And I imagine that writing for the TV series puts a lot more constraints on your creativity, anyway. Budget is more of a factor and you have to please a lot more people.

What I like about individual stories is the variety it affords.
Whether it’s less or more, that entirely depends on how good the individual stories are. A good short story is sometimes better than a convoluted novel. More and bigger plot doesn’t always a better story make. :-]
This two-parter looks like something that will probably get a lot better upon repeated viewing, so I might (and probably will) change my opinion yet. Not likely I’ll ever be tempted to call it the best Who ever (or even my favourite TV episode), though.
As with the first episode – I liked it, but didn’t love it.
Maybe I’ll change my opinion after I watch both Apprentice and Familiar again, for now I find them worse than the sum of their parts… I loved bits and pieces (Colony Sarff, Weeping Song in the background, friendly banter with Davros, Missy – and more…), but I’m not quite as smitten as I’d like to be.
Curious (and somewhat worried) as to where Moff is going with that prophecy thing.
I find the notion of sonic sunshades very…MTV (but that is my problem with Moffat’s era in general). I guess the screwdriver is probably gonna come back at some point and even if it didn’t I probably wouldn’t mind that much (iconic it may be but these things come and go) – but this was…kinda ridiculous, really.
(Just a minor nitpick, though.)
Absolutely loving Capaldi.
Still not a fan of Clara. (Though that bit with her trapped inside of a Dalek WAS brilliant. Chilling indeed. I always appreciate these trips ‘into the dalek’…)
Very much looking forward to the next week’s episode, the teaser looked quite promising.

I like old music traditions, both folk and elite ones – and I really enjoy it when they fuse with rock (and metal). I’m especially drawn towards Inner and East Asian, Celtic, and Slavic music.
You might have heard about Yat-Kha – a Tuvan band that mixes Tuvan traditional instruments and khoomei with rock, metal, punk, funky, jazz – or whatever tickles Albert Kuvezin’s chakras the most at the moment…
One more recommendation… Dawanggang, Chinese folk fusion band. Formed by a former punker after he’d spent several years travelling around China, learning stuff, getting inspiration & growing wiser.
As far as China’s concerned, the underground scene there has always been quite strongly connected to the folk and traditional music. PRC only has about 30 years worth of rock/metal, it only began in mid/late-80s there, with guys/bands like Cui Jian and Hei Bao… I might be remembering it wrong but I think that the roots of it all, kind of a “proto-rock” from which the Chinese rock and metal scene has grown, was the ‘northwest wind’ wave – which was very deeply rooted in the folk music of the regions along middle reaches of the Yellow River (mainly Shaanxi, I think…. makes sense; I mean, the Shaanxi variety of Chinese opera is basically metal)…
When I do DW fanart, it’s almost always audio plays. (Gotta admit ever since SM took over, a lot of my enthusiasm for the TV show has gone… I’ve turned into one of those annoying ‘BF-already-dunit-&-dunit-better-too’ people…:-))
@tommo I enjoyed browsing through your DA gallery, the pencil sketches look really cool. Your style’s got a bit of roughness to it, I like that.
(Some pretty cool music happens in Mainland China. And still I get those dumb, blank stares and “Such a thing exists?” when I say I listen to Chinese rock.)

@yacotaco It might work if you get these people to contribute either individually or preferably in smaller groups. Then edit the recorded material into a video. (I guess that’s what you have in mind?)
Get the word out and convention going fans might help you get the footage. And who knows, if you ask nicely, maybe even actors who participate in the fandom stuff less often and less enthusiastically – or hardly at all – could be persuaded to contribute their bit.
Maybe set up a page, post link on forums and various pages on all kinds of social media…?
Not exactly new stuff – but I’ve recently started to watch Ripper Street and I’m really really enjoying it. Great atmosphere, good writing, superb cast… I’m a sucker for anything Victorian and this is right up my alley.
If you got into DW via the renewed series, New Eighth Doctor Adventures are a good place to start. They resemble the nuWho format (60 min. episodes telling more or less standalone stories, with loose season story arcs) and they provide the context and background for Dark Eyes.
Dark Eyes series itself might be a good starting point but I guess that listening to NEDA with 8th and Lucie Miller first would be better.
Or – especially if you are a classic Who fan – you could just take it from the very beginning and start with Storm Warning. The format is more like the Classic Who TV series.
Those main range stories are pretty awesome (and a lot of them have pretty strong steampunk vibes to them I feel) and Charley Pollard is an absolutely adorable companion.
Those are the three starting points I’d consider.
(I myself started with NEDA and then came back to the older stories. Worked for me.)
But I guess you might have started already, anyway. 🙂
Gotta say I’m still struggling to warm up to Smith. Most of his episodes are still ahead of me and he doesn’t really irritate me anymore, so I’ll probably end up liking him. He’s the Doctor, after all…:-)
But for the time being, I still find the 9th and the 10th more enjoyable and watching The Day of The Doctor only reminded me of how much I miss Eccleston (by his rather marked absence) and Tennant (by his all too brief presence). I’d definitely follow those guys into that blue box. Not sure about Matt yet.
Oddly enough I find myself really looking forward to Capaldi.
Not familiar with the classical series yet, I’m fairly new to Doctor Who. Planning to catch up on that as soon as school and work allow and looking forward…:-)
