    We will all remember where we were when DavisonGate broke… (Fake News! Sad!)

    I would hesitate from beating up a 78 year-old past presenter of Blue Peter on the street

    (Other 78 year olds are fair game)

    @nick — the Tom Baker “story” is a typical Mirror/Sun “twist the facts to suit the headline” tactic. In fact, he said that a woman Doctor Who might be quite fun, but that if the ratings collapsed the BBC could always have her regenerate early to restore the show’s ratings. All perfectly true. But the Mirror/Sun tactic is to hide that behind a…[Read more]

    @Nick — Baker said that if JW wasn’t any good she could be replaced, which is hardly earth-shattering and doesn’t live up the spin the Star is putting on it. (Fake News! Sad!)

    Purves said he would be ‘horrified’ by a female Doctor. But this was before the JW announcement. I wonder if anyone’s gone back to him since. And I’d imagine since…[Read more]

    @Nick—

    AG Who with Rose, Martha, River (and Amy/Clara to an extent) has broadened the relationship to include sexuality as describe. I think you can argue whether this change was necessary or not, I think that […]

    @wolfweed — I saw Davison has quit Twitter and it is a real shame because his original comments have been totally misrepresented. He was very encouraging about JW and did little more than ‘wonder’ about the removal of a male role model. Personally I think he’s worrying unnecessarily for reasons gone into in detail elsewhere but that doesn’t mean…[Read more]

    Odd, it chewed up my response again once I edited it.

    @nick  I wouldn’t want it thought that I’m against the casting because I’m absolutely not.  I’m looking forward to what a new actor brings to the role, I just hope she’s allowed to be an actor first and a woman second.  I’m aware that the subtext will always be there, I acknowledge the po…[Read more]

    Chibnall saying that he wanted his period as Head Writer to include a female Doctor is no less reasonable than Moffat wanting to play with the philosophical implications of time travel. […]

    @Nick—

     To include a standard comedy character such as a goofy bumbling bloke could never work for me. It would be as sexist as having a female companion portraying a standard petite teenage blond

    I agree and […]

    Thanks @nick.  I think my answer to several of these points would be, yes, let’s see how they approach it.  I’ve seen JW in a few things but have no idea really how she will play the Doctor, and how it will be […]

    @nick Glad you liked the short. The feature is better as it has time for a bit more depth and width. Jodie Whittaker is great in it though, isn’t she? I’ve started watching more things that she’s been in and I just think she’s going to be amazing.

    @Conchobarre and @mirime  – You sound as if you have both done a great job explaining the change from male-presenting to female-presenting Doctor to your young sons. I look forward to hearing their reactions to the new 13th Doctor in action.

    You do make a lot of valid points about the origins of a lot of things dating back to a time when women didn’t have lead roles. Perhaps I can condense this as well. In this day and age there are enough roles in Hollywood that gender flipping isn’t needed. As to a list of roles that could easily flip, pick a Disney movie pretty much. Frozen…[Read more]

    @nick and @cloisterbell —

    It’s true that we won’t really know until Xmas at the earliest what JW will be like as the Doctor one way or the other. PC’s Doctor, for example, was not quite what I was expecting but he still surpassed my expectations. I was dreading Matt Smith and he knocked it out the park in his first 20 minutes.

    But as to JW…[Read more]

    @craig— That’s a lovely little short too, isn’t it? I definitely prefer the full feature though and I’m really impressed that they managed to extend it without it feeling like a smallish idea that’s just been padded out. JW aside, I’m just surprised that I hadn’t heard of it before because it really gladdens my heart to see there is still a…[Read more]

    …maybe the transition (in universe/story and in reality) will be easier to accept if he CHOOSES to regenerate into a woman (perhaps in an attempt to honor missy’s and bill’s sacrifices)?

    Peter Capaldi’s salary is correct because (unlike Graham Norton) he is not employed by an outside production company.

    I agree that there is no context without other channels’ figures (or indeed outside production figures).

    It’s all a bit pointless but hey-ho… (Have people seen what £$ sportspeople get, FFS?)

    I believe this will effect Jodie Whittaker’s career negatively , because most every actor who has played the Doctor has spent their career being Doctor Who # whatever. She will also have to deal an entire season scripts constantly pointing out that the Doctor is now a woman and explaining any recurring characters why. Hopefully she’ll get a…[Read more]

    @thane15

    I can imagine little kids -girls and boys -playing Doctor Who and not caring if the girl is the Doctor.
