    Thanks @pedant Spammed again. @blenkinsopthebrave Loved Barcelona, hate these Romance Scams.

    @mersey Thanks for the advice but I was actually just going to bed. Had free tickets to teh hotel’s club so it would have been a shame not to use them. 🙂

    @stitchintime They are real people unfortunately. If they were computer bots there would be a way…[Read more]

    @mersey — I doubt it. It’s without a doubt the most shameful moment in British journalism. Even that front page doesn’t seem particularly contrite, if you ask me…

    @Mersey — yes, it’s been a long time coming. Too long.

    Yeah I know what you mean and I too felt that there was something about her which just seemed likeable and ordinary (if anyone can be ordinary!)

    @bluesqueakpip

    That’s good to hear!

    @craig

    I too watched some football to see this! The things we do for Doctor Who!

    @mersey

    I’m not so keen on the regular modern day companion as it has been done so often but I don’t mind of course! Early signs are that she’s going to be very different to Clara and maybe not to far from Donna Noble? Sounds good to me anyway! Can’t wait now for…[Read more]

    Thanks @mersey have spammed them. I got the same. As usual, to everyone else, do not reply to the lovely lady in the United Nations Army. Is she in UNIT? More likely some prince who also has $1 billion he needs to deposit in your bank account.

    I disagree, to me PC is the complete opposite.

    However, you are perfectly entitled to you point of view.

  • Miapatrick replied to the topic The Witch’s Familiar

    @Mersey– that’s interesting. The episode started with the message that Davros ‘remembers’.  I wonder if that simply means for most of his life he had forgotten, which is why he would risk fighting the Doctor, and why he would remember at that point?

    I quite like the idea (I don’t want it to happen to myself) of a species who, at the point of…[Read more]

    I cannot remember Adric, so I can’t comment. However, in my opinion Claar was damned good, as were Rose and Donna.

    Martha, Rory and Amy were all right – Amy better than Martha at least.

    River Song wins the gold though, even though she wasn’t strictly speaking, a companion.

    Cheers,

    @mersey      I have also wondered about poor old Brian. He was a favourite of mine and I hope he knew about River at least. What about Amy’s Mum and Dad ? She just got them back.I guess Clara can stop in at any time to see her Dad and maybe even her Mum.

    If the companions have a family then we will always be left with those  questions about wh…[Read more]

    No, of course not, Mersey.

    It just seems that some of my opinions don’t match with the orthodoxy of other forum members.

    And to be fair some of them seem to take that very personally while I’ve just been trying to defend my conclusions.

    One of the big brouhahas was because I mentioned what I thought was “a minor technical point”.

  • @puroandson

    I have an issue with Clara’s confidence -my issue. And yet I do not with River -is it an age thing? I don’t think so. Is it an actress issue? Did Clara simply underperform? No I don’t think so.

    @Mersey      Well, there is that.  🙂  Fortunately, we are clever enough to come up with in-story rationales for all these pragmatic decisions!

    @puroandson    I didn’t take your words as meaning you didn’t like her. I have said it before, during series 8, that there were times when I found her behaviour and attitude quite seriously annoying.…[Read more]

    I still think people (and the Doctor, for that matter) underestimate the power that certain kinds of “knowledge” have over our perceptions. River “knew” with absolute certainty (as far as she was concerned) that SmithDoc was on his last regen. This single “fact” was powerful enough that it would have allowed her…[Read more]

    I don’t know if 10 said something like that, but 9 definitely did. At the end of Dalek.

    DOCTOR: I’m the only one left. I win. How about that?
    ROSE: The Dalek survived. Maybe some of your people did too.
    DOCTOR: I’d know. In here. (his head) Feels like there’s no one.

    For me, part of the difference was in the fact that River (by the time we were getting to know her) had to some degree earned the right to a little arrogance. She is closer to being the Doctor’s equal. She has lived a long life, travelled in time…[Read more]

    I think it has reached the stage where it would be an error to do a @JimTheFish story. He works much better as a sort of Elizabeth Mainwaring-like off-screen presence (colonials will have to look up Dad’s Army to get that (not the new movie, which may well have made catastrophic blunder wrt to Mrs Mainwaring).

    Yes, I think I agree with you. I felt that when River realized the Doctor was in fact the Doctor, the tone changed. And it was that later part of the story that I really liked. I think your comparison with Mels is a good one. And that was part of my hesitation in embracing the pantomime diamond heist part of the story. Whereas by the end…[Read more]
