a motivating factor in that one.
6 October 2013 at 15:04 #17925Anonymous @@phaseshift (and @ everyone) –
I thought it prudent (yes, I panicked 🙂 ) to get the maximum 4 tickets because surely there will be people disappointed by not getting tickets. We’re still a ways out, so I’d like to see if anyone on our own lovely Forum can benefit.
However, if it gets closer to November and there are any remaining tickets, I’ll take you up on your offer to direct me to other forums.
I’m even contemplating getting a dog-sitter for the day and attending myself …
6 October 2013 at 15:23 #17927@Shazzbot – get a dogsitter!! 😀
And yes the missing episodes again, as discussed On the Sofa a while back. And the Mirror isn’t exactly the epitome of lets-get-all-the-facts-verified-before-we-publish journalism! More of the “Mention Dr Who and watch the clicks rack up” school. I’ll believe it when I see them (but completely agree with @craig‘s thoughts re commercialism; there’s enough money being made out of DW by the BBC and many many others. This site is all the better for not being one of them)
6 October 2013 at 15:30 #17928Anonymous @Hiya @scaryb – you and @bluesqueakpip are both Weeping Angels, so even if I did go, we’d be on different ‘streams’ that day (I was only offered Ice Warrior). I’ll think about it some more, and research dog-sitters. The latter is most important, and really decides the issue.
6 October 2013 at 17:27 #17933Anonymous @@craig – to expand on your (very worthy, btw) rant about ‘commercialism’, can I add this despicable note about ‘capitalism’?
Tory MP Liam Fox claims 3p on expenses for 100-metre car journey
The former defence secretary Liam Fox successfully claimed 3p of taxpayers’ cash for a car journey of fewer than 100 metres, expenses documents show.
The Conservative MP made the claim after travelling 0.06 miles, or approximately 96.5 metres, within his North Somerset constituency from a concrete firm to a constituency surgery in Yatton in October 2012. The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (Ipsa) notes the claim was paid last December.
Fox also had another 15 claims of under £1 for car travel approved in 2012-13.
I have to stop reading the news about politicians. I’m physically ill. By their ‘morals’ I should be claiming tax relief for the flour, sugar and eggs I use to bake cakes for the tea breaks of our am-dram playhouse set-crew-building days?
7 October 2013 at 00:42 #179357 October 2013 at 02:49 #17937Sorry @pedant, but I can’t resist..It did seem that the BBC were holding something back when they announced the anniversary specails. Maybe this was the big secret. I would hope they will screen these episodes and not simply use them to sqeeze more money out of fans. I was surprised to read that they were never even repeated in the U.K. It seems that we in Australia were always better served in terms of repeats. I don’t know about those early stories but the Pertwee & Baker stories were repeated over and over and still are being reshown.
@Shazzbot I do so wish I could just pop over to the U.K. for the anniversary. Sometimes the “tyranny of distance” can be a real downer. I hope you are able to sell them.
@craig. Well said and thanks again for providing this wonderful site.
Cheers
Janette
7 October 2013 at 08:53 #17939Troughton ones???!! 😆 Oh my giddy aunt! (Doesn’t say which or how many, or if complete stories or…)
(I know comment not necessary but, but… 😉 )
@janetteb Keep checking in here and we’ll be together in spirit – and you can chuckle in the warm breezes of Sydney as we shiver in UK November 😉
*goes off to lie down for a bit 🙂 *
7 October 2013 at 12:22 #179487 October 2013 at 18:59 #17960More details on the missing episodes – the stories of 100 are ‘wide of the mark’, but the BBC is holding a press conference on Thursday.
A press conference sounds like it’s more than a couple of episodes.
😎
7 October 2013 at 21:25 #17962@bluesqueakpip It does sound hopeful.
I thought the end of that article interesting (although I’m trying desperately not to have ARSE)
The BBC is also marking the anniversary with a BBC2 lecture by professor Brian Cox on the science behind the show and An Adventure in Space and Time, a drama by Mark Gatiss about the show’s inaugural episode.
I just thought… yeah… that’s all they’re doing really. Not much more.
7 October 2013 at 21:50 #179658 October 2013 at 15:42 #17979Well it’s now officially official that something has been found..
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-24448063
I can now put away my disbelief of the story, and await what been found with a profound sense off anticippointment! 🙂
8 October 2013 at 15:54 #17983re the rumours of some missing episodes being found – even the BBC aren’t confirming – just to say that they expect an announcement!
(But I’m getting slightly excited! Anticippointment – haha – exactly)
BBC also announce that they’re upgrading iplayer and making the whole BBC experience more personal. Excuse me for harrumphing, I’d be happy if it works the way it’s supposed to now! (Lost the Name of the Dr after 4 days, when it was supposed to be there for a month 😥 , half the programmes I want to watch from last weekend aren’t even on it yet )
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-24442265
Is it just me or is the whole tone a bit patronising? Nice to see DW in the clips of things that people might want to watch on catch-up tho) And are they seriously going to base commission decisions on online audience feedback?! (great idea in theory but potential trolls paradise methinks)

A further update on the press conference regarding the ‘lost’ episodes:
http://www.doctorwhotv.co.uk/lost-doctor-who-classics-found-53619.htm
UPDATE 7: From Deborahwatling.net
Deborah [Victoria Waterfield], along with Frazer Hines [Jamie McCrimmon], will be helping the BBC to launch the newly found Dr.Who episodes this Thurs (10/10/13), between 3.30pm and 7.00pm approx.
So, definitely Troughton episodes …
9 October 2013 at 11:52 #18049@Shazzbot
If Deborah and Frazer are involved it suggests some VERY good Troughton indeed 😀 (I daren’t even begin to think about which!)
<ScaryB finding it very hard to concentrate this week! Inner 12 yo is jumping up and down in the corner>
Hope @htpbdet is improving enough to be getting this news. He’s going to be in a worse state than me at the moment, but I can’t think of anything better to speed his recovery.
I’m very confused about why they’ve chosen this week to launch though. Can’t imagine it’s anything to do with leaks, as this particular story’s been leaking for at least a year, and they can’t have “just found them” or “just secured them” if they’re planning to release some for sale this week. And how come they had to postpone the press launch? Seems a bit odd to me.@Bluesqueakpip – as our resident dates expert – anything significant in this week?
Small note of ARSE – this could make the BBC a small fortune. At what point of purchasing DW merch are you considered to be part-owner of the show??? I’m more than happy to buy them, but screening them on national TV would be a nicer birthday pressie – especially since it was the BBC’s lack of care for the show that caused the problem. Maybe they’ll do both.
Oh my giddy aunt, hehe

9 October 2013 at 21:58 #18081anything significant in this week?
@scaryb – they can’t possibly have found the legendary Episode 4 of The Tenth Planet, could they? They’d have Anneke Wills doing the press conference if it were that, surely?
But this week in October is when the First Doctor became the Second Doctor – not broadcast; it’s the week they filmed the first regeneration. The other Troughton serial which is both missing and broadcast in October is The Abominable Snowmen (which would be incredible serendipity, considering we’ve just seen the GI).
9 October 2013 at 23:41 #18085Anneke Wills (@AnnekeWills) tweeted this evening that she’s in central London for a “secret screening”
Frazer Hines (@WhoFrazer) says he’s “oh so pleased and happy” (in response to how he feels about “lost” episodes being found, but not being drawn on numbers or names!)
9 Oct 65 was Mission to the Unknown, followed by Myth Makers
8 – 29 Oct 66 – Tenth Planet
Oct 67, as you point out was the first Yeti adventure
I’ve tried birth dates, death dates… just can’t fathom why they’re chosing NOW to announce. (Not important but I’m intrigued as they’ve presumably had them for a while). Ian Levine’s being almost the soul of discretion, LOL. There’s a definite buzz about it being more than a few, but I’m trying not to think about it. Much 😉
*and breathe!*
Incidentally, just noticed this on the BFI site for November – but it’s sold out already 🙁 (Finger on the pulse, me!)
9 October 2013 at 23:47 #18086@scaryb – I think you are probably over-thinking.
For one thing, the Mirror blew the gaff but it is, I suspect, nothing more than a combination of how long it took to negotiate and BBC marketing peeps wanting to strike hard, strike sure.
9 October 2013 at 23:51 #180879 October 2013 at 23:59 #18090@pedant – I know we’ve been redecorating, but our mission statement is still there…
10 October 2013 at 00:15 #18092Haha!
10 October 2013 at 08:15 #18096Anonymous @Further to my comment 18037 yesterday, here’s a further update on the press conference re the Troughton episodes to be available for sale on iTunes.
(If they think they are ‘ratcheting up the anticipatory tension’, I think they’re wrong. Building frustration levels whilst at the same time deflating excitement levels is more like it. The announcement was supposed to be Weds, then Thurs, now effectively Friday?)
http://www.doctorwhotv.co.uk/lost-doctor-who-classics-found-53619.htm
UPDATE 8: The Telegraph states that details from the conference are embargoed until “a few hours” after (other sources claim it will be a midnight announcement, so technically Friday):
We won’t be able to tweet from the #missingepisodes Doctor Who conference. News will come on Friday.
Asked if the outcome of the press conference is embargoed, they replied:
Yes but only for a few hours.
10 October 2013 at 09:50 #18098@Shazzbot – it is reaching ‘I can feel my ARSE growing’ levels, isn’t it?
@pedant – can you remember if they held a full scale press conference when they recovered the final missing episode from Tomb? Because whatever they’ve found, it does feel like at least one of the episodes completes a story. Or even that they’ve found a complete story.
10 October 2013 at 09:51 #18099Thanks @Shazzbot for the update. Press call is 3.30-7pm apparently – that’s long time – suggests screening (a lot?) more than 1 episode.
Frazer Hines’ twitter this morning –
In answer to all your Qs…I would love all of Pats to be found as they were such good stories. The one today is The..ugh….just been shot!
So he’s obviously enjoying himself, LOL
Read into that whatever you like 🙂 (ANY recovered Dr and Jamie stories works for me)
@bluesqueakpip – I don’t remember far enough back but it does suggest a find of significance (either quality or quantity. Both…?!)
10 October 2013 at 10:09 #18101@bluesqueakpip – no, but no lost episodes have been found in the 50th anniversary year before.
They moved it to Friday so that they get both the dailies and the weekend papers.
A three hour (allowing 30 mins for assembly) press conference/ screening in non-trivial.
10 October 2013 at 10:18 #18102Final twitter digest for now – Ian Levine has promised to eat a pair of Phil Morris (current episode finder)’s socks if he’s found over 100 epis, and Chris Chapman (DW doc director) has promised to eat a pair of Ian’s. So I’m guessing it’s less than 100!
For people interested in this sort of thing – inc @fatmaninabox @thommck
This is @danmartinuk ‘s recommended people to follow on Twitter http://www.buzzfeed.com/danmartin/35-people-every-doctor-who-fan-should-follow-on-twitter
He’s missed out Frazer above who’s quite fun and AnnekeWills (occasional) – and no doubt several others which the end commentators will put right 😉
10 October 2013 at 10:27 #18103@pedant – it makes sense that they’d want to get both the Friday morning papers – a lot of the daily commuter freesheets don’t print on Saturdays – and the weekend papers. And the delay is almost certainly because Marketing is trying to get everything into that golden eight week period before The Day of The Doctor.
It’s just that ‘oh, yeah, we’ve found Episode 3 of the Macra Terror and Episode 5 of The Enemy of the World’ doesn’t sound like something that would rate a full press conference. A press release, yes. But even in the 50th Anniversary year, it’s still only of interest to TV & Film historians and BG Doctor Who fans.
The announcement that episodes had been found didn’t make the top Entertainment story on the BBC’s news site, for example.
Still, we’ll know tomorrow. 😉
10 October 2013 at 10:52 #18104Am still a bit puzzled about why they would announce there would be an announcement for itunes release on Weds, then postpone to the end of the week. The story’s broken at least twice before, and the Beeb just deny it, so hard to believe the Mirror story’s what triggered it. Why not just go for the end of the week in the first place? Unless of course itunes were doing their usual faffing about and they weren’t ready for downloading by Wed.
The story’s made ripples internationally tho, inc the New York Post – http://nypost.com/2013/10/07/lost-doctor-who-episodes-unearthed/
(VERY perceptively they say “It’s believed the “lost episodes” star the first two doctors, William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton” Ha! Well, yes, surprise us. Maybe they’ve found a previously unknown missing Colin Baker SEASON 😈 )
3 hrs plus is time to show 4/5 episodes (eek!), plus assembling and talk…!
10 October 2013 at 11:12 #18109@scaryb – Thanks. I’m now aging quickly at the thought that there may be more Colin Baker episodes than we’ve already suffered. What if an extra season of Colin Baker was actually filmed while the show was on hiatus, and they’re gonna inflict that on us now, with the reveal that Docs 7-11 were all a closed timeline and PC will actually turn out to be Doctor 7. Argh.
10 October 2013 at 12:34 #18112I’m guessing Tenth Planet 4 is unlikely as the DVD – complete with all-new animated 4th epi is out next Mon – would look a bit eggy if the animated episode is suddenly out of date. Unless it’s a double bluff of course!
http://www.doctorwho.tv/whats-new/article/dvd-preview-the-tenth-planet
10 October 2013 at 12:51 #18113@scaryb – I’m guessing it’s either a lot of episodes, a complete story, or episodes which make stories complete. To me, a full scale press conference implies something whose importance can be understood by the average BBC viewer – not just the hard core fans. In that sense, Tenth Planet 4 is up there with the BBC’s studio coverage of the Moon Landings – everyone would understand why it’s important that they’ve found it.
Realistically, they’d love it back, but they haven’t much hope. It’s so very well known that they want it, badly, that the only remaining chance is someone who doesn’t know what’s on that old film stock. Or, alternatively, one of those strange people who want to be the only person anywhere who has this.
